 THE RED ROOM

BACKGROUND
The Red Room - Krasnaya Komnata
(Красная комната) was one of the
Department X's espionage training
facilities and played a critical role in
Natalia Romanova's life. For decades,
the Red Room was active as a Cold
War program to train the deadliest
female spies in the world. It was
created due to the success of their
previous sleeper agent and assassin
the Winter Soldier. They recruited 28
little orphan girls to make them
undetectable deep-cover agents to
infiltrate China and the West. The core
methodology was designed by
Professor Grigor Pchelintsov, a leader
in the field of psychotechnics, and
allowed for imprinting people with
almost completely fabricated
memories. They were made to believe
that they were trained in ballet in the
Bolshoi Theatre. During her training,
Romanova was contacted by the
Enchantress, who manipulated her
simply for the sake of it suggesting that
Romanova may be freed only to
prevent her from escaping - however,
Romanova's effort attracted attention of
the program's organizers, who would
had otherwise "discard" Romanova.
Natasha was placed with a handler
Ivan Petrovitch. Furthermore, the girls
all received a special treatment
designed by Dr. Lyudmila Kudrin, a
biochemist. The Kudrin treatment could
make women stay young for many
decades, as well as superhumanly
healthy and resilient.
Niko Constantin was the only male
trainee of the Red Room's male
equivalent dubbed "Wolf Spider", Niko
Constantin proved to be an effective
killer, but impossible to handle or
control, leading to the program to be
declared a failure. Years later, he was
found to be imprisoned in a Russian
gulag, leading a gang of convicts
dubbed the Wolf Spiders, and holding a
grudge against James "Bucky" Barnes,
one of the trainers for the Wolf Spider
program. The K.G.B. continued the
Red Room still operated in the late
1970s. The new Black Widow program
was making a reality out of the
disinformation, helping to hide what the
real project had been. This Red Room
program successfully trained their
agent, Yelena Belova, though she soon
left their service.

 Natasha, weary of espionage and
adventure, retired to Arizona but was
targeted, as were the other Black
Widow subjects of the Red Room, by
the North Institute on behalf of the
corporation Gynacon. Natasha’s
investigations led her back to Russia,
where she was appalled to learn the
previously unimagined extent of her
past manipulation, and she discovered
the Widows were being hunted
because Gynacon, having purchased
Russian biotechnology from Red
Room’s successor agency 2R, wanted
all prior users of the technology dead.
After killing Gynacon CEO Ian
McMasters, she clashed with
operatives of multiple governments to
help Sally Anne Carter, a teenage girl
Natasha had befriended in her
investigations, whom she then
attempted to rescue by herself and who
Yelena Belova and Matt Murdock then
had to rescue Natasha and help her,
Sally Anne and a group of captured
girls and women get to safety.
The Red Room was revealed to
have been started by the long-lived
Mutant; Romulus who had ties to
Wolverine. The Red Room bought the
mutant, Super-Soldier Omega Red's
freedom with the hopes of using him to
their own ends. Wolverine, Colossus,
and Nightcrawler encountered him after
he freed himself from his master,
however, and they engaged in combat.
Omega Red was largely impervious to
Wolverine's claws; the Red Room had
been experimenting on his body in an
effort to enhance his healing factor.
After Nightcrawler intervened and
knocked Omega Red unconscious, he
was returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.
The Red Room was the site of
mass killings of K.G.B recruits.
Surveillance video revealed that the
killings were carried out by the Dark
Ocean Society lead by a new Ronin.
However, before their investigation was
complete, the investigating heroes
were attacked by the Supreme Soviets
and forced to split up. Hawkeye and
Black Widow traveled to Sapporo,
Japan, the base of operations of the
Dark Ocean Society, while Mockingbird
and Dominic Fortune headed to the tip
of the Kamchatka Peninsula following
mass Russian troop movements. The
group reunited on the disputed Kuril
Islands and discovered that the identity
of the new Ronin is Alexi Shostakov,
the original Red Guardian and Black
Widow's ex-husband. Shostakov
revealed he intended to force a war

between Russia and Japan that will
restore Russia's former glory. A battle
ensues as the heroes take on a
combination of the Dark Ocean Society
and the Supreme Soviets. During the
battle Hawkeye receives a critical blow
to the head, Widow however manages
to take down Shostakov with the help
of Fantasma.
Nadia Pym is the daughter of Hank
Pym and his first wife, Maria Trovaya,
who was kidnapped during her
honeymoon and subsequently killed by
foreign agents. Nadia was raised in the
Red Room in Russia, where she was
being trained to become a Red Room
agent herself. When Nadia started to
read, she showed great aptitude for
science, so her handlers, believing her
skills to be genetic, informed her of her
famous heritage and began
encouraging her to emphasize her
studies more. Learning of her
parentage only increased Nadia's drive
to escape the Red Room, and she was
eventually able to obtain a black-
market Pym Particle sample, which she
studied enough to master its size-
changing properties and used to
escape the facility.

