Introductory Message
Welcome to Science 7!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Cadiz City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to
the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Science Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if
you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read
and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

SCIENCE 7 ACTIVITY SHEET No. 3

Different Levels of Biological Organization

I. Learning Competency with Code

Describe the different levels of biological organization from cell to biosphere
(S7LT-IIc-3)

II. Background Information for Learners

This activity sheets will give you the information about the different levels
of biological organization from cell to biosphere. In previous years, you have
learned that the human body is made up of organ system that works together
to help organism meet their basic needs and to survive.

Living things are organized and structured, following a hierarchy that

can be examined on a scale from small to large. The atom is known to be the
smallest particle of matter. It consists of a nucleus surrounded by electrons.
Atoms form molecules which are chemical structures consisting of at least two
atoms held together by chemical bonds. Many molecules that are biologically
important are macromolecules, this are large molecules that are typically
formed by polymerization. A specific example is a macromolecule which is
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that contains the instructions for the structure
and functioning of all living organisms.

All living things are made of cells, and the cell itself is the smallest
essential unit of structure and function in living organisms. This requirement is
why viruses not considered living: they are not made up of cells. To make new
viruses, they have to invade the reproductive mechanism of a living cell; only
then can they obtain the materials they need to reproduce. Some organisms
composed of a single cell and others are multicellular. In larger organisms,
cells combine to make tissues, which are groups of similar cells performing
similar or related functions.

The organ system is a higher level of organization that composed of

functionally related organs. Mammals have many organ systems. The
circulatory system transports blood through the body and to and from the
lungs; it includes organs such as the heart and blood vessels. Furthermore,
organisms are individual living entities. Each tree in a forest is an organism.
Single-celled prokaryotes and single-celled eukaryotes are also organisms and
are typically referred to as microorganisms.

Individuals of a species living in a specific area are collectively called a

population. For example, a forest may consist of many pine trees. The pine
trees represent the population of pine trees in the forest. Different populations
may live in the same area. For example, the forest with the pine trees includes
populations of flowering plants and also different insects and microbial
populations. A community is the sum of populations inhabiting a certain area.

1
All of the trees, flowers, insects, and other populations found in the forest form
the forest’s community. The forest itself is an ecosystem. An ecosystem
consists of all the living things in a particular area together with the abiotic
which is the non-living parts of that environment such as nitrogen in the soil or
rain water. As the highest level of organization, the biosphere is the collection
of all ecosystems, and it represents the zones of life on earth. This includes
land, water, and even the atmosphere to a certain extent. Forming together,
all of these levels comprise the biological levels of organization, which range
from organelles to the biosphere.

These activity sheets will help you understand the concept of levels of
biological organization in an organism. You will learn what makes up an
organism, that what happens to smaller structure will affect the bigger
structure and the organism as a whole that anything happens to this smaller
structure will affect the organ, and the organ system.

IV. Activity Proper

1. Directions: Read and study the Levels of Biological Organization and

make this as your guide in answering the 3 activities given in the
succeeding pages of these learning activity sheets.

• There are 5 levels of organization in multicellular organisms

• From smallest to largest- Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System,
Organism

Cell It is the basic unit of

structure and function
in all living things

Tissue It is a group of cells

that work together to
do a specific job in
plants and animals

Organ In an organism,
structure made of two
or more different
tissues which have a
specialized function.

2
Example: heart
Organ It is a group of organs
system that work together to
do a specific job.
Example: circulatory
system
