Vishwanath is not the only deity. He resides with
his complete family and his ganas. The temple is
mentioned in the Kashi Khand of Skanda Purana.

1780, AhilyaBaiHolkar rebuilt the temple, not at

original site but adjacent to it. Temple is built in
ancient Panchayatnama style where the ‘Mool-
Nayak’, that is Vishwantha, resides in ‘Mool
Mandir’. It is surrounded by temples in the four
corners.2
North-east of the mool mandir stood Annapurna, in
the south-east the Avimukteshwar Mahadev,
Parvati Temple in the Northwest, Laxmi-Narayan
temple in the south-west. The low-roof colonnade
with over forty pillars was built by Baiza Bai of
Gwalior state.3
The Saraswati vigraha or sapt saraswati at the
Saravasti Phatak is said to be established by Vyas or
Yajnavalak himself, for the deliverance of the Kashi
folks from curse that made them lose their
knowledge, wealth. 4

Similarly, Apsareshwar Mahadev was established

by the Apsaras. Draupaditya and
PanchPandaveshwar were established by Draupadi
and Pandavs respectively. There were rows of
Shivlings, known as Kashi-Kachehari. One A Vigrah
of Kapil Muni.5
Vishwanath temple had many trees that were either
mentioned in shastras or stood there for ages.
Whenever the name Akshayvat tree is taken, either
Prayagraj or Gaya pops up in mind. But there is a
Akshayvat tree in the Vishwanath temple too. 6
Acharya Nakuleshwar came here with his disciples
and gave them the ‘Tatva gyan’. Since Nakuleshwar
Mahadev resides within the Akshayvat, therefore
the tree is ancient too. Traditionally, the Sanyasis
and dandi-swamis take food under the
Akshayavat.7

These temple, vigrahas were not randomly placed,

their place distinctly mentioned in the Kashi-Khand
of the Skanda Purana, with the Pauranic anecdotes
and punyas related to it. 8

थान य मह वम्
थानं धानं न बलं धानं,
थाने थतः कापु षोऽिप शूरः ।
अथ- थान धान है, बल धान नह है । थान के भाव से
कापु ष भी शूर हो जाता

Rural folks from the hinterland of India desire to do
‘the Kashi-Yatra’. ‘Kashi-yatra’ is not any random
strolling. Since ancient times pilgrims been doing
‘Shri Kashivishwanath antah-grahi pradakshina
yatra, Navagraha yatra, Rudra hanuman yatra,
chappan vinayak yatra etc. 10

Shastras mention 84 such yatras. Every yatra has a

specific number of deities whose temples are visited
by the devotees after they take ‘samkalp’ at the Vyas
Bhavan, another historical monument. Like
ancestors of Hindus once did. 11

In the Vishwanath lane, It is like walking through

the living museum. Hindus from all over the Indian
subcontinent have been immigrating to Kashi. In
the sixteenth century, Khatri traders settled here,
popularly known as Lahori Tola.12

form of ‘Anand-Kanan’.A devotee directly after
Ganga snana could go to Vishwanath, doing a

But in the summers of 2018, an exasperated Swami
Avimuketashwaranand, taking padayatra over the
mishandling of vigarahas of the Puranic Temples.
They locked the deity or razed every temple in the
way of the corridor. Those vigrahas that were
served since antiquities were torn.16

A Pran-pratishthit Vigraha is a ‘living’ deity, the
pujari treats it like a living entity. Not letting
regular puja or bhog be done was anti-shastras.

Ancient monument preservation Act 1904 and The
Ancient Monuments and archeological sites and
Remains act 1958 aims at the ‘preservation of
ancient monuments, an object of archeological and
historical or artistic interest’,
‘which has been in existence for not less than 100
years’ and the authorities brazenly destroyed
thousands of years old vigraha, temples but also
discontinued the rituals.

The centuries old Saptrishi Arti, was performed on

the road, as the then CEO of the project, PCS Vishal
Singh was not happy as the information leaked that
Kailash temple in the Viswanath complex was
damaged. The Official did not let them enter the

‘Chaalan’ doctrine and they are kept secured where

that was later adopted by Swami

application of “chalan-paddati’, this is applicable
when the temple-vigrah are damaged naturally by
wind or river flow or chandalas have been eating
meat nearby20.

Even in those cases the damaged vigrah is

reconsecrated with Panchang pujan, havana
evoking gods in sarvatobhadra mandal. As per the
Aagam, Bhrigu Sanhita, if the Shivlinga is
established by Devta, demons, Rishis or the

Vishwanath courtyard fell mysteriously ‘on its own’,
even when there was no rain and thunder. Mehant
Bachcha Pathak and Raju Pathak cried foul that the
government conspired to kill ‘Baba Akshayvat’, 23

that trees won’t be touched but they cunningly
damaged the base and support of the old tree that
led to its collapse. Later Mehant Raju Pathak and
his family were put in house arrest. 24

using fraud methods. They evicted the present
mehant of Vishwanath Temple Dr. Kulpati tiwari
from his ancestral house by digging his house from
all sides. like they collpased the Akshayvat tree. 26

During the lockdown, the officials destroyed the

ancient panchyatam style of the temple. The four
temples of Avimukteshwar Mahadev, Parwati,
Lakshmi Narayan, Annapurna established in the
four corners of the ‘mool-mandir’ have been
removed. look at the map closely. 27
Even if we forget the heritage value, what moral
right did the Modi have to destroy the Temple
constructed by Ahilya Bai Holkar and other rajputs
and maratha kings. These were heritage that
needed to be preserved. 28
120 vighras-shivlingas like Panch-Pandav,
Bhgairathi Vinayak, Gajanan Vinayak, Dwar
Vinayak etc vigrahas mentioned in Kashi Khand of
the Skanada Puran, that comes under the proposed
corridor. Many of the Vigrahas in the list were
either desecrated, damaged or missing.29

Swardwareshwar mahadev: it was in the angan of

Vibhuti narayan singh aka bablu. The temple was
razzed. It was temple mentioned in skand
purana.
Krishn says 'I am peepal in trees'. They didnot
spared even this.
So govt gave private tender to demolish the
historical lanes and then made guest house on
sacred space and now planning to give the
management to a private party. What was wrong
with those people who were living and earning for
generation.

paksha pachmi is regraded best day for darshan as
punya is high. No more extra punya, shivlinga is

It is a simple game, there are some 120 shivlingas
and vigraha and 12 trees and wells that comes in
the Kashi corridor. Regular devotees fear if their
vigrah is broken and threw in drain. Govt should
give access to archaks, not appointed by them. and
make things clear.
