How is the design for life cycle similar and different from the design cycle
that you learned about in Module 3? Design a lesson plan to teach a Robotics
11 or 12 lesson.
Design for Life Cycle – incorporates All aspects of the life cycle of the product
are considered, including raw-material extraction from the earth, product
manufacture, use, recycling, and disposal (1997).
Design for Life Cycle Engineering Design Cycle
Goes beyond the design of the Engineering design process
product. It also incorporates mainly focuses on the product
various product life-cycle design.

design. These values include
functional performance,
manufacturability,
serviceability, and
environmental impact (Alting,

Both are cycles that have sub cycles.
Both processes include plan, create, reflect, improve
Lesson 1:
Hook: Watch LEGO Robots.
Discussion: Identify the main steps ZOOM team takes to complete the
task at hand. Scaffold their discussion to identify different steps of
engineering design.
Anticipation Guide: Address misconceptions using an anticipation guide
regarding robotics. Statements can be related to types of robotics,
definition, uses, history, key components and applications.
Communication with Robots activity (60 minutes)
o Students will practice providing instructions to their classmate
who is blindfolded to reach points in a square.
o Students will use certain language to remove ambiguity.
o The goal is to become the first group to have the member with
his/her eyes closed touch all four points, following the RULES.
Introduce the NXT Lego Kit – Assemble the LEGO Taskbot (Outside the
classroom) and Introduce the Maze Challenge.
Flipped Classroom: Introduce the SparkFun Robotics 101 video playlist
(10 videos). Students can watch 2 videos a day.
Lesson #2:
Debrief the first two videos: Intro to Robotics and Angular Motion.
Discussion/Worksheet
Create the Maze for the Lego Taskbot.
Flipped Classroom: SparkFun Robotics 101 episode 3 and 4.
Lesson #3:
Debrief next 2 videos: Linear Motion and Transfer of Motion
Discussion/Activity
Work on the Maze, coding of the Lego Taskbot.
Flipped Classroom: SparkFun Robotics 101 episode 5 and 6.
