John Duke Six Poems by Emily Dickinson for Soprano Voice and Piano peermusic New York - Hamburg John Duke Six Poems by Emily Dickinson for Soprano Voice and Piano peermusic New York - Hamburg John Duke (1899-1984), composer, pianist and teacher, achieved a wide reputation as a composer of art songs. His first published songs appeared in 1923, and his catalogue of songs numbers more than two hundred. Mr. Duke was born in Cumberland, Maryland and received his early musical education at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Later he studied in New York with Franklin Cannon, a Leschetizky pupil, and in Europe with Artur Schnabel and Nadia Boulanger. He was Professor of Music at Smith College for many years, appearing regularly in solo piano recitals and chamber music programs. After retir- ing, he lived in Northampton, Massachusetts, and was active both as ‘composer and pianist. In addition to songs, his works include two one-act operas, two string quartets, a concerto for piano and strings, Carnival Overture for full or- chestra, and numerous works for other instrumental combinations.