Biochemical Marker: The one time use
of this marker creates a biochemical
pheromone barrier that makes any
Black Widow agent confronted with it
compliant and unwilling to attack those
marked chemically. The only way to
bypass this marker is for the agent to
know about the marker and then they
must make a Red Psyche Feat to
overcome the compulsion not to attack.

Protein bath: This chemically created
protein slime bath stabilizes Kudrin's
nervous system and allows for her
continued prolonged existence at her
advanced age.

ROLE PLAYING NOTES
Kurdin has little issue with the things
that she took part of in her past as a
scientist for the Red Room. She talks to
the Widows as though they were her
daughters and relies on her
biochemical marker to keep her safe
from their anger and violence.
HISTORY
Dr. Lyudmila Kudrin was a member of
the Red Room. She was the head
scientist responsible for developing the
variant of the Super-Soldier Serum that
keeps Black Widow young and in their
prime.
DEPARTMENT X
Department X was a covert Soviet
agency that was created to train and
produce Super-Soldiers to battle the
west for the KGB. One of their first
projects was the "Winter Soldier".
General Vasily Karpov and his crew of
a Russian patrol submarine found
Bucky's cold-preserved body, missing
one arm. Bucky was revived in Moscow
but suffered brain damage with
amnesia as a result of the explosion.
Scientists attached a bionic arm,
upgrading it as technology improved.
He was sent on covert wetwork
missions and became increasingly
ruthless and efficient as he killed in the
name of the state. The Winter Soldier
was kept in a cryogenic stasis when not
on missions. In 1968, Department X
sent the Winter Soldier to kill Professor
Zhang Chin, whom he had met over 20
years earlier. He was thwarted by an
intangible being called the Man with no
Face, though he was able to escape.
On assignment in the 1970s, he
suffered a breakdown and went
missing for days after assassinating his
target. The Winter Soldier also aided in
Wolverine's escape from the Weapon X
laboratory and later murdered Itsu,
Wolverine's wife, seemingly killing their
unborn son Daken, who survived the
attack after being cut from his mother's
womb.
Department X was also
responsible for creating the Red Room
and training facility to create the perfect
assassin. The Black Widow Ops
Program initially recruited 28 little
orphan girls to make them undetectable
deep-cover agents to infiltrate China
and the West. The Winter Soldier was
brought in to assist in the training of
one of the Red Room’s Black Widows –
including Natalia Romanova. The
assignment consisted of hand-to-hand
combat training, English language
instruction, and most likely lessons in
American mannerisms – all routine
training that Department X had
conducted numerous times. They also
created the Wolf Spider Ops Program,
a male equivalent, but this project was
stopped and was considered a failure.

K.G.B.
The KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy
Bezopasnosti) was the primary security
agency of the Soviet Union. It was
established in 1954 and abolished at its
fall in December 1991. It was said that
is the world's most effective
information-gathering organization. It
was responsible for creating various
projects including the Red Room.

Infinity Formula: Ordinarily the Infinity
Formula that Nick Fury used kept him
in the prime of his life and slowed his
aging down (1 year for every 5 he
actually aged), the transfusion that the
Winter Soldier underwent from Nick
Fury granted him super soldier like
qualities as well. Maybe there was
something that the soviets had
previously used on him or some aspect
to the formula that worked for him that
hadn't worked for Fury, regardless the
formula had the following effects on
him:
• Healing factor: Bucky recovers health
as though his Endurance was +1
C/S. He can't re-grow lost body parts,
nor does it resurrect him after death.
• Recovery: RM (30)
• Resistance to Toxins and Disease:
Due to the formula Bucky is highly
resistant to the build-up of fatigue
Poisons in his tissues as well as to
conventional disease. He can be
considered to have AM (50)
Endurance for purposes of resisting
the effects of fatigue and exhaustion,
as well as Toxins and Disease.
• Hyper-Running: Bucky has PR (4)
speed, allowing him to run at up to

