Course Description: Geometry is the second course in the sequence of high school mathematics in Georgia. The course represents a
discrete study of geometry with correlated statistics applications. Topics include transformations in the coordinate plane, congruence,
proofs of geometric theorems, similarity, right triangles, trigonometry, circles, expressing geometric properties with equations,
geometric measurement and dimension, modeling with geometry, and probability.
*Prerequisite Course: successful completion of Algebra 1
Text (optional): Holt McDougal. Analytic Geometry, Georgia Edition. Students can check out a hard copy from the bookroom
and can also access the book via Holt McDougal website. Students must first register at https://my.hrw.com.

BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology): All school and county policies for technology usage will be followed. Technology is allowed for
educational purposes and only to enhance the classroom experience. I welcome the use of technology to supplement the learning
environment. However, I will have sole discretion as to when it may be used and for what purpose in room FC02.

Materials for Success: Calendar (agenda, printable, electronic, etc.), one 3-ring binder, dividers, pencils, erasers, highlighter, markers
or colored pencils, dry erase marker, notebook paper, graph paper, ruler, compass, protractor, pencil pouch, and TI-36X Pro calculator or
the optional graphing calculator (TI-84+ or TI 84+ CE).

Grading per Semester: **Parents and students, student grades can be accessed online
• Teacher Formatives 20% through Synergy. Parents, if you do not yet have parent access,
• Common Quizzes 30% parent access can be obtained by contacting MHS. Both students
• Common Tests 40% and parents, please check grades frequently. We suggest logging
• Final Exam 10% in at least twice a week. Synergy is linked on the county and
school websites.
Attendance: To be successful, you must be in class. I can’t teach you if you are not here. Of course, don’t come to school if you are
running a fever or contagious. All previously assigned work that was due the day of the absence must be turned in the day you return.
All missed quizzes and tests must be completed within three days of your EXCUSED absence unless prior arrangements have been
made with the teacher. The assessment room will be scheduled thereafter to meet the school assessment make-up policy. Missing and
late assignments will be entered as a grade of zero in the gradebook until turned in. After three days, the missing grades will
remain zeros. It is your responsibility to make arrangements to make up your work and get the notes/work that you missed. If you are
absent due to a field trip, you do not have the three-day rule. You are allowed one day per day absent for the field trip to
get your work made up. If you are attending a field trip you should inform your teachers before you miss.

*Missing review days will not excuse you from taking a test or quiz upon your return.

Daily Work: Students will be expected to take notes and participate in class discussions, practice, and activities. Students will
be given assignments daily. These include in class assignments as well as homework. Practice is important to be successful in this
course. You never want a test or quiz to be the first time you have ever personally tried a problem. All work must be shown in order
to receive any credit. Label all papers with name, period, and date.

Homework: Students will have homework most nights and it will be due the next class day unless otherwise stated. Practice is
important to be successful in this course, and this is the purpose of homework. To become a great math student, you must practice your
math on a regular basis. Homework is one way we will practice. Put a star by problems you have questions about and let the teacher
know the next day. You may also come to my room after school to work homework problems so that you can ask questions as you have
them. Homework will often be discussed and will sometimes be collected and graded on both accuracy and completion.

Quizzes/Tests: Quizzes will be given frequently. Short quizzes are not always announced. Tests will be given at the end of each unit.
Longer units may have more than one test. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a make-up test with the teacher if one is missed.
Only excused absences will be considered for quiz or test make-ups.
** A student who pulls out a cell phone or other prohibited electronic during a quiz or test will receive a 0%.

