“A Personal Review on the Documentary Film "The Social Dilemma"

Section A. An Introduction

The film "The Social Dilemma," directed by Jeff Orlowski, is about the global
influence of social media, how people invest their time on it, and the positive and negative
effects of social media. Some tech experts appear in the film, which discusses the dark side of
social media.

First and foremost, what exactly is social media? Social media is an application that people use
to make their lives easier. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and other social
networking sites are only a few examples. There are several ways to use social media.
However, the majority of people use these applications to express thoughts, activities,
perceptions, and issues, as well as to upload photos and videos. Most people are using social
media to be amused, to keep in touch with loved ones, to connect with family members who live
outside of the country, to keep up with news, to listen to music, and to watch live broadcasts,
which show exactly what is going on. Social media is used by almost everyone on the world. Of
course, when we hear the term "social media," we immediately think of technology. Technology,
also known as "devices," will still be associated with social media. As time has passed, social
media has grown. With the aid of social media and technology, even the unreachable has
become available. Engineers collaborate with supercomputers to build social media. As time
has passed, social media has progressed, and several researchers have developed Artificial
Intelligence to assist them in tracking information systems.

Section B. Review of the Film

This will force you to reconsider your life, decisions, and viewpoints. It's very
enlightening. Especially for those who have long viewed social media as a negative influence.
This is yet another justification, if not the only reason, why we should get off our screens and
into the real world as soon as possible to form real opinions and make non-biased decisions.
I've always been concerned about losing the opportunity to consider multiple points of view, as
well as being less tolerant and mindful of opposing viewpoints. And now, when they tell us that,
1
they are tipping the scales of the general system of opinion forming, resulting in a much more
fragmented world in which we are divided without even knowing what we were put through to
get there. It's about erecting a society based on coercion, where at the end of the day, you don't
know whether your ideas are your own or whether they were triggered by something external.

Definitely worth watching. It's essentially brain food you didn't realize you would need. The
beauty of it is that it conveys the seriousness of the situation in a clear, concise manner without
being dull. It basically keeps your attention throughout the documentary, with not a single
second spent on a non-essential subject. It manages to shake audiences to their hearts while
still providing hope for humanity. It isn't some revolutionary tale intended to incite an
insurrection, but rather something that is needed to bring about substantive change for the
educated race that we pretend to be in the best possible way.

Section C. My Reflections

As technologists, I believe it is our duty to conduct a structured analysis of these

problems in order to mitigate the negative consequences of these networks. Our culture isn't
accurately represented by social media. We don't have as many friends in real life. We also
don't always express our current thoughts and behavior, nor do we actively comment on others'
thoughts and actions. While we have the ability to disseminate knowledge, we usually do so
slowly and in a way that allows personal experiences to decide legitimacy and comprehension.
Social networks and AI-based systems are extremely beneficial and have aided humanity in a
variety of ways. However, these benefits do not arrive without consequences. Individually, social
networks and AI-based recommendation systems have negative consequences, which are
compounded when these technologies are combined.
According to the film, social media is not beneficial to users. Yes, it benefits us in many ways, b
ut users are unaware of the negative aspects of social media. While most of us believe it is assi
sting us in meeting our needs, it is not. It persuades us to use our computer at all hours, minute
s, and seconds.
When people get home from work or school, instead of relaxing and bonding with family membe
rs, they open their Facebook and other social media accounts. Nowadays, using social media is
part of our everyday routine, which they have anticipated.
Without even realizing it, many people become addicted to social media. It piques our attention
and, simply by taking pictures or watching videos, it tracks all of the information and activities th
at users engage in without their knowledge or consent. The Social Dilemma also

2
demonstrates that since it became prominent, the percentage of teenagers committing suicide h
as increased. It's alarming because the percentage of children aged 10 to 14 years old is higher
than that of children aged 18 years old. Owing to a lack of socialization, teenagers become depr
essed and anxious. Instead of playing outdoors, take a trip with your friends or relatives. Teenag
ers are relegated to their rooms.
Teenagers' reliance on social media is one reason they commit suicide. They simply depend on
the Facebook post whenever they face any problems. They are just exacerbating the issue.

The dissemination of false news is another alarming scenario depicted in the film. It is a sad fact
that fake news spreads six times faster than true news. People nowadays are perplexed as to w
hich news they can believe. One piece of fake news can start a war, and this is the biggest issu
e of using social media. In this time of pandemic, there is a wide range of fake news circulating
on social media such as fake drugs, false facts, and Covid reports that has a
fake number of patients.
Even though there are many disadvantages of using social media, it is still appropriate to do so.
Since there are so many advantages of using it. It will give you what you are looking for with just
one click or touch to the screen. Especially in this time of pandemic,
we need to keep in touch with our relatives to keep each other informed about the situation in th
at specific area.

Section D. Summary

The film starts with an introduction to the various interviewees, who each list the
companies for which they previously worked and their position within each. The importance of a
small group of engineers making decisions that affect billions of people is highlighted in the film.
The film explores the current state of social media networks, concentrating on industry issues in
particular.
Films like "The Social Dilemma" teach us to be mindful of our social media behavior. It says that
we can use social media as little as possible. Since we would find it more difficult to stop using s
ocial media if we become addicted to it. The majority of people have no idea what kind of risk th
ey are taking by using social media. Our mental as well as our physical health is affected. Many
people just know how to use social media and have no idea what is going on behind the scenes.
The user must exercise self-control. They must also be aware of the advantages and disadvant
ages of using social media. So that any negative consequences in the future can be avoided.
The film provides insight into how social media platforms manipulate their customers to become

3
addicted to their services, as well as the psychology that is used to make that possible.
According to the film, this often leads to increased depression and suicide rates among
teenagers and young adults. The film also discusses how user behavior on online platforms are
controlled, tracked, assessed, and registered. If these issues worsen, which is not impossible to
happen,
Engineers and the creators of social media must demolish what they have created. To save the
earth and the future. They started it, and they have the power to stop it.
