Citizens Protest Masking Students

By Guy Leonard
Staff Writer
About 40 residents, some adults,
some children, protested the re-
quirement of students to wear
masks when school starts Aug. 30
in St. Mary’s County.
School Superintendent Dr. J.
Scott Smith has said the rapid rise
in Delta variant COVID-19 cases
necessitates masking of all stu-
dents for at least the near future.
Smith announced Aug. 11, the
same day as the protest, that Aug.
16 would begin mandatory mask-
ing at all school buildings.
“I’m here to stand against medi-
cal tyranny,” said Elisabeth Gon-
zales, of Mechanicsville, who said
she will homeschool three of her
five children because of the mask-
ing requirement.
“They’ll eventually mandate
vaccinations for everyone.”
Candidate for county commis-
sioner Markus Drake said he be-
lieved masks for students should
be a personal choice.
