Statement of purpose
Hospitality is one of the world’s fastest growing industries. As a citizen of India, I had first-
hand experience of witnessing the rapid growth in this sector. At a very young age, I had
made up my mind to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. One of the reasons behind
this is that my family operates a resort in Goa, which provides boarding and restaurant
services to clients. My family has been associated with the hospitality business for the past 6
years. Gaining international exposure will help me set long term goals for my organisation
and help me improvise resources efficiently.
After completing my schooling, I enrolled in the reputed Maharashtra State Institute of Hotel
Management and Catering Technology in Pune, where I pursue undergraduate studies in
Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT), a programme I completed with
distinction. I chose front office and housekeeping as my specialization. During my
specialization in housekeeping and front office I studied about operation and management of
each department and used that knowledge during collage events and competition that I
participated in.
Throughout my programme, I ranked among the top 5 at my collage. In my final year I did
research on “Comparative Study of Heritage Property in Housekeeping and Front Office
Operation”. I have organised theme lunches and dinners in collage and was also Event Head
for many collage events.
Apart from academics, I was extremely involved in my extracurricular activities as well. I
was the student council president for two years and head of the department for two years.
These roles helped me acquire leadership, communication and organizational skills, which
helped me, organize the annual food fest conducted at our college for four years successfully
and making the highest profit in my final year. I also participated in many inter-college
competitions and won prizes.
During my undergraduate studies, I did one month’s training in the kitchen of an Italian
cuisine restaurant called Little Italy. During my training in little Italy I was working in
kitchen where I acquired knowledge about Italian cuisine, menu planning and plate
presentation. I also underwent 6 months’ training in all departments at the Ramee Grand,
Pune. My 6 months training involved all departments like front office, housekeeping, food
and beverage service, and marketing. During my training I learned and handled guest
reservation, cash book, banquet booking and upselling of the room, cleaning of rooms,
service on call, tele-phone reservation, cleaning and maintain public areas. I also learned and
gained practical knowledge about different types of service like sliver service, buffet service
and room service during my training in Food and Beverage service; my training also helped
me to handle guest complains as well. Apart from this, during my vacations, I would handle
guest reservation, bill settlement and advertisements at our resort, which added to my
experience.
I believe that for any organisation, it is critically important to create a brand and infuse it with
meaning and value. For my own future, it is important to learn the skills and techniques that I
could apply, so I can eventually return and develop my family company into a successful
organisation with expanding horizons.
The hospitality and tourism management programme at Fanshawe College is an excellent
opportunity for me to fulfil my dreams and achieve both my personal goals and professional
aspirations.
My focus during studying at Fanshawe College Boulevard is to gain knowledge and expertise
that is offered by the institution. The golden opportunity that Canada offers will help me gain
international experience and exposure to the working environment and culture which will
help me grow.
After completing the programme, I hope to obtain practical work experience in Canada in
order to continue learning and improving my ability. I plan to return to my country and help
my family business to expand.
If I get a chance to study at Fanshawe, I hope to equip myself with great business acumen
while also learning international etiquette and acquiring understanding of international
customers. This will give me unique a advantage in future. I sincerely hope you consider me
deserving of this opportunity.