ROLE PLAYING NOTES
Ever since his youth, Bucky willingly in
his heart wanted to save the lives of
innocent people and defend his
country, though he remembers many
terrible things he had done when he
first became the Winter Soldier. As a
brainwashed assassin, he showed no
regretful thoughts or feelings when he
committed assassinations. Recently,
Bucky's mind was restored, and he
regained his humanity. Bucky began to
risk his life to protect the weak and led
a team called the Thunderbolts, always
using the determination of his character
to support the good of mankind. He
also has slight sense of humor.
HISTORY
A tough kid who spent his whole life on
Army bases, James Buchanan "Bucky"
Barnes proved himself strong enough
to take on the role of Captain America's
sidekick during World War II. The pair
fought the Axis powers throughout the
Big One until Bucky perished in a
scheme orchestrated by the original
Baron Zemo. For years, Captain
America believed his partner dead, but
the Russians came upon Barnes' body
in the ocean and turned the amnesiac
into the perfect killing machine. Upon
proving difficult to control, the Russians
decided to put him in cryo-freeze
between missions, giving birth to the
legendary Winter Soldier. Eventually
Captain America came into contact with
this Winter Soldier, recognized his
partner, and used a cracked Cosmic
Cube to return his friend's memories.
Since then, Bucky has dedicated
himself to making up for the atrocities
he committed as the Winter Soldier. He
even took up the mantle of Captain
America for a time and also stepped in
for Nick Fury as "the man on the wall,"
keeping an eye out for threats to
Earth's existence.
Bucky's mother died early in his
life, but he grew up on Army bases with
his dad and sister Rebecca, learning
the ins and outs of this lifestyle at an
early age. After his father died in a
training accident, Bucky spent his days
at Camp Lehigh in Virginia getting into
trouble but also proving himself as a
young man with great potential. A fan
of Captain America's exploits, Bucky
jumped at the chance to train overseas
with an S.A.S. unit before the U.S.
officially entered the war and also took
fighting lessons from the people who
trained the Sentinel of Liberty. He was
considered to be a perfect partner for
Captain America, not only to get
America's youth invested in the fight,
but also to take care of dirty dealings
that might not make the newsreel
footage. Apparently blown up by Baron
Zemo, Bucky became a brainwashed
weapon of the Russians until Captain
America restored his memories with a
Cosmic Cube. Since then, he has
focused on making up for all the pain
he caused as the Winter Soldier.
A natural fighter from his earliest
days, the Army started training Bucky
with the same people who turn Captain
America into a one-man army. Those
skills are put to great use when Bucky
fights in World War II. After the
Russians find him, they build a robotic
arm to replace the one he lost when the
plane exploded and use mental
implants to enhance his lethal abilities.
Bucky owes his youthful appearance to
repeated cryo-freezes orchestrated by
the Russians. He possesses no super
powers and never received a form of
the Super Soldier Serum as many
assume, but continues to operate at
peak human ability. Winter Soldier also
boasts a master knowledge of weapons
and firearms. He has used a variety of
guns and knives as well as Captain
America's shield and even alien
weaponry.
While fighting alongside Captain
America during World War II, Bucky
made plenty of enemies ranging from
Hitler and the other Axis powers to the
Red Skull and Master Man. Baron
Heinrich Zemo launched the plane-
bomb that Bucky tried to disarm and
sent him into the icy ocean below at the
cost of his left arm. Russian Generals
Vasily Karpov and Aleksander Lukin
turned Barnes into the Winter Soldier.
Later, Lukin winds up playing host to
Bucky's long-time nemesis the Red
Skull, who utilizes Crossbones, Sin,
Doctor Faustus, Arnim Zola, and more
of Captain America's enemies to
continue tormenting anyone in the
shield-slinger's uniform, including
Bucky. Over the years, Bucky takes on
a few pretenders to Cap's legacy,
including William Burnside, otherwise
known as the 1950s Captain America,
as well as the Kobik-created Hydra
Captain America who kills Black
Widow.
Bucky and Steve Rogers become
like brothers after they start fighting
their way through the Axis powers. He
also befriends and earns the respect of
other soldiers, like Nick Fury and the
Howling Commandos, as well as Super
Heroes Namor, the Human Torch, and
Toro. He also joins up with the Invaders
and the Young Allies.
While under control of the
Russians, Barnes meets and begins
falling in love with Natasha Romanoff,
who goes onto become the Black
Widow. He reunites with her after
regaining his senses in the modern era.
She assists him as the Winter Solider
and Captain America alongside Falcon

