Sir,
1) I am very tired of seeing so much waste in a world where many people who live in
more difficult circumstances than us suffer shortages of food, energy and other basic
necessities.
2) Each day at my local supermarket, enormous quantities of food which is near its sell-
by date are thrown away when it could easily be given to charities for the homeless.
3) People often throw away electronic equipment, such as flat-screen TVs, computers or
mobile phones when the item is only four or five years old.
4) Cars with only one driver in them sit in traffic jams with their engines running,
burning fuel unnecessarily.
5) Clothes, especially items of fashion clothing, are so cheap nowadays that people think
nothing of wearing something once or twice then throwing it away.

2b) Possible answers:

Sir,
I agree totally with James Needham (Daily Times, 4th May). The decision to build a new
block of flats (1) for wealthy families / with over 70 apartments on part of what is now
Summerdine Park is shocking. This park not only contains many species of trees, (2) for
example birch and beech trees / such as the black poplar tree, which is not found
anywhere else in the city, it is also one of the few green spaces in the area, (3) where old
and young people can come and relax. There are certainly other more suitable places to
build new housing, (4) like the old industrial estate in Meadow Leys. It would be better to
develop areas like this (5) because they are ugly and in need of modernizing.

Fran: I think you’d be better off calling them. …
Andy: Yeah, you’re right. I’d better do that this afternoon. It’s better to know than not.
