Note making and Summarising

Note making-An Important Skill For Students:


1. Keeps lots of information ready for reference.
2.Helps to reconstruct what was written and accelerates recall.

3.Comes in handy in revising lessons before examinations.

Steps For Notemaking:


● First Reading-The text must be read carefully to understand the theme.
The question to be asked should be, ’What is this passage about?”This
helps in getting the TITLE.

Second Reading-Important points related to the main theme should be


underlined. It helps in identifying the key ideas and the supporting details.

● Grouping of the ideas under Headings and subheadings should be done


in a sequential order using the prescribed format and layout.
● Use of known abbreviations and symbols should be there.

KEY (for abbreviations)

Points To Remember:
a] Complete sentences should not be used in note-making

b] Only phrases or single words should be used. The phrases that are
used are indented.

c] The less important facts are written to the right of the more
important ones.

d] The notes are classified into Headings, Sub-headings and Sub-sub-

headings by using a number system.

e]There should be minimum three Headings with three subheadings


under each.The sub -sub points should be minimum two.

f] Abbreviations and symbols which are recognisable have to be used (at


least 4)

g] A key for the abbreviations is to be prepared at the end of the notes.


Summarising / Abstraction:
Note-making is followed by summarising, and it has to be short and
precise while attempting this part.

● Points to remember
1. Refer to the notes, not to the passage, to write the summary
2. It should be written in your own words, and not directly picked up
from the passage
3. Abbreviations should not be used in summary
4. Summary is written in the form of a single paragraph of about 80
words comprising of complete sentences, not phrases.