and Sharon Carter, otherwise known as
Agent 13. Barnes starts working with
Nick Fury again upon recovering his
memories, but also joins Super Hero
teams like the Avengers, the New
Avengers, and the Thunderbolts. He
also teams up with Daisy Johnson for a
time to defend Earth from
extraterrestrial threats. His relationship
with Clint Barton remains complicated
as they both idolize the same man and
love the same woman.
In 1941, Bucky stumbled upon
Cap's secret identity and instantly
became his sidekick. The government
used that story to tell the world about
his history, when in reality James
Buchanan Barnes led a tough life living
on Army bases, even after his dad died
in an accident. A natural fighter, the
higher-ups began grooming him to be a
different kind of super solider, first by
sending him to train with the S.A.S. and
then assigning him to partner with
Captain America. Eventually, the two
did begin working together. First, they
defended the States from Axis terrorists
before joining the fight overseas. While
Captain America stood in the spotlight,
Bucky used his smaller stature and
more lethal skills to take care of some
of the dirtier jobs behind the scenes.
Along the way, Bucky and Steve
became close confidants and brothers-
in-arms. They would go on to join
forces with the Howling Commandos
and the Invaders in their efforts to stop
the war. Towards the end of the war,
Baron Heinrich Zemo captured Captain
America and Bucky. After torturing the
young man in front of his senior
partner, Zemo set up the duo to die
before launching an experimental
drone plane rigged with a bomb.
Having broken free, the heroes drove
off after the weapon and leaped into
action. Rogers realized they didn't have
time to stop the bomb and jumped
away, but Bucky got stuck. The
ensuing explosion sent Captain
America into the icy depths where he
would remain untouched until Namor
accidentally rattled him free. Rogers
assumed Bucky died in the incident
and believed this for years. However,
Bucky also managed to free himself
just before the explosion. He lost his
left arm in the process, but also landed,
still alive, in the freezing waters. Unlike
his partner, Barnes was fished out by
General Vasily Karpov. After slowly
bringing him back to life, the Russians
came to realize that he had suffered a
great deal of brain damage. He had no
memories or true personality, just the
reflex memories of how to fight.
The Russians fitted him with a
robotic arm and utilized a program of
mind implants and manipulation that
turned him into the perfect, emotionless
killer dubbed the Winter Soldier. Once
they finished his programming, the
Russians used him to train and test
their Super Soldiers created in the Red
Room for Department X. Once he
started showing cracks in his
programming, they decided to keep him
in cryo-sleep between missions.
Between his relationship with Natasha
Romanoff, which began with him as her
trainer, and trips to the United States,
the Winter Soldier started disobeying
his orders. They placed him in cryo-
freeze just before the Soviet Union fell
apart, leaving him in storage until
Karpov's second Aleksander Lukin
thawed him out in the modern era to kill
the Red Skull, steal his cobbled-
together Cosmic Cube and use
massive destruction to kickstart the
reality-warping device. During these
exploits, which included the Winter
Soldier blowing up part of downtown
Philadelphia, Captain America, Nick
Fury, Falcon, and Sharon Carter began
to understand that this murderer was
actually Bucky Barnes. The heroes
stopped this mission, which led to a
battle between former partners. Barnes
claimed not to remember Captain

America, but after Rogers got his
hands on the Cube, he used it to make
Bucky remember his entire life, the
good and the bad.
Almost immediately, Barnes began
working for Nick Fury, who guided him
to specific threats as the Super Heroes
raced towards Civil War. During the
event, Bucky kept to the shadows, still
going on ops for Fury, but also realizing
that this kind of mess diverted attention
from where it truly should be. Then, just
as Cap and his anti-registration side
seemed to gain the upper hand,
Rogers surrendered. Barnes was
nearby not long after Rogers was
marched to the courthouse for his trial.
Captain America never made it inside
as Red Skull's plan took effect.
Crossbones sniped him from the sky
and a Dr. Faustus-controlled Sharon
Carter shot him up close. Bucky and
Falcon took out Crossbones, but with
his brother gone and still considered a
public menace, Bucky found himself
mourning alone. He continued his
mission to stop Lukin, eventually
discovering that the Red Skull had
somehow taken up residence in the
villain's mind. Making matters worse,
Lukin revealed that part of the Winter
Soldier programming included safe
words that could knock him out.
Faustus tried working his brain-bending
mad science on Bucky, but it didn't
work, and Agent 13 threw him out of a
plane.
Not trusting how Tony Stark, then
head of S.H.I.E.L.D., would honor
Steve's memory, Barnes broke into the
Helicarrier to steal Cap's shield. He
thought about slinging it himself, but
didn't take to the idea right away until
he read a letter from Steve that
requested he fill the position. Bucky
made two things clear before taking up
the mantle, though: he wanted
S.H.I.E.L.D. to get the Winter Soldier
programming out of his head, and also
to be his own hero, answering to no
one.
Bucky then donned a new costume
to become Captain America. It took
some time for him to fully understand
what Steve did in that uniform beyond
beating up bad guys and what it meant
to the people who saw him. During his
time as Cap, he started working with
the New Avengers and also joined
forces with Namor to reclaim Jim
Hammond's body and give their fellow
Invader a proper hero's burial. He also
worked with Falcon, Black Widow, and
Sharon Carter to finally put an end to
the Red Skull's machinations. As those absentia and found him guilty of crimes at the same time that Black Widow

which included taking out the 1950s
Cap William Burnside, who had been
driven mad and started leading the
white power group known as the
Watchdogs. After killing the impostor,
Bucky started acting like he had
something of a death wish, which
concerned Falcon and Rogers. Baron
Helmut Zemo took advantage of all this
and put a plan into motion utilizing his
old crony Fixer as well as his father's
ally Iron Hand Hauptmann and a new
Beetle to get Bucky exactly where he
wanted him. Zemo demanded that
Barnes earn his status as a hero
instead of riding Cap's coattails, so he
released proof of his past as the Winter
Soldier to the media. After getting away
from Zemo, Bucky turned himself in
and faced his charges with Steve's old
friend, Bernie Rosenthal, representing
him. During the trial, Sin and Master
Man captured Falcon and Black
Widow. She demanded that Bucky
appear at the Statue of Liberty or else
she'd blow it up along with his friends.
Though advised not to, Bucky rushed
into save his friends before turning
himself back in. The judge allowed
Barnes to switch his plea to guilty but
commuted the 20-year sentence to
time served in an effort to keep James
out of jail.
However, the Russians had other
plans and extradited Bucky to a
Siberian jail, having tried him in

