Assignment 1 (Preliminaries) - due by Sept 23, 2020

1. Let (a, b) be an open interval of R. Find a one-one mapping from (0, 1) onto (a, b) and then
onto (0, ∞).

2. Show that the collection of all finite sets of N is countable.

3. Prove that A◦ and Ā are the largest open subset of A and the smallest closed set containing A,
respectively.

4. Let X be the interval (0, 1) in R with the usual distance |x − y|. Find a Cauchy sequence in X
that does not converge in X.

5. Prove that if E1 , E2 , ... are compact subsets of R then ∩∞j=1 E j is compact.
