DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a standard for transmitting medical imaging information
between devices. It includes a file format definition and a network communications protocol. enCORE's DICOM
Conformance Statement defines which DICOM classes it supports:
http://www.gehealthcare.com/usen/interoperability/dicom/products/boneden_dicom.html
There are seven DICOM services that are supported by the enCORE DICOM software. Store, Storage Commitment,
Modality Worklist, Modality Performed Procedure Step, Print, Query/Retrieve, and Verification. Store, Storage
Commitment, and Print are handled by the Lunar DICOM application. Modality Worklist, Modality Performed Procedure
Step, and Query/Retrieve are handled by the enCORE application.
enCORE is an SCU (Service Class User) for all services it supports. The PACS and RIS/HIS are the SCP (Service Class
Provider).
Hardware Requirements
The customer is expected to have the necessary network/ PACS/RIS/HIS infrastructure to utilize the enCORE DICOM
software.
• enCORE DICOM Store, Print, and Query/Retrieve features requires a networked, DICOM compliant, PACS.
DICOM Print requires a radiographic film printer.
• enCORE DICOM Worklist feature , requires a DICOM compliant Radiology or Hospital Information Server. In
some cases, the customer may need a PACS broker to convert the Information Server protocols into DICOM
Standard protocols before the Information Server can deliver patient information to the enCORE DICOM
program.
• The customer PACS administrator is expected to review the enCORE DICOM Conformance Statement
document to determine the compatibility of the enCORE DICOM components with the existing equipment.
• The customer PACS administrator must prepare the network connection and supply the AE Title, the IP
address, and the port number needed to communicate with their PACS or Information Server.
• The customer PACS administrator or IT personnel must be present during enCORE DICOM setup and
testing.
The DICOM Store service is used to send images or reports to a PACS. DICOM store is handled by the Lunar DICOM
application. This application is designed as two separate processes, Lunar DICOM and DICOM Queue. The Lunar
DICOM process automatically detects when new images are ready to send to the PACS. The DICOM Queue process
manages the queue of all store jobs, and sends the jobs on to the appropriate remote device. When enCORE software is
installed on your computer, the enCORE installation program will also install a Lunar Image Plus Printer driver into your
printers folder. Do not delete this driver.
Note: If you purchase the DICOM option for an existing system, rerun the installation program and enter the updated
feature code to install the Lunar DICOM application.
The Lunar DICOM program should be started from the computer Desktop icon before starting the
enCORE program. Double click the Lunar DICOM icon to open the two windows of the program.
Note: Lunar DICOM and DICOM Queue must be running in order for images created by the enCORE application
to reach the PACS.
Two program bars will be seen in the taskbar of the desktop screen. Both the Lunar DICOM and the DICOM
Queue processes are running.
The DICOM Store feature allows you to send a variety of images or reports to the PACS system. enCORE
DICOM Store option converts the bone density report or image into a DICOM file format before pushing it out to
the customer's PACS.
An Accession number is a database record identifier used to identify a patient study. If the customer desires to
have an accession number associated with the DICOM report, the number must appear in the enCORE Edit
Information screen of the exam. Select the Secondary information tab and assign Exam ID with the appropriate
accession number.
To send an image to DICOM storage, the user presses the Report button within enCORE after opening an exam.
It is strongly recommended that you acquire scans using OneVision in order to save all scans and reports as one
exam folder.

As the report is sent, a progress indicator will appear briefly. The DICOM Queue window will provide the status of
the job.
Halt
The user can halt or resume queue processing in the lower right corner of the DICOM Queue window.
Delete
The user can delete jobs manually from a halted queue.
In the DICOM Queue select File / Delete...
At the top of the DICOM Queue window, select Nodes/ Edit Node List.
Click on Save.
From the DICOM Queue menu select Nodes/Edit Node List. Select the SCP from the list, you
wish to test from.
Click the Test button.
Click on the Get Status From Node button that appears on the right side of the screen.
A Popup window will indicate the status of the connection to the PACS server. A
message box will indicate one of the following:
• The server is not available.
• The remote node responded normally.
The PACS must also be configured to accept information from Lunar DICOM's AE
title and TCP/IP address and port number.
Click on File /Report Folder Setup to open the Report Transfer Installation Settings dialog.
• Show Report Status at Startup. This option will prompt the user if the last DICOM job was
not sent and remains in the DICOM Queue.
• Report Folder Location is a temporary location for enCORE *.tif files before they are
pushed out as *.dcm files. Click on the Browse button to view or change the location of
these files.
• Report Node should display the current destination name of the remote node(s). If the
correct destination node is not visible, click on the Change Node button.
• Report Transfers feature provides the option to send transfers manually. The default is to
Automatically check for new reports. The frequency of the automatic check can be edited
by entering in the desired polling rate.
• Emergency clear for semaphore flags. A semaphore is a variable with a value that
indicates the status of a common resource. It is used to lock the resource that is being used.
Lunar DICOM and enCORE use semaphores ( in the form text files ) to signal each other
when either application is busy. enCORE creates a semaphore file during acquisition to lock
out any DICOM store requests. Lunar DICOM creates a semaphore file during image
storage to lock out any image acquisitions. Normally these files will be automatically deleted
when the application is finished performing its process. The semaphore emergency clear
button in Lunar DICOM can be used if the semaphore is not cleared properly. This could
happen if there is an error during a semaphore deletion attempt or user reboots in middle of
a process.
The enCORE application allows the user to configure the type of images or reports that will be sent
to DICOM storage. Access the configuration settings through Tools/Connectivity Options.
