Procedure for cleaning/flushing of steering gear system.

Frydenbø workshop.

1. All hydraulic components must be cleaned before assembling.


2. After assembly the rudder actuator to be filled with hydraulic oil and connected to a testing
pump.
3. All pump oil tank, storage tank, expansion tank to be treated in accordence with Quality
manual para. 7.19.12
4. Regarding testing see ”Factoring acceptance test” 99.45.01.
5. In case of replaceing the system by new oil/pipes the complete system shall be flushed
according to following procedure.

Shipyard installation:

Pipe cutting and cleaning:

1. Pipes must be cut by means of pipe cutting device or grinding disk.


Flame cutting is not recommended.
2. Pipe sections to be immersed in a acidbath, 15% hydrocloric acid, for a period of 2 – 24
hours depending of the pipe condition. After the acid bath the pipes must be washed with
fresh water and finally neutralized by immersion in weak alkaline bath. ( appr. 8,5 PH)
3. All pipe ends to be closed by plastic cups or tape in order to retain cleanliness prior to
assembly.

Flushing:

1. It is essential to attain a working temperature during flushing of 50º C -70º C, and run the
flushing pump until at least 10 times the system oil volum have passed.
2. Sensitive components such as control valves on pumps and actuator should be by-passed
by separate flushing pipes.
3. The flushing period shall be as long as necessary until a cleanliness level of 16/13 of ISO
4406 is attained, corresponding to NAS 1638 class 7 or SAE level 4.
4. Components removed or by-passed should be replaced after the required fluid cleanliness
level is attained.