severely injured Bucky actually died,
both to push Rogers back into the role
of Captain America and also allow
Barnes to restart his life.
In treating him, they injected him
with Fury's last vial of Infinity Formula.
Once up on his feet again, Bucky
immediately told Steve what they'd
done, noting that his work needed to be
done in the shadows. He and Natasha
started their new mission. While trying
to track down the three U.S.-stationed
sleeper agents, they ran into Lucia Von
Bardas, the Crimson Ghost, and Doctor
Doom. The last sleeper, Leo, managed
to brainwash Black Widow into working
for him, but the Winter Soldier teamed
with Hawkeye, Captain America, and
Wolverine to finally take him down and
get her help from S.H.I.E.L.D.
Ultimately, her memories of him were
erased. Bucky continued fighting the
good fight as the Winter Soldier, but
soon answered Fury's call to
investigate the murder of the Watcher.
Though he first began helping out
alongside Gamora and Moon Knight,
Barnes attacked Fury and declared
there should be no more secrets. The
old war horse then explained that he'd
spent decades as "the man on the
wall," doing whatever it took to keep
Earth safe. Fury became the new
Watcher and passed his secret
defender responsibilities on to Bucky.
With a new job description, Barnes
recruited Daisy Johnson to help him.
The pair got into pretty deep trouble on
a mission during which Bucky fell in
love, they encountered an alternate
universe, and Loki pulled more strings
than a puppeteer. During that time,
Rogers returned to his role as Captain
America, lost his Super Soldier Serum-
granted youth, passed the mantle of
Captain America on to Sam Wilson,
and re-joined S.H.I.E.L.D. Rogers didn't
know that Maria Hill had started a
program called Pleasant Hill that used
a sentient Cosmic Cube called Kobik to
rewrite the minds of Super Villains and
give them new lives. So, he was pretty
confused when the Winter Soldier
started attacking S.H.I.E.L.D. outposts.
Rogers was even more surprised when
Bucky met up with him and said that
Hill hadn't destroyed the Cube
fragments like she originally claimed.
Hill gave Rogers a tour and
everything seemed ship-shape, but
then Baron Zemo broke out alongside
Fixer, Moonstone, and others before
causing a full-scale jail break. Winter
Solder worked with Sam Wilson to find
Kobik after she restored Steve to his
proper age and implanted him with
Hydra memories created by the Red
Skull.
After the fracas, Bucky agreed to
help Kobik, who also wanted to bring
her four friends along: Fixer,
Moonstone, Atlas, and Mach-X.
Together they formed the new
Thunderbolts and continued Barnes'
work of watching out for high-level
threats. Bucky didn't learn that Kobik
had re-written Steve Rogers' mind until
it was too late, and Rogers took control
of the country with his Secret Hydra
Empire. As the faux Rogers' operation
began, Baron Zemo attempted to kill
Bucky the same way his father did, but
the Winter Soldier escaped and
splashed into the water. Namor's
people found him, and he took on the
disguise of a royal adviser, which gave
the two old comrades time to make
their own play. Just as Hydra Cap
leveled up in power, Barnes worked out
a plan with Sam Wilson and Scott Lang
to launch the last remaining piece of
Kobik into Rogers. Jumping into the
newly reformed Cube, Bucky saved
Kobik as well as his old friend and
escaped with them both. While Barnes
was underwater, Hydra Cap murdered
Black Widow in front of the world.
When Kobik recreated everything, it
seemed like she and the murdered
Rick Jones had been brought back in
some form or another.
These days, Winter Soldier and
Hawkeye have teamed up to find out if
Natasha still walks the planet and, if so,
what she remembers of her old life.

HISTORY
Ivan Petrovich Bezukhov rescued the
young Natasha Romanoff when the
infant was thrown to him from a burning
building during World War II by her
mother. Ivan became the infant's father
figure and protector. While under Ivan's
protection, many adversaries attempted
to attack her. Baron von Strucker
abducted Natasha and presented her
to the Hand in Madripoor. There, she
was to become their Master Assassin
until Captain America, Logan, and Ivan
saved her. Ivan took the young girl to
the Soviet government to join the
U.S.S.R.'s "Black Widow Ops"
program. She was taken along with
other 28 young female orphans, where
she is trained in combat and espionage
at the covert "Red Room" facility.
There, she is bio-technologically and
psycho-technologically enhanced. She
never really trained in ballet in the
Bolshoi Theatre, having instead
artificial memories. During her training,
Romanova was contacted by the
Enchantress, who manipulated her
simply for the sake of it suggesting that
Romanova may be freed only to
prevent her from escaping - however,
Romanova's effort attracted attention of
the program's organizers, who would
had otherwise "discard" Romanova.
When she was ready she Ivan was
placed as her handler. Ivan received
the same age retarding Serum as
Natalia in 1956. It was provided by
Winter Soldier to save a mortally
wounded Ivan, in exchange for both

