IoT

What is IoT ?

Definition of IoT provided by IEEE

“The Internet of Things (IoT) is a framework in which all things have a representation and a presence in the
Internet. More specifically, the Internet of Things aims at offering new applications and services bridging
the physical and virtual worlds, in which Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications represents the
baseline communication that enables the interactions between Things and applications in the Cloud.”

Basically IoT is a network of 'smart' devices that connect and communicate via the Internet. The key
to IoT is the inter connectivity of devices, which collect and exchange information through
particularly embedded softwares and sensors.

 Things which are connected to a centralized network, normally, Internet. 

IoT is a giant network of connected things and people – all of which collect and share data
about the way they are used and about the environment around them.

Four basic building blocks of IoT

Sensor : Sensors are the front end of the IoT devices. Sensors are the Things in IoT. The entire
IoT system consists of set smart devices more precisely called as Things which interact with
each other to fulfill common goal. Things collect data from the environment, compute and
integrate seamlessly with the physical world. Things are nothing but the entities which are
available around us those have some sort of meaningful data that can be transferred via
internet.
 Processor : The main aim of this block is to focus on acquiring physical signals from the things

and converting them into meaningful digital signals. Processors are easily controllable by
applications and their one more important job is to securing data. They perform encryption
and decryption of data. It also includes signal conditioning, analog-to-digital conversion,
scaling, and interpretation.

Gateway architecture : Main task of gateways is to route the processed data and transfer it to
proper databases or network storage for proper utilization. In other words, gateway helps in
communication of the data. Communication and network connectivity are essentials for IoT
systems.

Applications : Applications are like the front-end of an IoT system. Applications do utilization
of all the data collected and provide interface to users to interact with that data. These
applications could be cloud based applications which are responsible for rendering data
collected.
