Abstract-Vastu is a science that has originated from India. Feng shui is an art of harnessing energies. Though
both have a same objective, the benefit of humanity but the principles are very different. It is originated from
India and it is based on our culture, traditions, geographical conditions, climatically conditions and everything
for India. And fengshui is originated in China and based on their culture and traditions. Vastu forms the basics
of each construction, one must follow Vastu from the initial level i.e. from choosing a plot to shift in the house.
Everything should be done according to Vastu principle since Vastu is not merely a word but it is a science and a
bridge between man and nature. Vastu is followed while choosing a plot, how to choose a plot: the shape, the
nature of the soil. When and how to construct a house, how to do the interiors, how to choose colour and when to
shift. Vastu is such a deep science that it is a pool of information and one can have any doubts cleared with
proper reasoning.

Introduction: the basic need of every living being. We

It is a traditional Indian system of
architecture which literally translates to
"science of architecture.” Vastu Shastras
incorporate traditional Hindu and in some
cases Buddhist beliefs. Vastu, in the
simplest words, is the science of direction
that combines all the five elements of nature
and balances them with man and materials.
It has rules, formulas and patterns for the
construction of houses. It is believed to
bring in harmony and aimed towards
drawing positive cosmic energy into
people's lives. It gives you zeal, power,
strength, confidence and money, which
become the driving force behind life and its
processes. The essential premise
of Vastu Shastra is that there is always an
invisible and constant inter-relation between
all five elements. Vaastu/ Vastu Shastra is a
part of Vedas, which are believed to be four
to five thousand years old. The art of Vaastu
originates in the Sthapatya Veda, a part of
the Atharv Veda. Sthapatya Veda, dealing
with the architecture. We can find many
references in Vedas, Puranas and other
subsequent literature. Shelter is the one of
build house for our living and to live a
peaceful, happy and healthy life. A house or
any building constructed as per Vaastu
Shastra ensures maximum benefit to the
habitant.
A structure built on a piece of land is known
as "Vaastu" or "Vastu". It has been derived
from the word "Vaas" which means "to
live". It's practice started with Vedic period.
Our ancient saints have concluded that
anything living or non-living in the universe
is made up of five basic elements or Panch
Maha Bhoot. Vaastu/ Vastu is directly
related to these five elements
which are as follows:-
1. Prithvi (Earth)
2. Jal (Water)
3. Agni (Fire)
4. Vayu (Air)
5. Aakash (Space)
When these five elements are in harmony in
our body, we are healthy and active and
when their equilibrium is disturbed one is
devitalized or unhealthy. Same is true with
our place of living or work. Vaastu Shastra
is the only science which instructs how to
maintain best equilibrium of these five

elements in a building and make best use of
them to energize mental and physical
energies of inhabitants to the maximum
extent. In other words Vaastu tells us how to
make use of these five elements for the
maximum convenience, comfort and
security keeping them in perfect harmony in
our home or place of work so that one
should enjoy health, wealth, prosperity and
growth.
Vaastu Shastra and construction:
It links person's health and happiness
directly with layouts and construction of
a building.In fact “Vastu Shastra” is the
science of the ancient “Vedic Ages” of India
under the guidance of which one can
construct building of structures on a
particular plot of land.
Directions:
The importance of orientation of a
building is not only for saving energy but
also to have a better house design, which not
only gives comfortable living but also gives
good health, prosperity and wealth to the
house owners/occupiers and these families.
There lies a co-relation between the
rotational scenario of the planets and the
house design and their different directions
with respect of NORTH. The building of
any type and its construction meets the
purpose if proper orientation has been given
using suitable local building material. It
increases not only its life span but also
improves the condition of occupants. There
are instances where buildings are not
planned according to required local
orientation were lost or deteriorated much
faster then the buildings having built with
proper studies of orientation. The proper
orientation means the proper knowledge of
all the eight directions. It is a common
knowledge that the direction from where the
Sun arises is known as East and where it sets
as West and when one faces the East

