LAB 10

Names: Michael Page, Bret Oetting, Marcus Victoria, Esteban Lau Koo
For the current City WAN layout of Hastings, KY we are planning to change their current

layout to a new Wi-Fi layout. Their previous layout with the T1 connections were out of date,

and very cost inefficient for the city. We found that by getting rid of the current layout setup with

T1 connections we will be able to update the infrastructure to more modern times, but also bring

the city wireless for all the residents.

What Type Of Media

The media that will be used for this project will be strictly wireless, in order to achieve

that for this project we will be using a mesh network topology. In order for the network to have

the best strength possible and reach all of the consumers using the wifi we will be able to use

access points for the network. For this project we will have a single router in each building as

well as two in the city hall. One will be the primary router and the other will be a backup due to

the city hall being the hub of this network. With this we will have about 20 routers working with

each other to complete this mesh network.

With the access points we will be able to expand the reach of the routers so that the

network will be able to be used wherever in the city that you are. Also with this each building

will have their own public and private wifi. This is so that the employees will still be able to

work efficiently in their offices while any guests will be able to use wifi as well without taking

up the strength of the Wi-Fi. The addition of this with the access points will be able to have the

city connected to all of the sites at all time, as well as being able to communicate with each other.

Hardware Upgrades

● New Servers for school buildings (Suggestion)

● Fiber wiring for the LAN for extra speed /strength( suggestion not needed)

Recommendation for Wireless WAN

Since this project is going to be covering 12 square miles, the Wireless Wan would need

to be able to cover a very large area since there are numerous buildings with different sizes, as

well as geographical differences. With the implementation of Wi-Fi for all what we would

recommend is mesh wireless WAN. When implemented correctly this will be able to meet the

range requirements needed and with this specific topology there are unique benefits that would

be great for the city.

● Self-configuring

● Self-healing

● Great coverage

● City connectivity

With these unique benefits that the mesh network will bring it will make it easier to maintain

then the current system that is in place. Also the cost for maintaining this type of network will go

down over time. Not only does it bring benefits to the city, but all the buildings will be able to

increase the efficiency of the different industries that will be located in the city.

Another reason we are recommending the mesh network for the wireless WAN is to be

able to have everything in the city connected. With this the communication between all the

buildings will be sharper, and being able to transfer things to the servers or other computers will
be seamless. This also addresses the problem of having separate Active Directory trees, since

everything will be connected. There would be no inconvenience of having different Active

Directory trees, everything will be able to go under one tree or reduce the number of Active

Directory trees.

Type Of Configuration For Wireless Public Network

For the Wireless WAN we are recommending that a mesh Topology is going to be used

for the WAN. This will consist of IPv4 connections for all of the computers and router addresses.

This will be done with the Help of the Comcast provider. They will help with all of the TCP/IP

configurations as well as using DHCP servers. With the IPv4 they will be able to easily assign IP
addresses and have a good security measure. Potentially we could also use IPv6 for more

security for the government offices, but for convenience and unity having everything on IPv4

makes everything consistent with each other. Finally for the access points there will be nodes

being used to extend the coverage range to make sure that everyone will have the free public wifi

for the city. For the free wireless public network there will be hotspots throughout the city that

will be connected to the network to have increased speeds and reliability. This can be available

through Comcast or through other hotspot providers if they have their own. The free Wi-Fi will

be running at 2.4ghz speed while hotspots can have access to 5.0ghz speed.

Price List For The Project

● Consulting Costs: 16 days, 8 hours per day, 5 days per week = 19,200

● Installation and configuration costs: 23 days, 8 hours per day, 5 days per week = 18,400
