2. Grammar clues.

2.1 Quantifiers

As the word indicates, the quantifiers are words used with countable or non-count nouns
to express quantities or amounts. Quantifiers can be words or phrases.

Use one, each and every with singular count nouns

Examples

one polo shirt each student every employee

*Be careful: Each of and one of is used only with plural nouns.

Examples: each cardigan each of the cardigans

one assistant one of the assistants

There are quantifiers that you use just with plural count nouns.

Examples

two chairs both girls a pair of gloves

a few movies several guests a number of students

a couple of shirts at least five a majority of dresses

*Be careful: You can use a majority of with singular count nouns with more than one
person. Respect the third person agreement

A majority of fashion designers considers slacks are wild for formal events.

A majority of flight attendants prefers short skirts.

 There are quantifiers used exclusively with noun-count nouns.

Examples

*Be careful: You can use some of the previous quantifiers with of when you have a noun
preceded by a possessive adjective, a possessive noun, a demonstrative adjective or
even the article ‘the’.

2.2 The prefix Self-

A prefix can be a letter or a group of letters used to change the meaning of words when
you add it at the beginning. You must use a hyphen (-) with nouns or adjectives with self.

Examples:

Pity: Being sorry. (noun)

Self- Pity: Being sorry for oneself. (with prefix)

Changing of meaning with adjectives and nouns

● With Noun:

Self- image: your concept or opinion about your own appearance.

● With Adjective

Self- conscious: When you are worried about someone's opinion towards your
appearance.

Examples in context

A lot of people improve their self-image after changing their clothing style.

Nowadays all young people like to wear casual clothes so you feel self-conscious
wearing elegant clothes.