Ivan and Natalia's loyalty. Ivan wanted
to refuse but Natalia accepted for them
both as Ivan passed out.
Much later when the Black Widow
moved to New York City, Ivan
continued to be her protector and
chauffeur. When the Widow moved to
San Francisco with Daredevil,
Petrovich also moved into their
mansion. He continued to travel and
accompany the Widow, moving back to
New York City with her. He travelled
with her to Los Angeles where he
befriended her teammates the
Champions. It was while with the
Champions that he was confronted by
his son Yuri, whom he had believed
dead. Yuri had become the new
Crimson Dynamo and captured first the
Black Widow and then the rest of the
Champions. Ivan helped Widow in her
battle against Snapdragon.
Ivan helped the the Black Widow
and the Avengers by informing them of
a mysterious energy pulse detected in
the Canadian Northwest Territories.
She assembled the Avengers, who
were attempting in vain to break the
mysterious trans-temporal door they
discovered in the Avengers Mansion,
and jet north to investigate. They
discovered a two mile diameter crater
and descend into its depths only to find
the Red Skull and his prisoner Ivan
Bezukhov. However with the help of the
Avengers Red Skull is defeated and
Ivan was rescued. Ivan subsequently
disappeared for years after realizing
that the Widow would never reciprocate
his long unexpressed romantic feelings
for her, seeing him purely as a father
figure. He eventually resurfaced having
gone insane and had himself
transformed into a cyborg monster.
Black Widow was forced to kill him in
order to stop him unleashing nuclear
devastation on the world.

A wealthy munitions dealer terrified of
nuclear war, Dran organized the

new energy source to protect himself,

him to use its power for himself, Dran
hired mercenary Danny French to steal
the globe. French succeeded, assisted

warriors — Black Lotus, "Deadshot"
Darrance, Iron Maiden, Laralie (later
the Wrangler), N'Kama, and
Snapdragon — who captured the
Widow. They replaced her with an
imposter intended to murder Nick Fury
on live video, framing the real Widow
just before Dran's ship would blow up
the SHIELD Helicarrier. The Widow
escaped, defeated all attackers, and
contacted SHIELD in time. The Widow
imposter was subdued, and SHIELD
obliterated Dran's island base.
Surviving, Dran established a new
base in New Orleans, obtaining and
selling anyone or anything for a profit,
assisted by Golddigger (Angela
Golden), Kono Sanada, and many
others. He organized the kidnapping of
many runaways and sold them to
Baron and Baroness Zemo. The
vigilante Americop followed the missing
children's trail to Dran's mansion.
Diamondback (Rachel Leighton) was
brought there while confirming the
death of Snapdragon, and Captain
America followed Diamondback. Dran's
agents captured all three, but
Diamondback summoned the
Avengers, and Dran's helicopter was
shot down as he fled. He was
apprehended by the Widow and sent
back to prison.

ROLE-PLAYING NOTES
In the beginning, Clarke was
primarily bent on revenge
against the institutions he felt
betrayed by. Later in his
career, he utlilized his
equipment and abilities for self-
gain, looking out for himself.
HISTORY
Stuart Clarke was the
scientifically brilliant but
economically naïve founder of
Los Angeles' Clarke Futuristics.
He hoped to lead America into
the future via his own high-tech
company. After Williams
Innovations collapsed following
Simon Williams' embezzlement
scandal, Clarke Futuristics
became the No. 2 company for
government contracted high
tech, behind Stark Industries.
Clarke designed an
exoskeleton, intending to
revolutionize modern police
work, but Stark's company
began a similar project and
took the government contracts.
Newer and larger corporations,
like Roxxon, entered the field
and joined Stark in
overshadowing Clarke; even
when he was first with a
product, his smaller company
couldn't supply it as
economically or rapidly. When
his lawyer, Amos Crawley,
recommended selling Clarke
Futuristics while he could still
turn a healthy profit, Clarke
stubbornly refused to give up.
In the midst of an economic recession
two years later, Clarke, always seeing
himself the victim, blamed his failing
company on the government's
inefficient policies. When Crawley
recommended he declare bankruptcy,
Clarke fired him and decided to use his
exoskeleton prototype to take what he
needed to revive Stark Futuristics from
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation-
protected banks; Clarke perceived this
as sparing "real people': while the
bank's losses would be covered by the
very government he blamed for his
problems.
Robbing LA's National Bank,
Clarke was confronted by the city's
Champions. Holding his own initially,
Clarke unwittingly injured their friend
Ivan Petrovitch Bezukhov and then fled
the irate heroes after hurling a car to
explode against Hercules. While Clarke
escaped in civilian garb and considered
dismantling the armor and abandoning
his criminal plans, his exploits made
the news, where he was dubbed
Rampage. Recognizing Clarke's
exoskeleton, Crawley informed the
police, who surrounded Clarke
Futuristics. Unintentionally severely
injuring two officers while attempting to
flee, Rampage soon ran out of fuel and
was assaulted by a legion of
vengeance-seeking police. When the
Champions arrived and joined the fight,
Clarke's suit's power began to fade,
and as he faced defeat, he blew up his
Jet Pack. Iceman protected his
Champions teammates and saved
Clarke's life with an ice shield.
Meanwhile, as Clarke had never
altered his power of attorney status for
Clarke Futuristics, Crawley sold the

