MUN 101

WEBINAR

During the MUN conference, there is a session called the General Speaker List
(GSL) where the delegates have a chance to speak in front of other delegates after
getting the Board of Dais (BoD) permission. Probably around a minute and a half, so
you have to manage it efficiently.

1. Be aware of the topic discussed in your council and do the research

about it based on your assigned country’s policy. Find the idea of how to
solve the problem based on the country’s perspective.

2. Open your speech with something interesting that is related to the topic
like:

Statistics

If you do like numbers and something that can be measured, you could add
some of that and usually, it will grab the attention of the audience if it’s interesting
or surprising.

Example: “Over 1 billion people around the world live on less than US$1 a day.
Over 1 billion people live in extreme poverty.”

Questions

Another thing that’s quite powerful to attract the audiences is by asking a question
to the audience.

Example: “Do you think it is possible for us to live in a world without poverty?
Because the people in our country think it’s still possible. We believe we can
achieve the end of poverty.”

Quotes

You can state some famous quotes related to the topic briefly to build the
atmosphere of the conference itself. You don’t have to put the long quote, it’s
unnecessary as the time is limited.

Example: “Fifty years ago, United States President John F. Kennedy said, ''Ask not
what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.’ Today, ask
not what the world can do for you, but what you can do for the world.”

Story

By telling a story, you can certainly grab the audiences’ attention if you deliver it
right. However, since the speeches in the MUN conference are typically very short,
so keep the story short and brief!

Example: “In 2012, in rural Pakistan, a girl was walking to school when a gunshot
rang out – and she was shot in the head. But that girl survived, and today, she fights
for girls’ right to education around the world. That girl’s name is Malala.”

Please keep in mind in order to deliver it right, you have to:

1. Control your voice tone.
2. Catch your breath.
3. Stay focused with what you want to say by jot down into a small note.

3. You must state your main idea or point. You can state your idea on how to
solve the problem based on the information that you’ve researched before.

4. Finish your speech by persuading the other delegates to call the real action
through your idea or point that has been presented to the floor.