direction, towards one's left is North and
towards one's right is South. The corner
where two directions meet obviously is more
significant since it combines the forces
emanating from both the directions. SO in
all there are eight directions , North,
Northeast, East, East south, South,
Southwest, West, West north. Every
direction has its own significance and has its
own construction. The basic rules of Vastu
Shastra are based on these eight directions.
Vaastu Advise for Residential building :
The meaning of vastu is dwelling,
which is the home for god and humans.
Vastu shastra is based on various energies
that comes from atmosphere like solar
energy from sun, cosmic energy, lunar
energy, thermal energy, magnetic energy,
light energy, wind energy. These energies
can be balanced to enhance peace,
prosperity and success. If a house is made
according to these principles, the inmates
enjoy all the happiness in life. If it is against
vastu principals, it will be a place for all sort
of problems, worries and no peace.Before
purchasing a flat or apartment some basic
things must be considered to make things
going right. Vastu recommend some
essential tips regarding construction and
direction of flat or apartment while if you
are interested in existing flat then Vastu
offers rules regarding existing flat as well.
There are some best permissible directions
in which mirror can be placed without a

hitch to avoid any mishappenings in the
relationships and behaviour. Placement of
mirror should be in accordance with Vastu
norms to reap the good benefits.
Here are some essential tips & norms
attached to the placement of mirror or glass:
Construct or choose a flat/apartment having
entrance in North, East or North-west.
Avoid main door in South, South-west or
South-east.
 Avoid purchasing flats with cuts in North-
east or South-east direction.
 Drainage pipes should have their way in
West, North or North-west.
 Slope of balcony should be towards the East
or North.
 Check out the North-east corner of flat as
this portion must be converted into worship
room or left open.
 Kitchen should be in the South-east
direction.
 Check or construct over-head tank in South-
west and underwater tank in North-east.
Vastu Advise for Office building:
Vastu of office require proper
analysis and orientation of business house,
here are some tips for Vastu office:

 East facing office is considered good
bountiful.
 Avoid irregular shape of the plot while
square or rectangle is best for office
structure.
 Water resource or element if any, must be
placed or installed in North-east of the
office.
 The main head or owner of the business
organization must face North while working
or dealing with clientele.
 Northern or eastern sides are suitable for
executive and other staff.
 Managerial level and other high level people
in the office must be made to sit in Southern
or Western portion so that they must face
North or East while sitting in office
 North-east portion of office should be left
empty with water resource installed.
 Toilets should be built in West or North-
western side while avoid toilet in South-east,
North-east & East.
 Pantry should be constructed in South-east.
 Staircase is best made in South, South-west
or West. Avoid stairs in centre or
Brahmsthan of office.
 Reception must be designed in North-east.
 If there is temple in the office construct in
North-east.
 Do not make employees sit under the beam.
 Waiting room can be made in North-west or
North-east.
 Colours in office should be pleasing and
bright which do not spread sadness or
gloom.
 Attractive pictures should hung on walls
while avoid war or evil depicting pictures.
We have to take care of the following points
while studying about the vastu of the offices.

Some beneficial Vastu tips for
Shop/Showroom are as follows:

such as rectangular or square and avoid
irregular or cut property.

Vastu of factory determines every
aspect to find out the reason of prevailing
problems in the existing factory. Some tips
of Vastu for factory are:
 Choose factory in East, North or North-east
direction in order to bag and make more
profit in long-run.
 The entrance of factory must be in East
direction and main gate should be huge with
two shutters.
 The owner’s office should be constructed in
the East or North portion while owner must
sit facing North for all kind dealing and
discussion.
 For early dispatching and good profits, make
the provision of keeping finished goods in
North-west.
 South or South-west area is appropriate for
workshop and maintenance work.
 Electrical equipments, meters, generators,
boilers etc must be located in the South-east
direction as it facilitates the smooth
functioning and alleviates accidents.

 Toilets in the factory must be constructed in
the South-east or North-west portion while
septic tank must be build in North-
west/North or South-east/South.
 Raw material or stacks must be dump in
South-west corner.
 Machines heavy or lighter should be located
in North or East sides but avoid centre,
North-east or North-west.
 Tube-well or bore well must be made
provision in North-east and this area should
be kept light and clean. Overhead tanks must
be placed in South-west.
Vastu Advise for Instutional buildings:
Vastu of an educational institution is
also necessary to make the ambience
peaceful, progress of students and to achieve
higher standards in terms of professionalism
and goodwill. Vastu lays down some basic
principles regarding institutes:
 All institutes should be built with East or
North-east entrance.
 Leave more space towards the East and
North-east while other parts like South,
West and South-west must be used for
construction.
 Classrooms should be made with entrance in
East and blackboard in West.
 Platform of teacher’s desk must be made
some feet high from the ground.
 Beams in the classroom must be constructed
carefully ensuring that no student sit under
the beam.
 Staff room must be made in North-west.
 Toilets should also be built up in the North-
west direction.
 Pantry or canteen in the institute should be
made in South-east corner.
 Owner or principal’s office must be
constructed in South-west or South direction
only so that she/he can sit facing North.

