Please note:

1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component –
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

Preamble: This course deals with concepts of automation and significance of automation in
manufacturing. The students are taught the principles of control systems, automation system
components and robots in manufacturing automation including various part feeding and material
handling systems
PART A
Automation solutions have improved safety and productivity in many types of businesses. There is a
general perception that if we automate a process then productivity must improve based on the
quality and customer satisfaction. On the other hand, it is also believed that factor such as fear of
losing the jobs, costs for initial investment, modify workflow, tasks and processes may involve
certain rigidity for implementing automation which play a major role in improving manufacturing
productivity. In this background following statement is made:
“Automation is solely responsible for improving productivity in manufacturing”
The debate should address the following factors:
A.1.1. Introduction to the theme of the debate and stance taken
A.1.2. Role of automation in improving productivity of manufacturing
A.1.3. Justification of stance taken with a case study and conclusion
Part B
B.1 In this part of the assignment, you are required to select any one manufacturing industry in
any sector and carry out a study on any one of the automated mechanism adopted in the shop
floor. The report should include the following aspects:
B.1.1. Description of the selected automated mechanism /functions /operation with
justification for the selection
B.1.2. Illustration of the adopted automation system along with a block diagram
B.1.3. Suggestion for improvement with revised block diagram
B.2 CNC machining is termed as subtractive manufacturing in which material is removed from a
solid block using a variety of cutting tools to produce a part. The parts produced are with tight
tolerances and excellent material properties. In this context select a CNC machined
component and prepare a report including the following:
B.2.1. Illustration of the selected component along with its function
B.2.2. Discussion on the adopted drive system for performing CNC operation
B.2.3. Describe the sequence of operations, selection of jigs / fixtures, tools and process
Parameters for producing the selected component
B.2.4. Developing the geometry of the selected component with specifications
*Consult the course leader for approval of Manufacturing Industry (B.1)
and CNC machined component (B.2).
