Application The single phase inverse definite minimum time overcurrent pro- tection 75K86 is installed for the main protection of radial cir- cuits in medium voltage networks and industrial installations and as back-up protection, The version with current transformer supply allows the application in installations where no station battery is available. The 7SK88 can be supplemented by the directional relay 7SP88. This combination provides a directional inverse time protection system for the protection of ring mains and parallel lines with single end infeed or parallel transformers (details in description 7SP88). 1.1 Characteristics © The 7SK88 contains the overcurrent element I> with a dependent current time characteristic. As an optional supplement, a high set instantaneous element I>> can be provided. * Operations for tripping due to overcurrent I> and for short- circuit instantaneous tripping due to high set element I> are indicated on separate indicators with storage function. ° The apparatus can be supplied with the characteristic: Normal inverse as per BS 142, very inverse or extremely inverse. ° The auxiliary supply voltage is connected directly +o the terminal studs. A version with current transformer supply is possible. * Because of the phase segregated of construction, the protection in the other phases remains in service during testing of an element of the protection. Furthermore, the faulted phase is indicated. The static inverse time overcurrent relay also provides © lower current transformer burden e practically no overshoot (4) B14043-27230-U211-42-7600 © limited maintenance © increased shock insensitivity © Testing The testing can be easily performed by a test adapter and a por- table test set. The primary current is without any influence on the test procedure. Principle of measurement The current from c.t. is led to the terminals 3 and 4. The setting © of the operating value I, is selected on the frontplate. The current is converted into a proportional d.c. voltage in the measuring in- put circuit. When the set value I, is exceeded the function gener- ating network I = f(t) will be released to provide the requested dependent current time characteristic. After the allocated time delay the tripping relay A and indicator I> are energized. In case of high short circuit currents the hich set current indi- cator I> is operated at a multiple of .the I, setting (I> 71) and instantaneous tripping is occurs (without Br. 2, without C12 Capacitor 012 delays the instantaneous tripping, Br. 2 blocks I> . In planning the tripping circuits, ensure that the rating of the ~ output relay contacts are not exceeded. supply, The auxiliary supply voltage is lea to terminal 9 ( L+) or terminal 7 (if 220 V model is used) and terminal 8 ( L-). The 220 V model is fitted with a dropper resistor which is located at the main terminals for good heat dissipation. The resistor can attain a sur- face over-temperature of 200°C - it must be ensured that the resul- tant heat can properly dissipate and is not obstructed by adjacent wiring or other restrictions. If the indicator shows "tripped", it can be reset on application of the auxiliary voltage. (4) £14043-F7230-U211-A2-7600 o c.t. supply A saturation c.t. is provided to deliver a smoothed secondary voltage for the power supply of the internal circuitry. (or 5A respectively) (4) B14043-F7230-U211-A2-7600 A The relay measuring element requires a d.c. supply (see survey of types, section 13). With c.t. supply an additional internal circuit powers the mea- suring element from the c.t. secondary current. An auxiliary d.c, supply is still required for the circuit breaker trip coil. As a further alternative, current transformer supply plus c.t. operated trip coil for exawple Siemens type 3AX11(H86w), can also be operated when an auxiliary supply is not available. An auxiliary c.t., with saturation characteristic, type 4AM5070-8AB or 44M5065-2CB, connected in the c.t. circuit as shown in section 2.4 gives the required power (up to 20 VA at 0.5 or 1A). For reliable operation adequate primary current (greater than c.t. rated current) is necessary. Thus, this method is not suitable for earth fault tripping if the earth fault current is less than full load current. In such cases an auxiliary supply is essential. 4. Current transformer selection The nominal admissible size of the c.t. can be determined by the rule that a steady-state a.c. short circuit current up to the set value I> (pick-up value of high set element) can be transformed without saturation taking into account the actual total c.t. burden. I>> pick-up value of high set element a rat rated current ALF accuracy limit factor The phase overcurrent relay has a very low burden. Thus, as a gener- al rule, @ 15 VA 10P10 (knee point voltage >190 V for 1 A resp. 38 V for 5 A transf. second rating) transformer is sufficient. In many cases, a lower output will suffice. This can easily be checked by the general principles applying to the calculation of c.t. bur- dens. (4) £14043-P7230-U211-a2-7600 When used as a ground fault protection relay, the low burden cha- racteristic allows the relay to be set at the very sensitive cur- rent level of 0.1 - 0.4 x trated even when used with c.t.'s of standard output. If the trip coil has to be operated by c.t. 4AM5070-8AB for 5 A vated current or 4AM5065-20B for 1 A rated current a minimum c.t. output of 30 VA 10P10 is required. Design The synthetic material case is designed for switchboard panel flush mounting. It corresponds to the protection class IP54 (terminals IP04). The module carrier with input current transformer and auxiliary supply is built as a slide-in unit and is screwed to the case. The module with the active part is withdrawable (i.e. a plug-in unit). On removal of the front cover the current transformer termi- als are automatically shortcircuited and all setting elements accessible to touch are made potential free. Electrical connec— tions are made via studs on the rear of the apparatus. All setting elements and indicators are visible through the transparent front cover. Resetting of the target indicators is effected from external. (4) £14043-F7230-U21 1-42-7600 -10- Setting the relay 6.1 Overcurrent element I> Remove front cover by releasing captive screws top and bottom. Removal of the cover automatically short circuits the input from the associated current transformer and disconnects it from the internal circuits and the tripping and alarm circuits are inter- rupted. Thus the accessible components on the relay front are entirely volt-free, When used for phase overcurrent protection, one or two further 7SK88 relays are installed in the remaining phases. These remain operative. = The overcurrent element I> has two settings: 6.1.1 Uurrent setting I, Ip (plug setting) can be selected in one of the following ranges. 