History: The Untold Relevance

1. What is the importance of studying the history of ADZU and Zamboanga?

Anything or anyone that we see all around us now is a history. Sometimes history
can be, just told, written, captured, investigated, evidences, witnesses, sources, it can
be just a story that was never recorded but one thing there is from history is that it
happened. History as a definition is the study of past events. There is history because
something happened in the past and studying history is important because it allows
us to understand something more from that past of which that makes the present.
We found answers in history and to be able to get this puzzle pieces together we look
for them, investigate, and we study them. History is what makes us now, our culture,
tradition, rules, values, and our world. History is a part where people can finally
understand why we are different, how did it happen and why did it happen. And, in
studying both the history of ADZU and Zamboanga is that we are part of this things,
we live in this things, and we’ve grown with them, maybe not in our ages but from
where we actually belong and connect. Zamboanga is a city, the place where I grew
up, but, a part of me growing up in this city is that I never delve into the past of this
place. Never knew where its name came from, never knew who were the political
mayors, how did it became a city to begin with. I realize that even though I was born
here, raised here, I was never introduced to it. It was like, I am a foreigner in this city
that even the chavacano language I could not speak it. It is shameful, in the idea that
what if some real foreign people came here and asked me where did Zamboanga’s
name came from or can you speak chavacano or something like that. From that, I
think studying and knowing something or someone’s history is very important,
because it is a knowledge and information that could help you grow and be a part of
fully, it can even help others to be also knowledgeable too and to avoid
misunderstandings about our history so they won’t be misled and that they won’t
judge too quickly regarding the traditions that we’ve grown in to. Also, studying
one’s history is also preserving the memories that was left. Memories means the
buildings, the people, those things that made who it is now. Just like, the Ateneo de
Zamboanga University, we know its history, we know it was called Escuela Catolica
before, who was the first president, when did it became a university, these things, the
dates and the names is a memory. This memory is a part of who is ADZU now.

2. Why is it important to discuss one’s history?

History includes the records of our past, such as the dates, names, and places.
The importance of discussing one’s history are:
1) Change; from being how it used to be to being different now. There is a saying
that ‘Change is constant’ and I think it pertains to history, something that happens
and changes that occurs continuously like the dates it changes yearly and we record
it as something that is now part of our past. Changes is what lead us to understand
how such a small thing can turn to something big, like being rags to riches, she was
poor before so it becomes her past and her present now is that she’s rich. So changes
it what makes history occur, so that people can understand and know that the
changes that happens in front of us can be a history now. We need to discuss history
for people to know that who we are now is because of these changes, what Andres
Bonifacio, Dr. Jose Rizal, and other Filipinos fought to give us freedom, the
revolution, the change they fought for us, from the Spanish and American rule to our
independence, that one changes they started gave us what they did not have before,
they also gave us the history of the Philippines.
2) Preservation; history consist also of stories, when we hear these stories we
preserve them, pass them down, retell it to the next generation. Why we need to
discuss history is for it not die, for it to live long. That even when all the first
generations died already the next generation can continue the cycle of what was told
to them. Tell it to people so they don’t forget it, tell it to people so they became aware
of it, and tell it to people so they realize it is a part of us. That it is important to hear
these stories so we understand it. So we need to keep history flowing like water, so it
does not change, so it goes on as long as they keep it going.
3)Learn; History is being taught at school, it is part of our school’s curriculum. So
history is something that we must be educated about just as equal to English. We
must discuss one’s history so that we do not repeat the same mistakes and to know
that we have learn something. Like, when we did not study for the exams and as a
result we almost failed so we learn from it and we do not repeat it.

3. How can I use these learnings as I move on to my college life?

I can utilize this information’s that I’ve learn to level up and move to college as a
reminder that whatever there
