What is It

Speech Styles

When a person interacts with others, he or she uses a particular style

of speaking or speech style. A speech style also indicates the level of
formality with which a person speaks.

The Dutch linguist Martin Joos, in his book The five Clocks, identified
the five types of speech style: Intimate, casual, consultative, formal and
frozen. These speech styles are also called language registers.

According to Martin Joos (1976:156), speech style here means the

form of language that the speaker uses which characterized by the degree
of formality. He identified the styles in five classes such as frozen style, formal
style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style.

Types of Speech Styles

Intimate

According to Martin Joos, is characterized by a complete absence

of social inhibitions. This style is used by participants who share a very close
relationship, such as between very close friends, siblings, husband and wife,
parents and children, and boyfriend and girlfriend. In this style, the
participants share a completely private vocabulary, making it difficult for

8
others who are outside of the group to understand. The participants know
each other very well, and often know each other’s intention, so there is no
need for too much words or additional explanations.

Here are some other features of an intimate speech style:

a. Conversations are in private.
b. Usually uses short, incomplete utterances.
c. Do not require Grammar and proper word choice.
d. Makes use of non-verbal cues to convey messages.
e. Conversations may contain jokes.
f. Intimacy words are used such as endearment (e.g., sweetheart,
dear, honey) are used.

EXAMPLES: Couple talking about their future plans, family sharing ideas, very
close friends sharing secrets, etc.

Being the most intimate among the speech styles, this would be
avoided in public and professional situations.

Husband: Honey, it seems like our kids take much of our time lately.

Wife: I thought so too…

Husband: Would you like to have some “we time” tomorrow?
Wife: Well, I’d love to, hon!

Casual

Casual speech style is a relaxed or informal dialogue between

friends, peers, colleagues, or family. This is an informal communication
between groups and peers. Casual style is used in conversation between

9
friends and insiders who have something to share and have shared
background information but don’t have close relations.

Characteristics of this speech styles includes:

a. Conversational in tone. (Slang or non-standard words or
expressions), colloquial words, elliptical sentences (some words
are omitted), and informal contractions (e.g, aint, dunno, gonna)
are used.
b. General Words: rather than technical ones are used.
c. Interruptions are common.
d. Nicknames are used in addressing one another.

EXAMPLES: phone calls, everyday conversation with friends, chats, etc.

This speech style is used in informal situations. You may also use this
when you would like to make someone feel at ease or when you want to
know that individual on a more personal level.

Friend 1: What are you up to?

Friend 2: Nothing. I’ve just been doing my homework in our arts
class.
Friend 1: Would you like to come over for a movie this weeked?
