Syllabus: ASL Training Center : American Sign Language 1

Course description: An introduction to American Sign Language. Topics include: basic vocabulary, grammar, history,
fingerspelling, numbers, terminology, and Deaf culture.
Time to complete: Approximately 60 to 90 online contact-hours.

Materials:
This course makes use of an online course shell hosted at www.ASL.tc. You may wish to visit Lifeprint.com to make
use of the resources there as well, but the assignments and quizzes for this course are all here at ASL.tc. You may also
wish to see if your local library has any ASL dictionaries available for check out. .

How to do this course:


On the course page (within the ASL.tc website) scroll down to the weekly lessons area. Go through the lessons
sequentially starting with lesson one. When you click on Lesson 1. It should open up a window with the contents. Click
on "enter" and view the presentation. Click on the various videos. Complete the practice sheet and quizzes for that
lesson then move on to the next lesson.

Grading:
As currently set up, this course is graded as "pass / fail." Students who complete key assignments at 70%or better will
pass the course. This course has around 80 various activities intended to help you learn sign language. All of them are
worth doing. All of them are valuable. However, you should pay particular attention to the 15 quizzes labeled "Quiz 1,
Quiz 2, Quiz 3," and so forth as well as the three quizzes labeled "Unit Test Review." If you get 70% or better on each
of these 18 assignments (the 15 quizzes and 3 Unit tests) you will pass this course. Since some students need a letter
grade for their local school or organization you can determine your letter grade for this course by making a note of the
percentage listed in the "Course Total" column on the far right of the grade report. Then use the following scale to
determine your equivalent letter grade for the course.

Scale: 100-95%=A, 90 = A-, 87=B+, 84=B, 80=B-,77=C+, 74=C, 70=C-, 67=D+, 64=D, 60=D-, 59=F.

Schedule:
This class is self-paced. You can go at whatever speed works best for you and/or your local organization. You may
however find it convenient to do the course as a "15-week" program.

Documentation:
Upon completion of the 15 lessons for this course, navigate to ASL 1 Course Completion Certificate. Scroll to the
bottom of that page and click ASL 1 Course Completion Certificate. You will be directed to a page with a button
"Review Your Certificate". When you press the button, and see the certificate, right click and open the PDF in a new
window to print. This certificate becomes available upon successful completion of the 15 Lesson quizzes and the three
Unit Test Review quizzes. This is a simple, auto-generated certificate that is based on the login information you
provided when you first subscribed to this program.

Note: If you need "signature documentation" (from a live human being) of having completed an ASL course then this is
