L.5.13.3 How prepare a Grain Calculation

This grains calculation is dependent on the inputs from the LoadPlan (Preplanning) Calculations. Before any
grains stability calculation can be done, a loading distribution must first be completed.

Two scenarios are will be discussed here. One is when there is only one stowage factor and the other is when
there are two or more stowage factors.

L.5.13.3A Loading Grains when there is only 1 Stowage Factor

1. Enter the fuel, freshwater and other known weights for the departure condition.
2. Save the file for this voyage. Example: "Norfolk to Port Said".
3. Click the "GrainCalc" button in the toolbar or the "Grain Calculation" in "Calculations" menu. The
"Grain Cargo Distribution" window will be displayed as in the picture below.

4. Decide whether the full holds are Untrimmed or Trimmed. Generally, “Untrimmed” is to be selected.
5. You may choose whether you want the figures to be rounded to the nearest tens. The default option is
"No".
6. If the Stowage Factor is not yet entered, click the "Stowage Factor" button then enter as appropriate.
Click "Update Cargoes".
7. Decide which holds would be filled “Full” and “Slack”. At the right side of the Grains Cargo
Distribution display, there are check boxes for each hold which you have to check, or uncheck, whether
it is full or slack. The default distribution is slack at the end holds. This is normally done when you
need to fix the trim at the end of loading. However, if trimming with 2 holds is no longer necessary,
you may opt for a slack at the middle hold to minimize the heeling moment.
8. Enter the total weight in the "Total Cargo to Load" text field. Then click "Distribute".
There may be messages that will come out. You may skip reading these messages.

8.1 Overflow

This message box will appear when you intend to load an amount that your holds cannot possibly
carry. In the picture below a weight of 64,000T of SF 1.36561 m3/mt will occupy a total volume of
87,399.4m3 but the total capacity of the holds for this ship is only 87,298.4m3.

8.2 Slack Hold/s becomes Full Hold/s Untrimmed

LoadMan is programmed to fill the selected full holds first and the remaining weights are to be
distributed to the other hold/holds as slack. The picture below shows an attempt to load 63600 MT
with a stowage factor of 49ft3/LT. The end holds are intended to be slack.

The first message appears because the remaining weight intended for the first slack hold (Hold 1) will
occupy a space that is enough as a Full Untrimmed. LoadMan will fill this hold with the Untrimmed
Volume. The same will be done to the next hold (Hold 7). And finally, you will be informed that the
intended total cargo cannot be loaded, as in the third message box below.

8.3 The intended Slack Hold/s would be Empty

As previously stated in 8.2, the selected full holds will be filled first and the remaining weights are to
be distributed to the other the hold/holds as slack. Because the total cargo can already be taken by the
full holds, there will be nothing left for the slack holds. Further, these full holds will likely be slack
holds.

If you continue with this distribution, the bending moment is expected to be large.

8.4 Not all Holds are Full

This is a case when you attempt to load all holds FULL but the total weight is not enough. It means
that some holds must be loaded slack. LoadMan will fill some holds FULL and distribute the remaining
weight to the end holds. The first message box below will be shown.
You are asked if you agree with end holds being slack. If you do not agree, a suggestion that the
middle hold would be the one that is slack.

9. Click the "Send to Plan" button. This will update the LoadPlan Window and the initial results like trim,
drafts, GM, etc are updated. Then the "Grain Loading Info", like in the next picture below, will be
displayed. You might need to edit the contents of the end holds to adjust the trim if in case necessary.

The picture to the right shows 5 holds (2-3-4-5-

6) under the Filled Holds-Untrimmed list. It
means the end holds are slack as they are not
listed as full. You may click the "Shift" button to
shift all holds from Untrimmed to Trimmed or
click on a particular hold to shift it from
Untrimmed to Trimmed or vice versa, if
necessary.

L.5.13.3B Loading Grains when there is more than 1 Stowage Factor

When loading with several stowage factors, the weight in each hold must have been calculated before they are
entered. You have already decided which hold/s is/are full and slack.

1. Enter the fuel, freshwater and other known weights for the departure condition.
2. Enter the stowage factors of the cargo in each cargo hold. You may enter these in the "S.F" column or via
“Settings” + “Stowage Factors”
3. Enter the weight in each hold. The picture below shows the weight distribution in the LoadPlan. In the
below, there are 2 stowage factors loaded at alternate holds.

4. Save the condition like "Norfolk to Port Said".

5. Click the "GrainCalc" button. The picture below shows the Grain Loading Info window. Notice there are 4
holds inside the "Filled-Holds Untrimmed" list box. It means 3 holds will be slack.

6. Select the form you want to preview. This will be discussed in Section L.5.13.4 How to make a Grain
Calculation Form.
