2. Grammar clues.

2.1. Definite and indefinite nouns

A noun is considered indefinite when you are not referring specifically to a thing, idea,
place, or person. That is to say that you need to use the articles a/an in these cases.

Remember! The explanation above is just for indefinite singular count nouns, not
for indefinite non-count nouns such as (nature, technology, love)

Example:

 You can book a cheaper flight if you surf the net after midnight. (It is any flight not
a specific one)

 Nature is amazing when it comes to being relaxed and forget about your routine.
(There is no need to use the article with a non-count noun)

Different from the indefinite nouns, definite are specific when you talk about a person,
thing or place. In this case you would have to use the article: the.

Remember! If you mention an indefinite noun for a second time, it is necessary to use
the article: the.

Example:

 The food they serve in that restaurant is delicious.

 I really don’t like motorcycles but the motorcycle my brother bought is very
comfortable. (Motorcycle was mentioned for a second time).

2.2 Indirect speech

When you want to report a general idea, it is necessary to use the subject IT plus a passive
reporting verb and finally a noun clause.

Remember! The verb you use in the noun clause represents the tense of the situation
you reported.

Example:

 It is proved that global warming is becoming worst.

 It is said that teenagers are very dependent on technology nowadays.

3. Practice the clues

3.1. Correct the sentences using either indefinite articles (a/an), definite articles or indirect

2. ______ bus I take to school, always takes a lot of time to pass by.

3. It is always _________(inform) to people that it’s important to have a first aid kit in

9. ______ car I had when I was young was very defective.

10. Education is one of the most important factors in order to have _______well-

3.2. Make three examples for each grammatical explanation: Indefinite articles, definite

______________________________________________________________________________________.

 ______________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________.

 ______________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________.

4. Clues in context.

Working at a school is not at all easy.

Teachers need to be well prepared in order
to be able to handle several issues students
face throughout their childhood and in
secondary with teenagers. Most of these
students have a silly behavior and when
their condition is not investigated, some of
them start being medicated. There is a type
of medicine which is known as placebo that
it is not a genuine medicine. This is
commonly used nowadays to make people
think they are being medicated and it has
been proved that it is actually effective.

Several illnesses are something related to mind control. Hence, people need to be careful
when they take any kind of medicine since there is a lack of knowledge about how

effective or ineffective it is. On the other hand, talking about controlling one’s mind,
phobias are present all the time and they play with people’s minds and fears. It is very
difficult to share time with a person who suffers from acrophobia due to having to change
plans for something that is not too extreme, especially when it’s something related to
heights. There are some others who cannot visit the countryside because of avoiding
contact with nature. It would be impossible to disappear all the snakes or spiders there are
in nature to avoid the arachnophobics or ophidiophobics not to get a shocking episode.

5. Use the clues.

5.1. Complete the following gaps with the grammar reviewed above and answer the
questions.

 How could you describe________ weather in this picture?

______________________________________________________________________________________.

 What do you think ____________________ (believe) about students using the internet
to do homework all the time?
