In the footsteps of “Impeesa” The Scouting Meter Stamp Machine: Pitney Bowes “6300” series (MV). “Impeesa” is the “totem” given to Baden Powell by the Matabele (South African natives) and which means “Hyena that never sleeps” and refers to the persistence he had to fulfil his task. Then, after this story is taken to Europe the “Hyena’ is replaced by “Wolf, being “Wolf, that never sleeps". In the present participation we will try to highlight the most important aspects of the movement Baden Powell created and those which followed in his footsteps. Plan of exhibit 1. Our Founder: Baden Powell On February 22 1857, Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell was bom in London. When he was 3 years old, his father (Protestant vicar) died, leaving his wife with seven children. In 1870, Baden Powell sat for an entrance exam in the Military School and got the second best score among 718 candidates. Our Founder: Baden Powell In 1887, we find Baden Powell in Africa, taking part of a campaign against the Ashanti and the Zul, and later against the Matabeles, Because of his courage and astonishing ability to stalk, natives were so scared of him that they named him “IMPEESA". In 1899 he was sent to Mafeking, South Africa, to organize the northwest border forces. In 1908, he published the book “Scouting for Boys” as six fortnightly part-works. In 1910, he quit the army to focus exclusively on Scouting. In one of the stamps of the 150th Anniversary of Queen Victoria (1987), 2 young man with poster writing "RELIEF OF MAFEKING" can be seen. After 217 days, the siege was over and the news reached Great Britain, making Baden Powell a hero and a leader for the boys. After his return from Africa in 1903, Baden Powell found out that his manual of military “Aids to Scouting", had become a best-seller, and that it was being used by teachers and youth ‘The founder Si Willa Alexander Sent, ans brace at Penang Then, he was invited to participate in the youth organization “Boy's Brigade", which had been founded by his friend, William Alexander Smith. 1.2. Scouting is Born - Brownsea Island camp In August 1907, with the purpose of testing Baden Powells ideas, a camp took place in Brownsea Island where a group of twenty boys and his brother Donald participated. i QATAR * oma Ur, George Wright, 29a, Harcourt Road, Boscombe, BOURNEMOUTH, & Specimen Out of the twenty boys who took part in the camp, eight were from the “Boys' Brigade” organization and twelve from public schools, most of them sons of his friends. Even though it was an experimental camp, he laid the foundations of Scouting. 1.2. Scouting is Born - Scouting for Boys In 1908, Baden Powell published a collection of six installments which he named” Scouting for Boys”, which would be later edited as a book and served as basis for the creation of the World Scout Movement. ‘Two of his works "Reconnaissance and Scouting" (1884) and “Aids to Scouting” (1899), both military instruction books, were used by the British Army for field training. Later, the towns of Alcdzar and Acoy, thankful of the favors received by the saint, painted him on horseback representing the defense of the faith and victory of good over evil. The three points remind us of the three points of the Scout Promise (being duty to God and country, helping others and keeping the Scout Law). 2.1. The Fleur-de-lys has become the World Scout Badge. Other emblems or characteristic symbols of the different nations (e.g shields, flags, crosses, among others) are superimposed on the fleur-de-lys in order to differentiate one nation from another. 2.1, The Scout and Guides Badge - The Trefoil Bigewater, N.J. The motto is usually used in the fleur-de-lys and in the Scout salute. 2.8. The Sign and Salute ‘The Scout sign is used when greeting other Scout. It is made with the palm faced out, the thumb holding down the little finger, leaving the other three fingers outstretched. The Sign and Salute When King Prempeh fell into the hands of B.P’s troops in Kumasi (Capital of the Ashanti Tribe), he came to him holding out his left hand. B.P. held out his right in return but the Chief said: "No, in my country the bravest of the brave shake with the left hand, as it's on the side of the heart. The Uniform Every institution has its own uniform, which might vary in a few details as the badges or the hat, for example. ‘The main elements of the Scout uniform are: the trousers, which can be shorts as the original ones or long trou- sers used depending on weather conditions; Blue color shift to up ‘the neckerchief tied around the neck. 2.4. The Scout Method is the system of education used by the Scout Movement, which was created by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907. The Scout Method - How is it achieved? In order to achieve the mission, Scouting applies a system of progressive auto-education, which is complementary to the education the Scout receives from his family and school. Education through Service and Values / Community Service Service is one of the bases of the Scout Movement. Baden Powell included it in one of the points of the Scout Law and in the Promise. From 7” to 25" November 1918, a mail delivery service was organized in Prague and sits surroundings. Two postal stamps were printed, one ‘of 10 for the city mail and another of 20 for the surroundings deliveries. In this event, the Scouts and Guides participated in the organization of the postal service.