0.1-0.4A, 0.2-0.8A, 0.5-2A, 1-4A, 2,5-10A, 4-16A in 7 equal steps by a rotary link on the front plate. These setting values on the front plate are given in amps. The two screws must be re-tightend carefully. The link must not be left in an open position. This setting allows the overcurrent tripping to be selected with res- pect to circuit rated load and current transformer ratio. . a e.g. c.t. ratio 200/5 A . circuit full load current 120 A required overcurrent tripping 1.25 x full load (for example) current relay range 2,5 to 10a eee rook 75) a P 200 Nearest setting = 3.75 A (4) B14043-F7230-U211-A2 -7600 -11- 6.1.2 Time multiplier (1M) Set by slotted rotary dial on the front plate; two ranges are available: 0.05 to 0.5 in steps of 0.05 (with red selector plug on PCB in position I ~ as set in the factory), alt. 0.55 to 1 in steps of 0.05 (with red selector plug on PCB in position aaa The adhesive strip for the TM scale situated on the rear of the front plate must also be removed and fixed on the front to cover the printed letters TM into TM + 0.5. Thus the alteration of the IM~setting range is made visible. The TM-setting allows selection of the time scale against which the inverse characteristic is set. The intermediate curves given by the 0.05 steps lie between the curves shown. The recommended grading time between successive relays is 0.3 to 0.4 sec. 3 Current time characteris The current time characteristics t = £(1/1,) for the inverse time overcurrent relay 7SK88 are shown on page 12 to 14. I: Current in A I,: Current setting in A 1: Time multiplier adjustable on front panel, as per BS 142 The current time charateristic of 7SK88 is designed according BS142. The relay must not pick-up below 1,05 x setting. The curves are not defined acc, BS142 between 1,05 to 2 x setting. About this demand the curves of 7SK88 are defined from 1,5 x setting. In the range between 1,15 to 1,5 x setting the relay 7SKB8 is certainly tripping ,but the tripping time is not defined and different from the relay. If the operating time proves to be too short, it can be extended by inserting a capacitor, on the solder tags marked C12 on the printed cireuit board. A dry type tantalum capacitance is recom— 4. mended (e.g. Siemens B45265 with at least 35V d.c. and tolerance + 10 #). The required capacitance for a particular time delay is given in the following diagram. Check that there are no signs of physical damage. The relay is thoroughly works-tested and calibrated. It contains no moving parts and is therefore ready for installation without adjustment. If the indicators show "tripped" (red) when delivered, this is unimportant since it can be reset as soon as the auxiliary supply voltage is connected or, with supply from c.t., when at least 20 % load current flows in the primary circuit. It has to be noticed that the ordering code of the front cover and rating plate are equal. . (4) B14043-F7230-U211-Aa2-7600 0 -19- Commissioning At first, check that the connections of current transformers, tripp~ ing- and alarm connections as well as the polarity of the auxili- ary supply are correct: a) Check ratio and connections of c.t.'s Check auxiliary supply voltage and polarity ») . Check reponse of relay at your settings: CAUTION: When removing or restoring connections, the accepted safety practices and regulations must be observed. During all measurements take care that the thermal withstand capability is not exceeded (see section 11). b1) Remove transparent front cover, The external c.t. is auto- matically short-ciruited and disconnected from relay. b2) Use the original test plug with the associated cable 7XV81 (which includes the tripping circuit output - see section 8.1) Check the operating time at one or two points on the charac- teristic, one with a test current of approximately four times plug setting and one at a higher value if possible (Siemens test sets 7VP44 or 7VP461 may be used for this purpose). The permissible tolerance should not exceed t 20 % (according to BS 142). Should larger tolerances exist then, as a first step, it should be checked: - superimposed load current | not possible if 7xv81 - shunt circuit for test current is used for testing - test current not constant during relay delay time - test current not injected (in particular for relay with c.t. supply). (4) £14043-F7250-U211-A2-7600 -20- - test current not sinusoidal > The testing set doesn't deliver an impressed current. With e.t. supply there are greater tolerances because the test current wave form may be disturbed as a consequence of the non-linear burden of the saturation transformer. You can get a correction with current of a source with impressed current or with higher voltage and greater series resistor. If,after checking the above points an excessive tolerance exists then the complete relay should be returned for repair. Do not attempt recalibration. 3) The reponse of the high set element may be similarly checked. The permissible tolerance should not exceed t 10 #. * A steady state testing is, as a rule, not possible because with slow control the thermal withstand capability of current circuit may be overloaded. ce ) Check correct functioning of tripping circuit (with circuit breaker if possible) and indicating circuits all in conjunc- tion with directional relay 7SP88 if fitted. a ) Restore equipment to proper operating condition. Important: - After testing the relay it is essential that the correct type of plastic front cover is refitted.
