BURNING QUESTIONS

Script for Presentation

SLIDE 1: BURNING QUESTIONS
Good morning everyone let me provide a good showcase of our parlor game and
its backbone. Our activity is entitled burning question – as it is written it is an elevated
introductory game that takes traditional personal introductions into a whole ‘nother level.
The tagline pretty much encompasses the entirety and soul of the game as it is indeed a
way in gauging first impressions while creating long lasting connections. Burning
question has this impeccable ability to stamp eternal marks by posing intriguing
questions that focuses more on knowing our peers in a deeper more personal level. We
highly recommend this game to those who just found their group to better understand
them without boundaries and without limitations. Although this would be beneficial or
thrive more in an environment where the clique needs to stay together for a long period
of time for them to get a sense of each of their unique personalities.

SLIDE 2: INITIAL PRESENTATION

The content of this presentation includes four core areas. First is the title of the
game which explains the origin and inspiration of our group for this activity. Burning
question is a birthchild of strenuous collaborative ideas and was derived from pre-
existing social games. Next one would be the rationale of this game as I outline the
purpose and objectives of this activity. Burning questions was built in the foundations of
adaptability and innovation – it is a fresh take on how we form relationships and
connections through the fluctuating waves of time. Third would be the participants
where I present the players and the materials needed for the actualization of this
activity. This game doesn’t need a lot of shenanigans as it only asks for integral pieces
depending on what is available and the nature at which the game will be played – either
physical or virtual. Lastly, would be the rules of the game where I’ll set the chronological
flow of our activity. I’ll explain these concepts further in the succeeding slides. At the
end of this presentation, we prepared a simulation of an actual gameplay for Burning
Questions.

SLIDE 3: INTRODUCTION
Burning Questions in a nutshell is an introductory game crafted to elevate
traditional formation of acquaintances or personal introductions to a more fun and
exciting level. It is a game geared to ‘expose’ interesting facts amongst the member of
the clique. However, it is worth noting that the questions included in the game are not
offensive or intrusive in any way, shape, or form as these are the very questions that the
participants agreed to answer through a google form prepared by the facilitators. The
inclusion of personal experiences is only those of which the participants are comfortable
and are willing to share. The whole point of the game is for us to change the
introductory landscape as we shift and pan our lenses to focus more on recognizing the
unique personalities and peculiarities of our peers.

SLIDE 4: TITLE SLIDE

Burning Questions gained its moniker from a lineage of coordinating thoughts as
to how these ‘intense’ questions can shed light to the depths of an individual.
SLIDE 5: ORIGIN
While brainstorming we realized that its been months since we first said our
hi’s/hello’s and formal greetings. Its almost the end of our first year in college yet we still
don’t know each other on a deeper level. Burning Question reinforces a new way of
forming acquaintances by showcasing hot, intriguing, and quirky questions about the
block for everyone to connect with each other on a personal level. Questions like “Sino
sa kanila ang may tatlong ex?”, questions that are borderline intrusive yet with consent
from the participants, questions that are not offensive yet quite intriguing to pique the
attention of the players, questions that we don’t normally ask on our first meeting, and
questions that will surely break the ice as we bond together as an emerging robust
block.

INSPIRATION
A game played on a reality show where contestants have to answer questions
about the people they lived with for 30 days. They must answer according to the
consensus of the group. Each player that guessed who was the group's top answer has
the chance to chop at a rope holding back a mallet that smashes a player's statue.
Having their statue smashed means that the player is eliminated. The same logic
applies on human bingo where everyone is forced to interact with their classmates as
they try to strengthen their social and interpersonal communication skills to find the
person corresponding to the given question. Meanwhile, it gained similarity with family
feud as the game centralizes on guessing the person with the highest vote.

SLIDE 6: RATIONALE
Burning Questions came about due to our current situation. The pandemic
greatly shaped how we communicate and limits our perception of other people. Having
this in mind, burning questions somewhat forces us to socialize in a way that we can
harness unique information that we don’t normally get during the first greetings. Burning
Questions is simply a game of pure intuitions and sheer luck.

SLIDE 7: WHY DID WE CHOSE THIS GAME

It is undeniable that the current world health crisis has made conditions a tenfold
challenging to address—it has truly taken a toll on all of us. It has compromised any
prospect to reconnect with those we know and care for and has limited our opportunity
to meet new people. In consonance with the new normal setup, members of the
academic community- from students, to teachers, and up to other academic personnel,
remain fundamentally impeded in terms of building a good academic and non-academic
rapport. The pandemic may have restrained us from doing our usual practices, but it
sure will not stop us from getting to know each other and creating a strong sense of
kinship! Even the worst of times should not stop us from pursuing our innate tendency
to socialize and make the most out of our new journey as freshmen. This, folks, is
precisely why we created Burning Questions! —a platform game made to help players
adapt with the demands of present modes of communication. These demands
necessitate us to be resourceful during a time where almost every movement is
restricted. Instead of being deterred, we must be determined to make life a little less
challenging and a little more exciting! Who said all we can do during these trying times
is to sulk about all our missed experiences and opportunities? Who said we cannot
transcend past the need for physical interactions to get to know each other
meaningfully? NONE, that’s who!

