How Social Media Can Make History

The media gives opportunities to communicate in means that where never possible

before and all these change have been happening within only these past few years. Clay shirky

starts off with telling stories about media transformation. He tells about the four periods where

media has change enough to be truly considered as revolutionary. 1. the printing press 2. two

ways communication conversational media: telegraph and telephone 3. recording media other

than print: photograph, recorded sounds, movie 4. radio and television. In the old days if you

wanted a conversation you can grab one person and if the authority figure created group they

could give out the same message. However, with the innovation of the internet things become

much easier. If there was only one receiver or one sender of the information in the past, now

the internet provides an opportunity in wich there are multiple receiver and sender of

information.

As I’ve watch the video, Mr. Shirky gives an example of earthquake in china that has

occurred in 2009. With the help of twitter, facebook and other means of technology the citizens

of china spread the news of the earthquake as it was happening whereas the last time china

had quake of magnitude it took them three months to admit that it had actually happened. This

shows how much impact media has on the people all over the world. Later, the Chinese

government banned accessed to twitter, facebook and other social media sites that provided

information about the earthquake. They wanted to filter the shared information concerning

their country and the only way to do that was by forbidding access to the sites that where
causing that information to be spread. Another example is Obama’s site, when Obama

announced that he was going to change his vote on FISA fallowers on sites went berserk on

myObama.com later on, Obama went on the site to explain why he was changing his position

and according to Shirky the impressive things here is that Obama and the site never shutdown

the complainers. The complain understood that there role is to convene but not control.

Today, the internet is easily available for most of us and the information it brings a great

abundance. We can easily be notice of the latest news by keeping online our cellphones.

Sometimes ill use social media sharing how people are already famous because of social media.

Some are popular due to good news and gossips about them, but some are also popular

because of some negative news about them. Like Marlou Arizala has a problem within his

physical appearance so he change his face so people will accept him. Charice Pempengco also

change her sexual organ and appearance so she can really say that she is a guy in the heart and

the body. Marlou Arizala became Xander Ford while Charice Pempengco became Jake zyrus.

Both of them become trending on social media and have marked their own history within the

internet. People gave comment to them some people supported them, while some gave them

harsh comment. But the point is not wether the society accept them or not, but o how they

created their names in search bar of the internet. Many people aside from xanderford and

jakezyrus become extremely famous due to the social media. Some were even titled with

aliases. Because we ether the news is good or bad, as long as it is popular and within the

trends, then people focus on it, there starts another beginning of a history.
There for we live in a world where media global, social cheap. With the help of internet

we are no longer disconnected from each other. Even a decade ago, and as the capabilities of

the internet expand, the internet is becoming the career for other social media outlets such as

radio, television, music, magazines. And only thing we have to do now is to make best use of

this media!!
