Postive Effect of Christainity in Nnobi

Christianity in Nnobi had a great impact in Nnobi and towards it's people. Christianity according to
Kalu(1980); was responsible for the educational, religious , political and social impacts of Christianity to
the people of Nnobi.

Starting with educational impacts: Nnobi enjoyed educational advancements from the arrival of
Christainity. Christianity came and allowed for the promotion of mass literacy through the introduction
of church learning where the people of Nnobi participated and were taught Aritimetics, Latin, English
and Catholic faith e.g cathicism (Ajayi, 1964). It was the impact and exploits of the church towards the
promotion education in Nnobi and every part of igboland that saw the establishment of Universal Basic
Education ( UBE) in 1957 (Emmanuel,2017). Nnobi owe the earliest establishment of the primary and
secondary education in the community. This is because, Nnobi had a lot of people that are educated and
are so because the church took interest in the spread of mass literacy in the community, to aid in the
spread of the gospel in Nnobi (Igbokwe Peter).

Socially Nnobi had a lot of cultural development which was championed by the arrival of Christianity.
Nnobi was a land that held her religious practices with high esteem. Nnobi prior to the arrival of
Christianity, held her cultural practices with high esteem and were feared by her neighbours. But
Christianity came around and made a atmosphere which had every community placed together under a
union and caused interaction which aided in eliminating the initial theory practised most communities in
Igboland prior to the arrival of Christianity (Ajayi,1964).

Economically, Christianity saw promoted the living standard of the people. It initiated many economic
development structures from its arrival at Nnobi that helped in the economic life of the people. Before
the civil war, Nnobi had establishments on vocational training that was set up by the Catholic Church
which aimed at training capable hands that would help in balancing and development of the community.
It was for that reason that every maiden born during the 1920s till late 40s enjoyed this opportunity and
exploited it. This however was the reason for the less deverstaion in the aftermath of the civil war 1967-
70, (Igbokwe Peter). The Afor market came to be with the planning of most of the people trained by the
Anglican and Catholic missionary, who benefited from the educational advancements brought about by
Christianity. It also helped in modernizing the festivities of the community which caused it to be more
friendly to strangers and opened an opportunity for the tourism sector to strive in Nnobi. Nnobi became
tourist attraction and now had hotels which acted as a environment booster (Emmanuel,2017).

In summary, Christianity as a religion was responsible for immense development in Nnobi which can
not be over looked. It's development is still visible in the Nnobi till today. The future generations are
greatful to the arrival and establisment of Christianity in Nnobi, which has served and by the grace of
God, it's still in service (Emmanuel,2017).

Chapter 5
Summary Conclusion and Recommendation

5.1. Summary

Having explained and discussed the impacts of Christianity in previous chapters, it is clear that
Christianity had contributed to the development of Nnobi, both positively and negatively. On the
positive side it was revealed that Christianity had touched the cultural settings of the people, changed it
and enhanced further interactions with the people of other communities. This opened the door for
economic growth and tourism. But as every good impact there must be a conresponding negative
impact which revealed that it affected the ideology and Ethics of the people. The fear of the devil by
humans is greater than that of God. This was seen with the attitude of the present Nnobi citizens who
now endurge in social vices and other misconduct. The rise in crime rose drasticly over the years and it's
still rising because the very strong belief of the people ( idemili deity) is now undermined, all thanks to
the church. The people now go around with the mindset that God forgives all sins so what ever they did
could be forgotten and forgiven by God. It goes further in the case of cultural advancements which
limited the powers of the traditional believe system that binds the people together under the umbrella
of decipline. From the research it is discovered that the people no longer have that Ethical decipline
which allows the community to strive without complications or disturbances.

Conclusion

Nnobi, as a community would always be thankful for the opportunity to grow which wasade available by
the activities of Christianity which is now a way of life for the people. Nnobi after nicknamed ANA NSO
places the community in a map of religious development which arises from its early activities with the
different missionaries that came forth. Because of its acceptance at the early stage, Nnobi became one
of the few communities that was developed by the activities of the church, who on their own invested
their capital and material resources towards the development of the people and the community. This is
visible from the early educational services it rendered to the people, the vocational centre it established
to empower the young men and women in the community prior to the civil war, the provision of
affordable educational institutions for the beginners stage till the primary and secondary education
level. All this and many more help to get the community to a greater hight. Nnobi just like every other
part of igboland will be at the forefront of development as a result of Christianity.

Recommendations

In order to further spread the positive attributes of Christianity to Nnobi, the different churches must
put aside their differences and work together to fight the mance of bad characters which is as a result of
unemployment of the youths in Nnobi and advice from dubious native doctors whose main objective is
to maximize profit by spreading negative approach towards Christianity. For this problem to be tackled,
the church must look at what was done prior to the civil war which saw a lot of voluntry converts who
did so in truth and spirit. The church must now look inward and work as a United force to grow the
people with skills and basic tools for survival, rather than to grow the account of the church and collect
from the less privelleged. By doing this the mindset of the present generations of young people would
change their ideology of the church as a milking ground to a place of salvation and growth both
spiritually and physically. This will help the church to have more grounds and continue to be the religion
of the people. Also it will reduce the social vises that have threatened to distroy the basic foundation of
the community.