company, paid off Clarke's
creditors, and kept the profit.
The recovering Clarke was
contacted by Ivan's son, Yuri
Ivanich Bezukhov (aka Yuri
Petrovich, the Outcast, and
Crimson Dynamo), who
arranged to free him in
exchange for Rampage's
alliance. The Angel sent his
lawyer, Emerson Bale, to
defend Clarke, who mockingly
refused before being broken
out by Yuri's agents Darkstar
and Griffin (Johnny Horton).
Rampage subsequently
confronted the Champions in
their tower, intending to deliver
a recorded message from the
Outcast, but Yuri had
sabotaged Rampage's armor,
and it exploded, badly injuring
Clarke, while the Champions
escaped harm and rushed
Clarke to the hospital.
Diagnosed as crippled for life
and currently comatose, the
burned and bandaged Clarke
secretly revived and prepared a
gas (via the hospital
dispensary) that he used to
take mental control of a
sympathetic visiting Iceman
and escape, and then placed
Iceman under his long-term
control in a rebuilt or spare set
of Rampage armor. Clarke
used Iceman/Rampage to
assault the Angel (Warren
Worthington) and Champions
Tower (now abandoned since
the team's break-up), using the
Angel's fear of harming Iceman to
prevent his interference in plans to gain
vengeance on all the Champions.
Ultimately, the Angel and Spider-Man
(Peter Parker) destroyed the Rampage
armor and freed Iceman from Clarke's
control, and Clarke was imprisoned,
Eventually recovering full mobility,
Clarke was released from prison but
was homeless. Nonetheless, he
designed a device that could control
one of his original Rampage
exoskeletons still stored in his former
company, now Pactech. As the device
would only work on an active costume,
Clarke tried it every time he walked
past. The company had designed six
replicas of Clarke's exoskeleton, and
when one of the technicians heard a
clicking sound in the original, they
turned it on for testing, granting Clarke
control. Clarke took it and the other
replicas, which he delivered to 6
homeless friends, including August,
Paco, and Ronnie. As the Recession
Raiders, they joined Rampage in
assaulting Pactech but were soon
confronted by Wonder Man (Simon
Williams) and the Beast (Hank McCoy).
The Beast was struck from behind and
injured, and Wonder Man rushed him to
the hospital. Clarke regrouped his
Raiders in Pactech and revealed his
mad plans for economic justice,
including selling technology on the
international black market, driving out
foreign investors, and leading
Americans to retake their economic
destiny. Some Raiders were a little
uncertain of Clarke's plan, but, feeling
they were in this deep, they continued
following him. When they were
assaulted by Wonder Man, who swiftly
took down four Raiders, August and
Ronnie decided to escape with the
suits rather than risk a beating from
Wonder Man. The hero defeated
Rampage, and he and the remaining
Raiders were arrested.
Learning of Clarke, crimelord Lotus
Newmark arranged his bail, defense,
and employment. Clarke then adapted
his Rampage technology tor me Armed
Response exoskeletons used by Lotus'
agents in her protection racket. When
the Crazy Eight, a group of novice
heroes empowered by Williams' ionic
energies, interfered with Lotus' Armed
Response plot, Clarke designed ion-
dampeners to neutralize ionic powers,
and Lotus sent him and
Splice to eliminate
the Crazy Eight. Joined by Lotus' other
agent, Splice, Rampage assaulted the
Crazy Eight, whom he considered cap-
turing and studying to design new
technology based on their energies.
Ultimately Wonder Man rescued the
Eight and, after seeing Splice had
nearly killed Williams' then-girlfriend
Alex Flores, he furiously channeled so
much ionic energy that Clarke's ion-
dampeners were overwhelmed;
Rampage and Splice were defeated
and captured.
Following his release, Clarke
received the abandoned War Machine
armor from his associate, mercenary
Parnell Jacobs. Clarke and Jacobs took
jobs at Baintronics, working for Sunset
Bain, and Clarke rebuilt and modified
the War Machine armor and designed a
new weapons system for Bain. War
Machine (Jacobs) subsequently battled
Iron Man (Tony Stark) for Bain, but
when they fought on Baintronics
property, Bain activated Clarke's
weapons system, which attacked both
combatants. After Jacob's old war
buddy Jim Rhodes arrived and called in
an old debt with Jacobs to get him to
leave, Iron Man destroyed the other
weapons, and Bain fired Clarke.
Clarke later was sent to the Raft
prison and escaped during the mass
prison breakout arranged by Electro.
He subsequently altered his
appearance, presumably via plastic
surgery, worked upgrading super-
villains'