SLIDE 8: FILLER
Now, secure your internet connection, join the conference call, sit back, relax,
and enjoy! Get ready because these burning questions are aching to be answered!

SLIDE 9: PARTICIPANTS
This game was developed with the classroom setting in mind. We thought of a
way to make adjustment periods within the university worthwhile. During these weeks
students can observe their peers and develop a greater sense of what their first
impression was on that person.

SLIDE 10: ONLINE SETTING

Due to our current academic climate, we integrated an online version of this
activity which involves the utilization of kahoot – it is an online quiz platform that enables
ten maximum players to join a private classroom where they can answer the burning
questions. In our block’s case, the class will be divided into three groups with their
respective facilitators so the whole class can play the game simultaneously and orderly.

SLIDE 11: PHYSICAL SETTING

The same procedure applies on a physical setting but we can either opt for
kahoot or a white board. As much as we wanted to make this game more interactive
than it already is, we take into consideration that even though we can get back to our
face-to-face classes we should still adapt on the new normal. This is where this game
thrives as it can operate on a large or small setting. We give the game master a leeway
to either choose kahoot or other written methods as long as everyone follows the new
health protocols imposed by our governing body.

SLIDE 12: PERSONAL QUESTIONNAIRES

Now you might be wondering as to how the facilitators will harvest the questions
to be used in the game itself. Prior to the game, the facilitators will disseminate a google
form that is uniquely crafted and structured to extract the data from our participants. The
form includes pre-structured situational questions such as “Who do you think can
survive a zombie apocalypse?” The person voted for this question leads us to a
conclusion that the class thinks that he/she is quite strong and clever. These situational
questions are formed in a way that the players can derive a sense of conclusion from
the personalities of their peers. We also included open-ended questions like “What are
your guilty pleasures?” These questions on the other hand, gives us a looking glass as
to how we can introduce a new fact about an individual to the class. When it comes to
the actual game the former focuses on the consensus of the class while the latter is just
based on their observation and gut-feeling.

SLIDE 13: RULES

Burning Questions operates on simple rules and transactions. It only requires the
players’ attentiveness and adrenaline rush.

SLIDE 14: RULES

1. This game is played by a group consisting of ten players at most.

2. Before the game, the players will have to answer a Google Forms questionnaire with
their fellow players being the choices. The questionnaire will consist of situational
questions like "Who would easily spend a million dollars in [particular store]?" and even
ask them to share facts about them that their fellow players would not know about.
These answers will then be tallied.

3. The game moderator will then ask the questions "Who's Who" and players will
answer using Kahoot (online) or a whiteboard of who they think the others answered on
the question. For Kahoot, only those players with votes to their name will be used as
choices to accommodate the site's four-choice limit.

SLIDE 15: 3 LIVES

The lives of the players will be signified by eggs to fit the sensual narrative and
nature of the game. Each player will start the round with three lives and after every
question those players who get the wrong answer will have their eggs cracked as they
will be chosen by those who got the right answer. These three eggs will be their right of
passage whether they can proceed or not to the next round. The player with no eggs left
will be immediately eliminated while the player with the most eggs left at the end of the
final round wins the game. In addition to this, Kahoot has a built-in scoreboard setting
which will tally the points of players who can get the correct answers. This feature
makes our life easier as the facilitators. For personal interactions, the lives of each
player will still be in the form of actual eggs but they need to crack it on themselves if
they are chosen by the group.

SLIDE 16 & 17: ENDING SLIDES

That’s it for our initial presentation again this is burning questions. Now let us
proceed to our prepared simulation for you to better understand and envision how the
game will run in an actual setting.

Kapamilya handa ka na ba? (Signal for their response) Let’s play Burning Questions.
We have here today students from varying backgrounds, different upbringings, and
diverse identities. After today, can they gauge their first impressions and build long
lasting connections? Prior to this event the participants were asked to prepare a kahoot
account as they answered a strategically structured google form for us to know their
deepest darkest most valued secrets. Players will be given ample time to choose from
the four names engraved within their kahoot app whom they think suits best in the
following descriptions or questions, after the time is up we will reveal the highest
grossing answer. Players who did not choose the right answer will get the chop. In this
simulation, all of our contestants will have 3 lives each, 3 chances to test their luck, 3
chances to build grounds and rapport with their colleagues, and 3 chances to win
10,000 claps and prayers brought to you by the religious dogma of the Philippines. The
game will prevail until all the questions are asked and the winners will be the player with
the most eggs uncracked. He/she will win prizes from our sponsors: Angels Burger – Sa
unang kagat tinapay lahat, Tender Juicy Hotdog – Sa price na abot kaya sa size na di
mo kaya, and Sogo – Dahil mahal kita gusto ko sa SOGO ka.

For the first question lets look at our kahoot interface! Luningning pasok! (Signal for
Gerald to start sharing his screen)

Read the question and after reading the question say the correct answer then announce
the scoreboards.

(Prepare commentaries on after every question)

That’s it! We have consumed all of our questions. Until next time, this is Burning
Questions.
