Expert lecture on “Mass Transfer and Separation Processes”

5th August 2021

Chemical Engineering Department of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda

organized expert lecture on “Mass Transfer and Separation Processes” on Microsoft Teams coordinated by
Prof. Parin Shah The expert talk was delivered by Dr. Kiran D. Patil, Professor and Head, School of
Chemical, Petroleum and Polymer Engineering, Dr. Vishwanath Karad MIT World Peace University, Pune.
The online meeting was attended by 90 participants consisting of UG and PG students.

The lecture was divided in three parts, Indian Chemical Process Industry, Mass Transfer and Separation
Processes: Applications in Process Industries and Introduction to Reactive Distillation, respectively. In the
first part Dr Kiran mainly focused on Segmentation in Indian Chemical Industry and information regarding
annual turnover. The second part consisted of basic introduction to mass transfer operation, it’s
classification, nature, examples and industrial importance. Next Dr Kiran discussed about the conventional
Separation Processes, their industrial applications, importance, mechanism, types, examples and factors
influencing the selection of feasible separation operations. In the third part Dr Kiran told us about the
Reactive Distillation (RD), he also gave motivating an example for study of Methyl Acetate- Eastman
Kodak Process, some applications of RD were discussed and finally the presentation ended with discussing
about constraints and difficulties in RD implementation

Overall, the lecture was very interesting and beneficial to all the students. The session ended with a vote
of thanks by Prof. Femina Patel, Head of Department of Chemical Engineering.
