ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

MATERIAL CONTROL, BLACK BOX COMPONENTS WSS-M99P23-C1

MATERIAL CONTROL, GRAY BOX COMPONENTS WSS-M99P23-C2

1. SCOPE

The requirements of these specifications apply to all classes of materials.

2. APPLICATION

These specifications provide direction to the suppliers of black or gray box components regarding the
required material/process documentation.

Black box components are defined for purposes of this standard as those which are supplied without
modification to Ford Motor Company ("off-the-shelf" designs). Ford must design all mating interfaces to
accommodate a black box component, and accepts design and material selection as is.

Gray box components are defined for purposes of this standard as those which are jointly designed by
the supplier and Ford Motor Company. Ford will direct the design or material selection for portions of a
gray box component.

Build-to-print components are defined for purposes of this standard as those which are designed by
Ford Motor Company and manufactured by Ford or a supplier. Ford will direct the design and material
selection for the whole of a build-to-print component.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS

Material suppliers and part producers shall conform to the Company's Standard Requirements
for Production Materials WSS-M99P1111-A.

3.2 MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION

3.2.1 Black Box Components – WSS-M99P23-C1

All materials used at the end-item or serviceable component mating interface shall be
defined on the Engineering Drawing, using Industry Standards. If Industry Standards
are not available, the material supplier source, trade name and product code should
be used. All applicable process standards (e.g. heat treatment, anodizing, shot
peening, etc.) shall be included in the list of materials defined on the Engineering
Drawing. Detailed information on the content and format of materials information
appearing on Engineering Drawings can be found in Ford Motor Company
Engineering CAD & Drafting Standard E-1 – Notes.

ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

WSS-M99P23-C1/C2

For all other materials not identified on the Engineering Drawing, the supplier shall
maintain a "Materials Document" that lists all of the component parts including
supplier part numbers and materials to be used for each part. The purpose of the
"Materials Document" is to provide ready access to this information should Ford
become engaged in solving issues related to the component. Supplier material
specifications or Industry Standards (e.g. ISO, ASTM, SAE, EN, BS or DIN) may be
used. If a specification/standard is not available, list the material supplier source,
trade name and product code. Generic terms such as "steel", "oil", "plastic" or
"rubber" are not acceptable. The "Materials Document" shall be included in the Initial
Part Submission Warrant documentation.

Ford Materials Engineering accepts the materials listed on the Engineering Drawing
and the "Materials Document" but neither acknowledges nor approves the materials
listed therein. Ford Materials Engineering does not review the "Materials Document"
prior to Engineering Drawing release but will review the materials listed on the
Engineering Drawing to ensure interface compatibility, such as galvanic compatibility
and proper bolted joint design, where necessary prior to Engineering Drawing
release.

3.2.2 Gray Box Components – WSS-M99P23-C2

All materials used at the end-item or serviceable component mating interface,

corrosion protection finishes and/or coatings on all external surfaces, and all Ford-
directed materials shall be defined on the Engineering Drawing. Ford Material
Specifications or Industry Standards may be used. If the preceding is not available,
the material supplier source, trade name and product code should be used.
All applicable process standards (e.g. heat treatment, anodizing, shot peening, etc.)
shall be included in the list of materials defined on the Engineering Drawing. Detailed
information on the content and format of materials information appearing on
Engineering Drawings can be found in Ford Motor Company Engineering CAD &
Drafting Standard E-1 – Notes.

Ford Material
Specifications, supplier material specifications or Industry Standards (e.g. ISO,
ASTM, SAE, EN, BS or DIN) may be used. If a specification/standard is not available,
list the material supplier source, trade name and product code. Generic terms such
as "steel", "oil", "plastic" or "rubber" are not acceptable. The "Materials Document"
shall be included in the Initial Part Submission Warrant documentation.

Ford Materials Engineering signoff of a Gray Box Component drawing approves the
use of the materials listed on the Engineering Drawing. Approval is based upon prior
experience with the application and best engineering judgment. Ford Materials
Engineering does not review the "Materials Document" prior to Engineering Drawing
release, and neither acknowledges nor approves the materials listed therein.

3.3 RESTRICTED SUBSTANCE REPORTING

Material suppliers and part producers shall report on the materials content of their products
using the International Material Data System (IMDS). See the Ford Restricted Substance
Management Standard, WSS-M99P9999-A1, for details.

3.4 PARTS MARKING

All polymeric (plastic, elastomeric or synthetic fiber) parts shall be marked for recycling per Ford
Motor Company Engineering CAD and Drafting Standard E-4.

All non-ferrous metal (aluminum, magnesium or zinc) parts shall be marked for recycling per
Ford Motor Company Engineering CAD and Drafting Standard E-5. (Not applicable for Ford of
Europe and Premier Automotive Group brands.)

3.5 SUPPLIER SUBMISSIONS

When requested, the supplier shall submit the "Material Document", and/or production
representative samples, for retention by the Design Activity and/or for evaluation by the affected
Materials Engineering Office.
