Module: 2 Artifact: Library Mission Statement

1. Explain how this artifact show growth towards becoming a TL:

I chose this artifact for my personal portfolio because I feel that having a clear mission
statement and vision is essential in order to be an effective teacher librarian. Without a
mission statement that I feel passionate about, I feel that I would have many
challenges with advocacy and with creating a library learning commons with a clear
“reason for being”. In order to come up with my own mission statement, it was
beneficial to explore mission statements of various libraries, read about the goals of a
mission statement and think deeply about the kind of experiences I want my school
community to have when they are in the LLC or working with their TL. I chose this
artifact because I believe that having a strong, clear, guiding mission statement is
fundamental to being an effective TL.

2. Describe the progression of creating this artifact (attach drafts, feedback, and final
project):

Library Mission Statement” sections on Module 2 page of

3. Explain why this artifact reflects higher level thinking (Bloom’s Taxonomy chart):

This artifact reflects higher level thinking in the levels of knowledge, application,
synthesis and evaluation. In order to come up with a mission statement of my own,
first I had to learn about and understand the purpose of a mission statement including
how it differed from a vision statement. After that, I needed to explore various mission
statements and apply ideas that I agreed with, making them my own. Finally, I needed
to synthesize the ideas that most accurately represented my mission as a TL and edit
and revise my mission statement until it felt just right. The last step was to review my
peer evaluations and apply their feedback, shortening my mission statement to 25
words or less and rewording parts until I felt it captured my reason for being perfectly.