weapons, and dated Texas
photojournalist Tatiana Ariocha. Clarke
eventually encountered the Punisher
(Frank Castle) who was investigating
villains' weapons upgrades. Though
Clarke's robots overpowered the
Punisher, Clarke took umbrage to
Castle's comparing him to Tony Stark
and further blamed Stark for the
breakouts and weapons upgrades.
Clarke gave Castle a Starktech-
tracking device, which allowed the
Punisher to save Spider-Man (Peter
Parker) from an attack, as well as
technology and information that
allowed Captain America's "Secret
Avengers" to break into the Baxter
Building to gain access to the Negative
Zone's prison 42. In return, Castle gave
Clarke advanced warning when
SHIELD was coming for him, and he
escaped, after which he recovered a
badly beaten Punisher and brought him
to a SHIELD armory where he cared for
him for 4 days until Castle awakened,
while Clarke strip-mined its technology.
After they escaped another SHIELD
capture attempt, Clarke learned
Tatiana was in trouble with the new
Hate-Monger and National Force white
supremacists, and he convinced Castle
to investigate. Castle infiltrated the
Force, using a high-tech Captain
America-inspired costume built by
Clarke from Castle's designs, but other
agents abducted Tatiana from Clarke's
side, and the terrified Clarke fled for his
life. While Clarke contacted former
SHIELD agent G.W. Bridge for aid,
Castle fell under control of the Hate-
Monger's H-Ray, which filled him with
hatred, and he was unable to stop
himself from killing Tatiana under the
Hate-Monger's orders Clarke and
Bridge soon assaulted the Force's
base, and the Punisher joined them in
destroying the H-Ray, killing the Hate-
Monger, and breaking up the Force.
Clarke was devastated to find Tatiana's
body, and he vowed to slay whoever
killed her; he started with the policeman
whose information led the Force to
Tatiana, while Castle kept silent about
his own responsibility.
Back in New York, Clarke
designed a synthetic Venom-like
costume to help the Punisher slay
Mung of the Hulk's Warbound. Parnell
Jacobs and Sunset Bain later tried to
use Clarke to get the War Machine
remnants from each other. Clarke
apparently slew Jacobs, while Bain
seduced Clarke, then dropped him after
learning the armor's location; but
Clarke then sent the Punisher to kill
Bain. One of the Recession Raiders
attended the Hood's meeting to gather
a super-villain mob army.
During the Secret Invasion
someone sent him a DVD of Frank
killing his girlfriend, under the Hate-
Monger's influence. Afterwards, Stuart
decided to kill him. During the fight, he
received serious injuries to his face,
giving him scars like Jigsaw.
He worked with the original
Jigsaw, and was killed by him when he
tried to murder Henry Russo, Jigsaw's
son. Clarke later returned to life
through unknown means and attended
a meeting of various villains organized
by the Wizard to discuss what to do
about Doctor Doom who had
unexpectedly decided to turn heroic
and become the new Iron Man. As the
Hood brought up the idea of forming a
gang of villains to take Doom out,
Doom suddenly appeared and took
down all of the villains present.
Clarke later joined the newest
incarnation of Hood's Gang and was
among those in the gang who
witnessed the Hood interrogate Doom
on where he hid his vast fortune during
his time as ruler of Latveria

ADDITIONAL NOTES martial artist and mercenary who was
first seen when she was hired to
capture the Black Widow in Japan.
Snapdragon ambushed the Widow in a
dark room, her infrared visor giving her
the advantage and she subdued her.
Black Widow later defeated her in a fair
fight.
Snapdragon later joined Superia's
all-female super-villain army, the
Femizons. In the past, Snapdragon had
been trained alongside fellow Femizon,
Diamondback and held a grudge
against her. The two fought and
ROLE-PLAYING NOTES Snapdragon nearly killed her.
Snapdragon is a cold-blooded Diamondback swore revenge. and
mercenary, with no compulsion against alongside Captain America and the
killing. Falcon raided an A.I.M. weapons expo
on the island of Boca Caliente.

Diamondback drowned Snapdragon
and her body was returned to Japan
and cremated by her brother.
Snapdragon somehow returned to
life and began working for Count
Nefaria, the new Kingpin of Crime in
Los Angeles. She came into conflict
with Moon Knight and Echo who
revealed Nefaria's schemes and
arrested Snapdragon.
