Contents
Omeprazole

Indications
Duodenitis, duodenal erosions, duodenal ulcers, gastritis, gastric erosions, gastric
ulcers, symptomatic GERD w/ or w/ out erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison
syndrome & in the eradication of H. pylori.

Dosage
20 mg once daily. Gastric ulcers & erosive esophagitis 40 mg once daily. Eradication
of H. pylori 20 mg bid. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome 60 mg once daily.

Administration
Should be taken with food (Take immediately before a meal.).

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to omeprazole.

Special Precautions
Infants <2 yr.

Adverse Drug Reactions


Headache, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, rash.

Drug Interactions
Warfarin, phenytoin, cyclosporine, disulfiram, benzodiazepine, ketoconazole,
ampicillin esters, iron salts.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA)


Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus
(teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or
studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the
potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.

Contents
Ciprofloxacin

Indications
Treatment of resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue, bone & joint & intra-abdominal
infections; infectious diarrhea & typhoid fever.

Dosage
UTI 250-500 mg bid. Other infections 500-750 mg bid.

Administration
May be taken with or without food (May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI
discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.).

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any quinolone.

Special Precautions
Patients <18 yr, pregnancy & lactation.

Adverse Drug Reactions


Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or discomfort, headache, restlesness, skin
rash. Rarely, pseudomembranous enterocolitis, tendon rupture.

Drug Interactions
Sucralfate, Fe supplements, antacids, theophylline, NSAIDs, cyclosporine, warfarin.

Contents

Indications
Dietary supplement which helps reduce the risk of CHD by lowering blood
cholesterol levels, reduce absorption of carbohydrate, normalize bowel function &
alleviate constipation.

Dosage
Mix 5.4 g of psyllium powd w/ 250 mL water. To be taken once-tid.

Administration
Should be taken with food (Take immediately after mixing & drink an extra glass of
water. Ensure adequate fluid intake throughout the day. Do not take dry.).

Contraindications
Pathological narrowing in GIT, obstruction or threatening obstruction of the bowel.

Contents
Clarithromycin
Indications
Treatment of resp tract, skin & soft tissue, disseminated mycobacterial infections & in
the eradication of H. pylori.

Dosage
250 mg 12 hrly. More severe infections, disseminated mycobacterial infections & in
the eradication of H. pylori 500 mg 12 hrly.

Administration
May be taken with or without food.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clarithromycin, erythromycin or any macrolide.

Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation.

Adverse Drug Reactions


Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, taste perversion, dyspepsia, rash, headache. Rarely, QT
interval prolongation & cardiac arrhytmias, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, hearing loss,
tinnitus, vertigo & CNS, GIT, renal or hematologic effects.

Drug Interactions
Cisapride, pimozide, astemizole, terfenadine, theophylline, carbamazepine,
fluconazole, warfarin, digoxin, statins.

Contents
Metformin HCl

Indications
NIDDM particularly overwt patients whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by
diet, physical exercise & wt reduction alone. May be used w/ sulfonylureas,
thiazolidinediones or insulin.

Dosage
Initially 500 mg bid-tid, adjust dose after 2 wk. Max: 2.5 g/day.

Administration
Should be taken with food (Take during or after meals.).

Contraindications
Type I DM, diabetic ketoacidosis, hypersensitivity to biguanides, elevated serum
creatinine.

Special Precautions
Significant renal impairment, shock, severe infections, dehydration, before elective
major surgery, excessive alcohol intake, hepatic insufficiency, pregnancy & lactation,
childn.

Adverse Drug Reactions


Lactic acidosis in patients w/ significant renal impairment. Anorexia, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, constipation, abdominal pain or distention, taste
perversion.

Drug Interactions
Antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, NSAIDs, aminoglycosides, iodine contrast media,
glucocorticoids, β2 agonists, β-blockers, MAO inhibitors.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA)


Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk
but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies
have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not
confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no
evidence of a risk in later trimesters).

Contents
Glimepiride

Indications
NIDDM patients whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet, physical exercise
& wt reduction alone. May be used w/ metformin or insulin.

Dosage
Initially 1 mg once daily, gradually increased at intervals of 1-2 wk. Max: 4 mg daily.

Administration
Should be taken with food (Take immediately before the 1st main meal of the day. Do
not skip meals.).

Contraindications
Type I DM, hypersensitivity to glimepiride or other sulfonylureas, diabetic
ketoacidosis. Pregnancy & lactation.

Special Precautions
Elderly, hepatic or renal dysfunction. Hepatic & hematologic monitoring is
recommended.

Adverse Drug Reactions


Hypoglycemia, GI disturbance, allergic reactions. Rarely, increase in transaminase
levels, cholestatic jaundice, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, aplastic anemia,
agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis &
Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Drug Interactions
Insulin, other oral hypoglycemic drugs.

Co-amoxiclav: Amoxicillin & clavulanic acid

Indications
Prophylaxis against infections associated w/ major surgical procedures. Treatment of
resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue, O&G, bone, intra-abdominal & post-op infections.

Dosage
Tab Adult & childn >12 yr 250 mg/125 mg tid or 500 mg/125 mg bid. More severe
infections or resp tract infections 500 mg/125 mg tid or 875 mg/125 mg bid. Inj Adult
& childn >12 yr 1 g/200 mg 6-8 hrly. Childn ≤12 yr 30 mg/kg 6-8 hrly.

Administration
May be taken with or without food (May be given without regard to meals. Best taken
at the start of meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.).

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Penicillin-associated cholestatic jaundice or hepatic
dysfunction.

Special Precautions
Hepatic or renal impairment. Cephalosporin allergy. Infectious mononucleosis.
Pregnancy.

Adverse Drug Reactions


Diarrhea, nausea & vomiting, skin rash & urticaria, vaginitis. Rarely,
pseudomembranous colitis, stomatitis & candidiasis, erythema multiforme & other
skin effects. Hepatic, renal, hematologic or CNS effects.

Drug Interactions
Disulfiram; allopurinol; anticoagulants; OC.
