SHOULD VIDEO GAMES BE CONSIDERED A SPORT?

In this 21st century, video games are becoming increasingly important. People no
longer just play video games for fun as it is now highly competitive. In this essay, I
will subscribe to the view that video games should be considered a sport, and in
the paragraphs that are to follow, I will give reasons and evidences to support my
claim.

Firstly, it is not as physical as other games but, electronic games also consume
lots of energy. For instance, when one plays Nintendo Wii, you actually move
around a lot. Virtual Reality (VR) games also require lots of focus and physical
movements. A gamer has to be strategic, tactical and have a very fast response
time when playing video games just like in major sports.

Also, some video games require focus, attention and fast reflexes. This makes use
of the gamers’ cognitive abilities as it does require training, coordination and can
be very dependent on the mind. One does not just get up and become a
professional gamer; it does take lots of practice, effort, time and skills to become
one. It does not happen by accident and definitely not everyone can do it. The
same can be said for sports like athletics, football, etc.

One of the main reasons why video games should be considered a sport is because
of their competitive nature. There are kids that are not into outdoor games and
sports, but most of them prefer to stay indoors and play competitively with others
online (Mass Multiplayer Online). Also, video game competitions like sports, has
rules and live referees.

Furthermore, most video games, for example Esports are entertaining and are
making lots of money. They are played worldwide by millions of people. When
played competitively, gamers earn money, especially the winners. For example, the
National League of Legends tournament has a $ 1 million prize for the winners. As
for the spectators, watching competitive games surely entertain them just like
sports. For example, The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation hosts gamers
that play competitive soccer on Play Station wherein the final winner will have a
cash prize. It is so entertaining for the spectators as well.

Lastly, for those suffering from obesity, disability and mental health, video games
can be considered a sport for them. They can play it competitively with others.
Disability and obesity can limit people from playing certain sports, but with the
help of Esports they too can can play online and compete.

In conclusion, with all the above-mentioned paragraphs, it is clear that video

games should definitely be considered a sport because of their competitive nature,
the use of one’s mind, professionalism, entertainment and because it also makes
money.
