IV- Choose the item among A, B, C or D that best answers the question about the passage:
It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education.
Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction
between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can
take place anywhere, whether in the shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes
both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents
of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child
to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces
surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other
religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term.
It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral
part of one's entire life.
Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one
setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take
assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices
of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of
government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high
school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in
their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions
surrounding the formalized process of schooling.

V- Choose the item among A, B, C or D that best answers the question about the passage:
Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either become extinct or
have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once roamed the jungles in vast
numbers, now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is estimated that they will become extinct.
What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused almost
entirely by poachers who, according to some sources, are not always interested in material gain but in
personal gratification. This is an example of the callousness that is contributing to the problem of extinction.
Animals such as the Bengal tiger, as well as other endangered species, are valuable parts of the world’s
ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival - and the
survival of our planet.
Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some countries, in an
effort to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land to animals reserves. They then charge
admission prices to help defray the costs of maintaining the parks, and they often must also depend on world
organizations for support. This money enables them to invest in equipment and patrols to protect the animals.
Another response to the increase in animal extinction is an international boycott of products made from
endangered species. This has had some effect, but by itself it will not prevent animals from being hunted and
killed.

Mock test No3
I. Read the passage and choose A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to
use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are
more than a means of communication - having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.
The explosion in mobile phone use around the world has made some health professionals worried. Some
doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile
phones. In England, there has been a serious debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are worried
about the negative publicity of such ideas. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for
your health.
On the other hand, medical studies have shown changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile
phones. Signs of change in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning
equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at young age because of serious memory loss. He
couldn't remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk
on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. His
family doctor blamed his mobile phone use, but his employer's doctor didn't agree.
What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. High-tech machines
can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is
some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about.
As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it's best to use mobile phones less often.
Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really need
it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones
may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health. So for now, it's wise not to use your mobile
phone too often.

VI- There are ten mistakes in the following passage (grammar or spelling). Find the mistakes and
correct them.
When we first took our two children to sea with us, it was rare to come across
other family on sailing boats.Usually such meetings resulted in children quickly
making friends while the parents discuss how we managed. At firstly, I was worried
about taking children to sea and I had many questions. However would I amuse
them? What if they fell ill at sea? Add to such questions was the major problem of
their education. When we set out on our voyage, my duaghter was seven, my son
five, and we planned to sail for three years. That we only returned to england six
years late with 60,000 miles behind us andchildren of thirteen and eleven years old,
is an indicate of how my worries had been answered. One change over these years
has been the increasing in the number of parents who take their children to sea on
long voyages. Thus what I shall be saying here is based not only on my own
experiences, but also on those of others, many of whom have taken their children
cruising around the world.

For animals other than mammals, then, feeding is not intrinsic to parental care. Animals
add it to their reproductive strategies to give them an edge in their lifelong quest for
descendants. The most vulnerable moment in any animal's life is when it first finds itself
completely on its own, when it must forage and fend for itself. Feeding postpones that
(20) moment until a young animal has grown to such a size that it is better able to cope. Young
that are fed by their parents become nutritionally independent at a much greater fraction
of their full adult size. And in the meantime those young are shielded against the vagaries
of fluctuating of difficult-to-find supplies. Once a species does take the step of feeding its
young, the young become totally dependent on the extra effort. If both parents are
(25) removed, the young generally do no survive.

VIII- The passage below contains 10 mistakes. Pick them out and correct them( 0. from→ of) has been done as
an example:
Most people are afraid from sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them. For
example, there are 350 kinds of sharks, and all of them are eaters meat. Some sharks are very big. The whale
shark is 50 and 60 feet long. But some sharks are very small. The dwarf shark is only 6 inches long. Sharks
are 100 million year old. In fact, they lived at the same time with dinosaurs. Today, sharks live in every
ocean in the world, but most sharks live in warm water. They keep the oceans cleaning because they eat sick
fish and animals. Most sharks have four to six lines of teeth. When a shark's tooth falls out another tooth
move in from before. Sharks do not have ears. However, they "hear" sounds and movements in the water.
Any sound or movement causes the water vibrate. Sharks can feel these vibrations and they help the sharks
find food. Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too. Most sharks see wellest in low light. They often hunt
for food at dawn, in the evening, or in the middle of the night. Scientists want to learn more about sharks for
several reasons. For example , cancer is common in many animals, including people. However, it is rare in
sharks. Scientists want to find out what sharks almost never get cancer. Maybe this information can help
people prevent cancer too.

IV- Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 41 to 50.
Recent technological advances in manned and unmanned vehicles, along with breakthroughs in
satellite technolog y and computer equipment, have overcome some of the limitations of divers and diving
equipment for scientists doing research on the great oceans of the world. Without a vehicle, divers often
became sluggish, and their mental concentration was severely limited. Because undersea pressure
affects their speech organs, communication among divers has always been difficult or impossible. But
today, most oceanographers avoid the use of vulnerable human divers, preferring to reduce the risk to
human life and make direct observations by means of instruments that are lowered into the ocean, from
samples take from the water, or from photographs made by orbiting satellites. Direct observations of the
ocean floor can be made not only by divers but also by deep -diving submarines in the water and even by
the technology of sophisticated aerial photography from vantage points above the surface of more than
seven miles and cruise at depths of fifteen thousand feet. In addition, radio -equipped buoys can be
operated by remote control in order to transmit information back to land-based laboratories via satellite.
Particularly important for ocean study are data about water temperature, currents, and weather. Satellite
photographs can show the distribution of sea ice, oil slicks, and cloud formations over the ocean. Maps
created from satellite pictures can represent the temperature and the color of the ocean's surface,
enabling researchers to study the ocean currents from laboratories on dry land. Furthermore, computers
help oceanographers to collect, organize, and analyze data from submarines and satellites. By creating a
model of the ocean's movement and characteristics, scientists can predict the patterns and possible
effects of the ocean on the environment.
Recently, many oceanographers have been relying more on satellites and computers than on
research ships or even submarine vehicles because they can supply a greater range of information more
quickly and more effectively. Some of humankind's most serious problems, especially t h o s e concerning
energy and food, may be solved with the help of observations made possible by this new technology.