 Meeting rooms must be situated in North
with east facing door.
 Open play ground should be constructed in
the Eastern portion.
 Reception and cashier room must be located
in Eastern or Northern side.
 Library in the institute can be made in
Western portion.
Vastu Advise for Restranauts:
A well maintained and attractive
restaurant is what everyone seeks to enjoy
the meal of the day. But not every restaurant
prospers or attracts visitors to its premise
and this can be due to Vastu. A Vastu
compliant restaurant not only prospers in
attracting customers but can earn goodwill
which is an asset for every business.
 It is advisable to make sitting arrangement
of restaurant on first floor only.
 Main entrance of the restaurant should
always be from East or North.
 Reception in restaurant should be better
placed in Northern side.
 Storage room to store raw material, grains
etc must be ideally placed in South-west.
 Kitchen in the restaurant should always be
held in South-east and avoid other location
or direction for kitchen.
 Keep the location of restaurant well
recognized because Vastu defected locations
can affect the flourishing business of
restaurant.
 Keep the North-east of restaurant clean and
tidy and also incorporate water source such
water fountain here.
 Toilets should be located in North-west or
West of restaurant.
 Generators, invertors, geyser and other
electrical equipments should be placed in
South-east only.
 Always tint your restaurant wall with light
shades and avoid dark and complicated
colours.

 Shape of the plot in commercial place plays
a significant role in making business healthy
and wealthy, so Vastu suggests having
regular shape plot for restaurant.
 Restaurant should not be dark and dingy
instead it should be well ventilated and
lighted place.
 People sitting on the reception or owner
must face East or North direction while
receiving payment.
 Avoid beams, pillars, and arches in the
restaurant premise as brings lose
Vastu Advise for Banks:
Vastu in banks become important for
security and safety purpose; if it is
constructed according to the Vastu
principles then probably banks would never
face problem of robbery or theft. Another
significant thing that must be taken while
considering Vastu is placement of
employees and main head or manager of
bank; and placement or room for money
deposit.
 It is ideal to locate a bank in North or East
direction as this direction is ideal for
construction.
 Avoid any kind of obstruction in the main
door of bank and entrance is recommended
towards East or North-east or North.
 South-east corner of bank should be made
into Manager’s room and person sitting their
face towards North.
 Cash counters must be placed in North with
cashier facing East or North-east.
 Use wooden counters for cash.
 Employees of bank or staff must be seated in
West.
 The main cash room where all the cash is
accumulated must be placed in South or
South-west opening towards North.
 There should always be some water source
in North-east which is most auspicious.
 Colour play a significant role in making and
stabilizing wealth matters, so Yellow is
prominent colour.

 Things like files, papers and other junk stuff
must be kept at South-west.
 Stationary can be placed in North-west
corner.
 Cash deposit counters must be located in the
North direction of bank.
 Payment counters can placed western
portion.
 Keep stairs in West, South-west or South-
east.
Vastu Advise for Marriage Halls:
Marriage halls should have proper
section constructed in proper direction.
Vastu tells how marriage halls should
position every section at place:
 Stage in the marriage hall should be
positioned ideally in West so that Couple
sitting on it faces East.
 Entrance is ideal in East or North direction.
 Plot of the marriage hall should be in regular
shape for instance square or rectangle while
avoid round or oval shape banquet hall just
for the sake of decoration.
 Electrical equipments including dance floor,
music system and even transformer must be
located in South-east.
 Cooking arrangement must also be in South-
east only.
 Parking should be constructed in North-west
or South-east.
 Arrangement for food and snacks should be
directed towards North-west or North.
 Sitting arrangement for guests must be in
South-west or it could be in North.
 Mandap for marriage must be arranged in
North-east being the Ishaan corner and
sacred place while fire must be burn in
South-east corner.
 Toilets in marriage hall must be made in
North-west or West.
 Room of owner should preferably be
constructed in South-west.

