Hermann Karl Hesse (July 2, 1877, Kingdom of

Württemberg, German Empire - August 9, 1962, Montag Nola, Canton of
Ticino, Switzerland) was a German writer, poet, novelist and painter, Swiss
nationalized. He was born in Calw, a town located in Wurtemberg, where he
spent the first three years of his life.

He remained in the bookselling business until 1904, when he became a

freelance writer and brought out his first novel, Peter Camenzind.

He decides to live in neutral Switzerland when World War 1 breaks out, wrote
denunciations of militarism and nationalism, and edited a journal for German
war prisoners and internees. He became a permanent resident of Switzerland
in 1919 and the Swiss government granted him nationality in 1924.

When Hesse presented a deepening sense of personal crisis, he approached

psychoanalysis with J.B. Lang, a disciple of Carl Jung.

when he publishes his novel Demian (1919), we can observe the influence of
analysis, an examination of the achievement of self-awareness by a troubled
teenager. This novel had a widespread effect on a troubled Germany and
brought him great fame.

break out of the established modes of civilization so as to find an essential
spirit and identity. The academy awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature in
1946.

When Hesse was supposed to attend the ceremony to receive the award, he
decided to send only a short letter to justify his absence.
