♦ The lock carrier is a safety-relevant component. For this reason, the lock carrier must only be repaired at
the points indicated.
♦ In the event of damage, renew lock carrier.
♦ For vehicles with adaptive cruise control unit -J428-, the adaptive cruise control unit -J428- must be
adjusted anew whenever the lock carrier has been removed, installed or replaced.

♦ Always fit lock carrier on the bolting points at the foremost position in the elongated hole. Only then can
the lock carrier move in a crash situation.
♦ On vehicles equipped with adaptive cruise control unit -J428-, the adaptive cruise control unit -J428- must
be readjusted whenever the lock carrier has been removed, installed or renewed.
♦ On vehicles ► 06/2019, observe instructions and work specifications for adaptive cruise control unit

– Removing plenum chamber cover ⇒ page 15 .
– Unscrew hexagon nuts -2- and remove plenum chamber
bulkhead -1-.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal observing the following:

The procedures for removing and installing the plenum chamber covers may have to be modified slightly
depending on model variants.

Note
♦ An insert is fitted in windscreen seal of new windscreens. Remove this insert before installing plenum
chamber cover.
♦ Push the plenum chamber cover into the windscreen seal by hand using only slight force. Never force it in
by hitting or using tools.
♦ Striking or banging the plenum chamber cover into the windscreen seal may crack the windscreen.

Removing
– Remove spray jets -5- ⇒ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 92; Win‐
dow washer system; Removing and installing spray jets.
– Pull line -2- out of opening in bonnet -1-.
– Loosen hexagon nuts -3- in left and right hinges -4- (do not
remove).
Further dismantling requires the assistance of a second me‐
chanic.
– Remove gas strut -6-.
– Now, and only now, unscrew and remove hexagon nuts -3-
and lift bonnet -1- out of hinges -4-.

The brackets are installed after the bumper cover has been painted.
Note
Do not permit the punch -4- to turn on the paint of the bumper cover.
Alignment of brackets
– Brackets -1- must be aligned in such a way that sensor
connections -arrows- point to centre of vehicle.
Do not carry out any further work on the bumper cover or brack‐
ets until the minimum curing period of 2 hours has expired.
The minimum curing period must be observed so that the adhe‐
sive tape can develop its full adhesive strength.
In this time, the bumper cover must remain where it is. Do not
move it.
Installing brackets
Note
The brackets are installed after the bumper cover has been
painted.
The markings for the bracket -1- can be found on the inside of
the bumper cover.
– If there are no markings, the centre point -2- must be deter‐
mined.
– The holes must be drilled from the inside to the outside with
the drill in the tool kit -3-.
– Set hole puncher in position with bolt head -1-, washer -2-
and thrust bearing -3- from inside bumper cover -5-.
– Screw on punch -4-, not quite as far as bumper cover.
– Press punch -4- against bumper cover.
– Tighten hole puncher -1-.
Note
Do not permit the punch -4- to turn on the paint of the bumper cover.
In this time, the bumper cover must remain where it is. Do not
move it.

The brackets are installed after the bumper cover has been painted.
– Fit screw-hole punch -VAS 6614/9- with bolt head -1-, wash‐
er -2- and counter-support -3- from inside of bumper cover
-5-.
– Screw on punch -4-, not quite as far as bumper cover.
– Press punch -4- against bumper cover.
– Tighten screw-hole punch -1-.
Note
Do not permit the punch -4- to turn on the paint of the bumper cover.
Alignment of brackets
– Brackets -1- must be aligned in such a way that exterior
sensor connections -arrows- point to centre of vehicle.
– Connections of interior sensors -arrows- point outwards.
Note
♦ The centring pin has a diameter of 18.2 mm, the hole has a diameter of 18.4 mm.
♦ Nevertheless, the centring pin is suitable for centring the support.
Do not carry out any further work on the bumper cover or brack‐
ets until the minimum curing period of 2 hours has expired.
The minimum curing period must be observed so that the adhe‐
sive tape can develop its full adhesive strength.
In this time, the bumper cover must remain where it is. Do not
move it.
Installing brackets
Note
The brackets are installed after the bumper cover has been
painted.
The markings for the bracket -1- can be found on the inside of
the bumper cover.
– If there are no markings, the centre point -2- must be deter‐
mined.
– The holes must be drilled from the inside to the outside with
the drill in the tool kit -3-.
– Set hole puncher in position with bolt head -1-, washer -2-
and thrust bearing -3- from inside bumper cover -5-.
– Screw on punch -4-, not quite as far as bumper cover.
– Press punch -4- against bumper cover.
– Tighten hole puncher -1-.
Note
Do not permit the punch -4- to turn on the paint of the bumper cover.
In this time, the bumper cover must remain where it is. Do not
move it.

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
Adhere to the installation instructions for bonded spoilers ⇒
page 398 .
– Clean bonding area of rear lid with cleaning solution.
– Allow cleaning solution to evaporate.
• (At least 5 minutes).
– Apply glass/paint primer evenly in one pass onto bonding
area of 1-component window adhesive using applicator.
– Observe drying time according to the safety data sheet.
• (At least 5 minutes).
– Using hand-cartridge gun -V.A.G 1628-, apply 1-component
window adhesive -2- in a bead of 3.5 mm in diameter on
inside of roof spoiler -1-.
– With the assistance of a second mechanic, fit roof spoiler -1-
in -direction of arrow- to rear lid.
Pull protective film off adhesive tape -3-, verify correct align‐
ment, and press on roof spoiler -1-.
– After brake light has been installed, fit roof spoiler trim -4-,
and engage it in roof spoiler -1-.
