Title:
Impact of Child Labour on Mental and Physical Health

Introduction:
My name is Maria Batool. My Roll number is 03.I am student of B.S
Sociology Fifth Semester in The Women University Multan. I live in Qasim Pur Colony
near B.C.G Chowk Multan.

Actually “Child Labour” originates from two words “child” young human being below 18
years; and ‘Labour” piece of work done for wages. ILO (International Labour
Organization), an agency of UNO; defines international labour standards as guidelines
for governments. Child labour is defined as “Children undertaking work in labour
market or household that deprives of their childhood, potential and dignity, being harmful
to their physical and mental development”.
Literature Review:
Azhar Hussain: He argued that Child Labour is very concerning issue in
all over the World. Children suffer from physical, mental and social harm that change
their life. Although government has passed law stopping Child Labour but these laws
are not regulated enough to establish a child labour free country .The children of
Pakistan work in different industries, shops , on the street and in home due to less
income and poor safety conditions. They are challenged physically and burdened
mentally.

Laila Pirani: She argued that Child Labour has many negative outcomes. According to
International Labour Organization(ILO) Child Labour is important source of child abuse
and child exploitation from the world. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan
estimated the number of of children which are working in different countries and other
cities. Author argued that we need to remove the child labour from the World. So, that
children remain away from many public health issues which they are facing girls and
boys both.

Objectives:
∙To study the basic demographic characteristics of Child Labourers and to ascertain
their working condition

∙To promote Primary education among the economically underprivileged children

∙Prevent gender based sex selective elimination

∙To promote eco-family living

∙To work for uplifting poor rural/village children’s for their overall development

Area of Profile:
Main Body:
Child Labour in Pakistan is the employment of children for work in
Pakistan, which causes them mental, physical, moral and social harm. The Human
Rights Commission of Pakistan estimated that in the 1990s, 11 million children
were working in the country, half of whom were under age ten.

In 2019, Pakistan made a moderate advancement in efforts to eliminate the worst forms
of child labor. Punjab Province adopted the Punjab Domestic Workers Act of 2019,
which prohibits children under age 15 from working in any domestic service capacity.
The Pakistan National Assembly also passed the Islamabad Capital Territory Prohibition
of Employment of Children Act. In addition, the Islamabad Capital Territory established
its Child Protection Advisory Board, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan
provincial labor departments earmarked specific funds from their budgets to conduct
child labor surveys. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province also established a dedicated child
labor unit. Children in Pakistan are engaged in the worst forms of child labor, including
in commercial sexual exploitation and domestic work, each sometimes as a result of
human trafficking.

Research Methodology:
This was a cross-sectional community bases study. Many
child labours were selected. Areas surveyed included B.C.G Chowk and Main Market
Mumtazabad of Multan.Children are owing to difficulties in speaking and understanding
because they were afraid of their masters.

Me and my brother visited many shops for survey in our area. First we visited Al Afia
Rewari Sweets near G.C.T Multan where Muhammad Zubair and Muhammad Aamir
were working, both were primary passed students. Due to their poor background they
could not continue their studies. Then we went to Aamir Auto Care Center Gulzaib
Colony Vehari Road Multan, where Subhan and Shaban were working as a Machanic.
Subhan was 7 years old and belonged to poor family. While Shaban was 13 years old,
he was also studying in the 8th class in the nearby government school.

Data Analysis:
It is a qualitative research. It is defined as a market research method
that focuses on obtaining data through open-ended and conversational communication.

Discussion:
According to UNICEF most working children are aged 11 to 14 years old.
Many children’s are forced to work as labourers due to poverty before they ever enter
school majority of them leave school in middle of study to become labourers. The
problem of child labour is closely associated with poverty. Last year Human Rights
Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) was estimated that child can be found in every
factory, every workshop. Our results are same where majority of children work in shops
and workshops as a mechanics and 22.5% of the study population earn less than PKR
500/month.

Conclusion:
At last I come to know that majority of Child Labours are compelled to
work due to poverty and having large families. They work more as compared to money
they receive in return. Therefore they become child labor.