Vastu Advise for Hospitals:
Hospital built with Vastu principles
makes people recover easily and quickly
without leaving them on risk of developing
any other complication.Construction of
operation theatre should be
done in Western portion of hospital.
 All the medical equipments must be placed
in South-east of hospital room.
 Patient’s room should be ventilated with
more windows from Eastern sides.
 Store room in the hospital should be placed
above the ground and all the equipments,
medications, apparatus etc should be
arranged in South-west or West
 ICU and recovery rooms should be built in
South-west portion of hospital for quick
recovery.
 Water arrangement should be done in the
North-east.
 Toilets must be built in North-west or West
and avoid any other location for toilet.
 Kitchen in hospital must be placed in South-
east.
 Doctor’s room should be constructed in
regular shape which is essential to doctor’s
prosperity and success.
Vastu Advise for Hostels:
Vastu for Hostel building is essential
in order to maintain peace, prosperity and
success. It is an infrastructure where

students hail from different geographical
area to study and if the structure is not made
according to Vastu norms then it may face
inevitable problems. There must be a
balance of energies via proper directions in
hostel building in order to make this place
comfort living for students. Some general
tips for hostel are as follows:
 Building of hostel must be in regular shape
such as rectangular or square and any
irregularity in shape on plot can be
inauspicious leading to loss of name and
goodwill.
 Stairs in hostel should be constructed in
Southern or Western portion.
 Administration, staff and warden must be
given South-western part of hostel to stay.
 Rooms of students must be constructed in
North-west.
 Toilets must be made in North-west.
 Canteen can be constructed in South-east
side.
 North-eastern zone should be left for lawn
or garden area.
 Bed in hostel room should be kept in such a
way that while sleeping students head face
South or East and feet towards North or
West.
 Avoid any beam in the hostel room and if
there is any then do not make students sit or
sleep under beam.
 Study table in the hostel room should be
kept facing North or East and must not fall
against the entrance.
 Bed in the hostel room should not be kept
just front of the entrance.
 Eastern side of hostel room should have
maximum windows to get morning sunlight
which is essential for students and their
studies.
Vastu Advice For The Industry :
Industries should be such in such a
manner that the production should increase
and so the movement of finished goods. If
the principles of the Vastu are followed, that

can lead to more production, increased sales,
no problem with labour and smooth
working.
 More open space should be provided in
the east and the North side than in the
West and South side.
 The sloping of the floors should be
towards East, North and Northeast sides
and never towards South, West.
 Thicker walls should be constructed in
the South and West Side of the building
and the thinner walls should be in the
North and east sides.
 The staircase should be in the Southwest
side.
 The underground water tank should be in
Northeast side.
 The overhead water tank should be in the
Southwest corner.
 Toilets must be placed in Northwest or
Western corners but should never be
constructed in the Northeast and
Southwest corners.
 Administrative office and other office
blocks can be constructed in North, East.
 Staff quarters, Outhouse should be built
in the Northwest corner.
 Basement should be constructed in the
east, North or Northeast corner of the
proposed building.

 Heavy machinery should be placed in the
Southwest, West & South zones.
 Northeast and centers of the building
should be avoided for placing anything
heavy.
 The heat zone or the burners, boilers,
ovens, generators, furnace transformers,.
 No garbage should be dumped in the
Northeast corner of the building or at the
site, north or the east corner should
always be kept free and clean.
 In R.C.C. framed structure, the number
of columns or the beams should be even
and not odd.
 The beam should never run above the
machines & the workers.
 The finished goods should be stored in
the Northwest corner of the area.
 A pooja room or a temple should be in
the northeast corner and should be kept
neat and clean.
 chimneys should be in the Southeast
corner
Vastu Advice for Parking:
Parking area is important now days
for keeping car and other vehicles at place
and safe from being theft. A proper parking
area must confirm to Vastu norms so that
vehicles parked here are safe. Vastu provide
rules regarding constructing proper parking
area:
 Parking should ideally be made in East or
North and if it is being constructed in West
then South-west must be empty while if it is
in South then South-west must be vacant.
 The slope of parking roof going downward
towards the North is considered well
according to Vastu.
 Vehicles should be parked towards facing
East or North.

 Cars should not be parked towards facing
South while parking is also prohibited
towards in North-east and South-west
corners.
 Entrance gate or door must be in the East or
the South.
 Ensure than height of the entrance gate of
parking area is less than compound wall.
 North-west is best to park vehicles.
CONCLUSION
In this, vastu concludes that vastu
compares the building with a human body.
The five elements which are co related to this
environment is said to be vastu and the
balancing part of all type of construction can
only be done by vastu. In this vastu concluded
that it is a natural science which can be seen
everywhere in really life.The vast is
applicable for all the aspects and the aspects
are mentioned in the above theory.Also the
vawstgu for construction building is also
discussed.
