INSPIRATION OR WORK?

The writer is not a lightning rod in the midst of a storm of creativity. Most of the time invested in
writing consists of a strenuous work that, apart from planning, searching for information and
developing ideas, involves smoothing out rough edges, tracing the precise word, honing - like the
sculptor - rough surfaces , embed the appropriate link so that the words flow smoothly between the
sentences, add reliefs where it is necessary to change the rhythm of the text, specify meanings, silence
refrains, expand ideas and dialogues, eliminate tangled paragraphs, correct distractions and lightness.

To properly face the task of writing, according to teacher Lucila González de Chávez, sometimes
years of study, readings, notes and notes, drafts and corrections, to restructure paragraphs are
required, always trying to achieve an optimal level of expression. This means that a long process of
study and discipline is necessary to express oneself correctly through the written word. In effect,
writing is a complex process, it is practicing patient handwriting on the computer screen or on the
blank page to finally achieve a meaningful surface. Hence, inspiration comes only when we are
working.

2. WHAT IS SCRIPTURE?

It is a coded system of signs.  A code is a combination of rules that shapes a message, and a sign is
everything that is in place or in representation of something, under some aspect or modality. Every
sign carries a meaning that is its sense, and a signifier thanks to which it manifests itself. This means
that a meaning does not exist without a signifier, and vice versa. To demonstrate the inseparable
nature of the sign, the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) compared it to a sheet of
paper, from which the front side cannot be cut without also cutting the back.

This linguist also taught us that the nature of the sign is arbitrary; thus, the idea SOL -for example- is
not linked to the succession of SOL sounds. In such a way that the SOL concept can be represented by
any other signifier.

Having done this parenthesis about what a sign is, let's delve a little into the initial question: what is
writing? Well, writing consists of constructing meanings. Hence, this activity is a personal and
creative act through which thoughts and feelings are developed to explore some aspect of reality and
to analyze the world from one's own point of view. In other words, writing allows for ever more
articulate introspection, opening the psyche (like never before) to the external world and the inner
self.

Writing fosters the cultural and personal growth of the writer who must learn to work with words and
ideas; This means that writing is activating a learning tool. Since this activity is similar to any
complex task (since it is not a spontaneous skill such as conversation), the writer does not write the
texts as the magician takes a rabbit out of his hat, but builds them based on sensitivity, planning,
reading and experience. Let's see what some scholars and writers tell us about writing:

 It is taking the pen to draw and interpret the world from one's own subjectivity. Writing freely
is one of the most amazing knowledge methods. The great thing about writing is that it
becomes a bridge to reach others (Professor Óscar Henao Mejía).

 Writing is an attitude of the soul; it is to walk through the mysteries of the word. Creating
images and threading ideas will always be a conquest of the spirit (Professor Héctor Gómez
Gómez).
 Writing is a slow and complex activity: it requires time, dedication and patience. An
experienced writer can write up to 6 drafts over more than a day to produce a 20-line text
(Professor Daniel Cassany).

 Writing is listening ... listening to the dictation of slow, meticulous observation of reality and
imagination, which is also real (poet Juan Manuel Roca).

 There will be no complete human being, that is, one who is known and made known, without
an advanced degree of possession of his language. Because the individual possesses himself,
he knows himself, expressing what he carries inside, and this expression is only fulfilled
through language, through writing (master Pedro Salinas).

Writing is not only clarifying and ordering information so that it is more understandable, it implies
exercising control over the subject, which is achieved through an organized writing: a text that has a
beginning, a development and an end that does not depart from the approach essential. It is not for
nothing that texts constructed in a logical order are better read, understood and remembered than
those in a random order.

Words are like arcs that go off when someone writes. For this reason, it is necessary to hit the target,
and not by chance; This requires adaptation to the addressee, coherence, lexicographic precision and
structure. It is worthwhile to end this section with the following: writing is generating an enthusiasm
that can last for several long weeks, and I say long weeks because you must have time to analyze,
plan, write, rewrite, and above all, to channel the mind volatile.

3. WRITING AS TECHNOLOGY

"Writing, printing and the computer are all ways of making the word technological", Walter J. Ong.

If we understand technology as the set of knowledge, instruments and procedures typical of an art, a
sector or a trade, then we can say that writing is a technology, insofar as it requires tools for its
realization, it has consigned oral sound on a surface and has separated the word from time. And it is
precisely this technology that has driven human intellectual activity. This one has been about 50,000
years on earth, while the first spelling appeared among the Sumerians of Mesopotamia around 3,500
BC. by C.

Writing, printing, and the computer are ways of making the word technologi- cal, of isolating or
recording thought on a written surface. Hence, what is printed gives us a feeling that the text is always
constructed from a pretext - as Roland Barthes says - it is a stable and concluded reality. This
technology of the intellect was the one that finally facilitated the domestication of the primal mind, in
such a way that what the mind created through the hand, ended up shaping societies. It is worth saying
that many elements of the current civilization have their origin in writing: mathematics, history, laws
and science, among others. Writing as a technology has made possible the current socio-cultural
development, although we see signs every day that indicate that we still live in darkness.
In such a way that writing, unlike spoken language, does not have a biological foundation, since it
does not come from an innate faculty. Linguistic theory holds that the human being is by definition a
speaker; however, his nature does not immediately make him a reader or a writer. With regard to the
spoken word, writing and reading are technologies whose development is autonomous. These are
skills that are acquired through learning.

The Spanish professor and intellectual Jesús Mosterín has said that language is the only
communication code that allows us to express all our thoughts (GRIJELMO, 2001: 85-86). Human
linguistic ability is congenital, and it is as old as our own species. For its part, writing is as recent a
cultural technology as scribes and schools. Like all technologies, writing is susceptible to functional
analysis and rational optimization.