Studying for Quizzes and Tests

1. Reread all notes and rework the examples. Check the class website for review videos made by the teacher.
2. Work the practice problems available on the study guide, review, practice sheet, or in the textbook. Check answers in
class and ask questions over any problems you don’t understand.
3. Seek help from the teacher throughout the unit on a regular basis. Don’t wait until the morning of the quiz or test to ask
for help…by then it is too late.
4. Study by DOING problems. It is easy to watch the teacher do the problems, but until you actually try the problems
yourself, you won’t know if you can really do them. Think about it… a person can watch hundreds of dunk videos and
still not know how to dunk.
5. Additional notes, videos, and practice problems can be found on the internet.
Extra Help: When you FIRST discover that you do not understand the material, ask for help! You should ask questions in class first.
Then, you should make arrangements to come after school for extra help as needed. I DO NOT hold help sessions before school, but I am
usually always here after school to offer assistance.

I recommend staying after school regularly to complete homework so that you KNOW you are doing it correctly. You do
not have to wait until you have a problem to come after. You can be PROACTIVE by coming to ensure you do not have a
problem. Students who make this a routine usually perform well on quizzes and tests.

Extra Credit: Extra credit is a supplement to the day-to-day assignments students are required to complete. Extra credit may include
bonus questions on tests or quizzes, or an additional assignment. If extra credit is offered it will be made available to the entire class.
No individual extra credit assignments will be assigned. Students are to do their work and any extra credit assignments throughout the
semester when assigned. I do not reward students for doing as little as possible throughout the year and then all of a sudden wanting to
do extra things at the end to make up for their lack of urgency during the semester.

Classroom Expectations
Behavior expectations
Goal: A positive, comfortable, and enjoyable learning experience for every student every day.
1. Exercise respect and courtesy for yourself and others at all times.
2. Leave all food and drinks in your locker (screw-top drinks are fine) – we want a clean, pest-free, environment.
3. Stay seated unless permission is given to do otherwise.
4. Appropriate classroom language and voice volume should be used at all times.
5. Remain actively involved in class until dismissed by the teacher (including taking notes or working on assignments)
6. All cell phones (or similar devices) are to be out of sight at times when those technologies are not necessary for the activity or task.
Any cell phone or similar electronic device that comes to my attention will be handled according to school policy.
7. Dress appropriately; Refer to the student handbook for the dress code.
8. Observe all other school rules.
*School procedures, policies, consequences and disciplinary actions can be located in the student handbook.
Academic Expectations
1. Arrive with all necessary tools for learning (passes to the vending machine will not be issued).
2. Assignments will be checked on a regular basis for completion and accuracy.
3. Missing/Late Assignments: You are responsible for making up all work missed when absent. Assignments not turned in within 3
days will remain a zero. If you are absent, you must turn in all previously assigned work the day you return. Missing and late
assignments will be entered as a grade of zero in the gradebook until turned in. Assignments cannot be made up for unexcused
absences. If you are not absent and turn in an assignment late, you will receive partial credit.
4. All work must be shown in order to receive any credit.

A Special Note Regarding Cheating: Cheating/Plagiarism will not be tolerated in any form including (but not limited to):
• copying (or letting someone copy) answers on a test, quiz, or assignment
• verbally or in writing giving or receiving help on a test or quiz
• using unauthorized reference material (paper or electronic) during a test, quiz, or assignment
• Stealing/selling/photographing assignments, quizzes, or test
• turning in someone else's work as your own (allowing someone else to do the work for you)
• discussing specific test or quiz items with someone from a period who has not yet taken the test or quiz
• seeing, examining, or referring to someone’s already graded assignment before you have turned yours in
• compromising the test security through the use of electronic devices

Consequences for all parties involved in cheating will include all of the following:
• parent contact
• office referral
• a grade of zero on the assignment
• do not ask me to write a recommendation for any college or scholarship application

Remember:
“Circumstances are temporary; character is forever.” – Rick Warren
“It takes but a moment to cheat or lie, but it can take a lifetime to rebuild trust once it is lost.” – Marilyn Ellis

Final Note: As your teacher, I want you to be successful in math. This will happen if you have good attendance, are an active
participant in class, if you take notes, do your assignments, study for quizzes and tests, ask for help when needed, and behave
appropriately in class. I am here for you and will do anything I can to help you achieve your goals. Success is a choice, so choose wisely.
