Ellen Thorbecke - From Peking To Paris

Lecturis 2021 ISBN 9789462264175 Acqn 31555
Hb 23x29cm 288pp col ills £51.25

Journalist and photographer Ellen Thorbecke (1902-1973) spent most of the 1930s in China,
working as a correspondent for newspapers in Berlin. She made series of portraits and
photographed street scenes in Peking (now Beijing), Shanghai, and Hong Kong, as well as in
rural areas. This material formed the basis of five books that reflect an unbiased and unbridled
curiosity about people at all levels of Chinese society. Her energy and wealth of artistic talent led
to an unconventional life of global travel and prolific camera work, both during and after the
turbulent interwar period. Many of her pictures from Palestine, Paris, and the Netherlands also
appear, some for the first time.

Tomoko Sawada - To Be Bewitched By A Fox

Seigensha Art Publishing 2021 ISBN 9784861528361 Acqn 31586
Hb 11x15cm 300pp col ills £30.95

Despite its small dimensions, this book contains the artistic journey of Tomoko Sawada, including
many pivotal series and themes which she has addressed over the years. It is published in
conjunction with Sawada's first solo exhibition at a Japanese art museum, the Tokyo
Photographic Museum. The feminist artist has consistently used her own figure and face as a
means of expression in various methods of self-portraiture and extensive series of characters. In
addition to unveiling new works, the book focuses on her art production and how it has evolved
through questioning the differences between "interior" and "exterior," illustrated by her influential
debut piece and representative works.

Uruma Takezawa – Boundary

Seigensha Art Publishing 2021 ISBN 9784861528316 Acqn 31590
Hb 22x30cm 180pp col ills £72

Breath-taking natural landscapes in Iceland. Human activities in Africa, South America, Tibet,
Jerusalem, and elsewhere. Often taking the symbolic freedom of a bird's-eye view, photographer
Uruma Takezawa goes back and forth between the "boundaries" between these two worlds, the
majestic, sublime chaos of nature and our grasping attempts to instil order upon our existence.
Here the world of black and white, waves and snow, striations and cracks, religion and borders all
collide. In gorgeous pictures where serenity and entropy trade places and boundaries dissolve,
Takezawa questions the significance of the boundary, showing how humans are also part of the
earth.

Neil Folberg - A Mirror In Macedonia

Lecturis 2021 ISBN 9789462264021 Acqn 31545
Hb 26x20cm 104pp col ills £38.50

Drawn to Macedonia in 1971 by its vibrant folk culture, Neil Folberg received a fellowship from the
University of California at Berkeley to photograph this rugged, mountainous land and its people,
then part of Yugoslavia. Folberg's task was complicated by the police and state security services.
Folberg surrounds black and white portraits with an essay about the work, its social and artistic
context, and of his conversations with Ansel Adams and William Garnett, the masters with whom
he studied. Born in San Francisco in 1950, he now lives in Israel, where he runs Vision Gallery in
Jerusalem.

Sander Van Wettum – Hibernation

Eriskay Connection 2021 ISBN 9789492051677 Acqn 31600
Hb 17x32cm 96pp col ills £36

Within just half a century, the sun-drenched coastlines of Southern Europe have been
transformed into a global tourist destination. The agglomeration of overdeveloped beach towns
resulting from this unceasing mass tourism no longer shows any discernible relationship with the
surroundings, country, or history. Sander van Wettum's 'Hibernation' is an exploration of the off-
season state of these places, a journey through surreal architecture, spaces, and atmospheres,
photographed at times when their intended functional context has dissolved and new realities
appear. We are invited to envision our own narratives, while also seeing the detrimental
consequences of mass tourism.

Mathias De Lattre - Mother's Therapy

Eriskay Connection 2021 ISBN 9789492051646 Acqn 31554
Pb 24x30cm 136pp col ills £39.50

Around ten years ago, Mathias de Lattre's interest in psychedelics led him to begin researching
psilocybin, the naturally occurring hallucinogenic substance produced by around 180 species of
fungus. He had the intuition that such mushrooms might constitute an alternative to the
psychiatric treatment his mother, who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was receiving.
His search took him from the prehistoric painted caves in France and traditional medicinal
practices in the Peruvian jungle, to scientists researching psilocybin in London and Zurich.
Through texts and images, 'Mother's Therapy' brings together science and humanity, providing
context for his mother's "cure".

The Mullet Atlas - The Hague The Netherlands

Lecturis 2021 ISBN 9789462264120 Acqn 31604
Hb 24x30cm 160pp col ills £51

Some call it a mullet. The Flemish call it a neck carpet. The Dutch refer to it as "de mat". And the
iconic hairstyle continues to be a trend in The Hague, where photographers Daniel Heikens and
Rein Langeveld have been collaborating with designer Joost Nijhuis on a project about "De
Haagse mat". It started as a hobby but quickly got out of hand, and the resulting photo book
captures a large number of mullets and the cultural phenomena behind it. Designed like a true
atlas, it includes geographical maps, pictograms, and statistics based on interviews with the
gentlemen. The so-called "Matlas" is born!