2.3.1. Store Image option will send the scan image only. Include ROIs option will draw ROIs on the
image.
2.3.2. Include XML tags checkbox will add all the DXA results to the image comments tag (0020, 4000) within
the DICOM file in XML format. These values can be used by custom reporting software.
2.3.3. Update UID when reanalyze. Every time you send a new report or image to PACS a unique identifier or
UID is sent along in the DICOM file. If you resend the same report or image to PACS, the second set may
overwrite the first set on the server or be rejected by the server. To avoid data loss when more than one analysis
has taken place, check the Update UID option.
2.3.4. Store Structured Report option requires that the PACS is capable of receiving DICOM SR data. DICOM
SR documents contain hierarchically structured content of DXA results. The PACS DICOM viewer must be
capable of displaying Enhanced SR to properly display the structured report.
2.3.5. Store report option will send any reports that are selected in the Report Center. Reports can be
sent in either Secondary Capture or Encapsulated PDF DICOM format.
2.3.6. Store Report graphics only selection will send a DICOM image for each image on the report. All report
images can also be sent as one DICOM image with the Compress report graphics into a single DICOM image
option. The user also has control over the height and width of the images.
2.3.7. Restrict IP Type to IPv4 option should be checked if IPv6 addresses for SCP providers are not used. If
IPv6 support is required, uncheck this option. Some older SCP providers with an IPv4 address will not function
appropriately with this unchecked. This will change both Lunar DICOM and enCORE settings.
Note: Increasing the size of a DICOM image will also increase the file size that is sent.
enCORE image files can be Archived in a standard DICOM format to PACS as part of the DICOM Store process.
5. Select the correct DICOM Archive Node from the drop-down menu.
DICOM Archive to PACS is a "Copy" of the original image. The original image is left in the enCORE database.
DICOM Archive is labeled as; DICOM (Copy) : Node name in Directory.
Note: The Node list is pulled from the DICOM Store setup.
The DICOM Query/Retrieve service allows an enCORE workstation to query the PACS for a list of enCORE
exams previously archived to PACS and retrieve them.
3. Fill in the additional information in section B to enable Query/Retrieve scans from PACS .
Store

4. Click Next to view the Image list. Select the specific image to be retrieved.
After retrieving a DICOM file, enCORE will extract the scan data and restore the scan into the enCORE system
in its native format.
Note: If the exam being retrieved is not a new version of the exam, but is the same version or earlier version than
already resides in the local database, no retrieval takes place.
DICOM Q/R is also possible by a right-click on the Patient or Exam List in the Directory screen:
The DICOM Worklist service allows enCORE to obtain details of patients and scheduled exams from a RIS/HIS system,
avoiding the need to enter such information multiple times.
The enCORE DICOM Worklist feature is part of the enCORE program. After DICOM Worklist is
configured, it will pull the patients who have been entered into the HIS/RIS and are scheduled for a
bone density exam when the Measure tool is selected. The requirements and configuration details
are covered within this chapter.
The enCORE application allows the user to configure the matching key attributes which are used to
determine whether an entity matches the query. A single default query if provided, Today’s Patients,
which specifies all patients scheduled to be scanned with today's date and scheduled as an OT modality.
Click on the Add button. The right side of the button is a quick link to select an existing query
from an existing template.
Date queries support range of date matching. Name queries support wildcard matching ( i.e. "W* ). All other
queries support single value matching only. If a query is setup using Patient Name, Patient ID, or Accession
Number, you will be prompted to type in a specific value when you query for the Worklist.
Highlight your new Query and click on the Save button to make this query the new default.
The Worklist is provided by a RIS/HIS. To configure the Worklist SCP, select Tools/Connectivity
Options/DICOM tab.
Click on the Configure Connections button.
Click Add in the Worklist SCP Settings section to add a new Worklist SCP. The AE Title, Name, TCP/IP Address
and Port # must always be supplied by the customer's IT department. Note: The AE Title is case sensitive.
The SCP Settings dialog allows the user to enter a name, AE title, TCP/IP address and port number for the
remote DICOM worklist SCP (HIS/RIS).
The DICOM Verification service is used to test communications between enCORE and the RIS/HIS. Click the
DICOM Echo Test button in the Worklist SCP Settings dialog.
The customer HIS/ RIS may use a specific coding standard to identify procedures or specify patient attributes.
For example; the server may use the code bd0010 for an AP Spine scan. These codes need to be "mapped" to
the enCORE program so that enCORE can exchange information correctly with the SCP. The list of modality
worklist query return key attributes is configurable. This specifies which DICOM attributes, in addition to the
matching key attributes are to be returned by the SCP.
Select an attribute to map or uncheck attributes that are not used by the SCP.
To map an attribute, highlight the attribute and click on the Map HIS Codes button at the bottom of the screen.
The attributes and mappings are stored in the ProtocolQuery.xml file in the enCORE Config folder.
The DICOM Modality Performed Procedure Step (MPPS) service is used to indicate that a procedure has been
performed. The MPPS message indicates to the PACS or RIS/HIS when a DXA exam is started and when it is
completed.
When an exam is completed, the RIS/HIS may remove the scheduled procedure from the DICOM Worklist.
MPPS is not supported by all HIS/RIS systems. Therefore, the MPPS SCP settings should only be filled in if
HIS/RIS supports this feature.
Click Add in the MPPS SCP Settings section to add a new MPPS SCP. The AE Title, Name, TCP/IP Address
and Port # must always be supplied by the customer's IT department. Note: The AE Title is case sensitive.
The SCP Settings dialog allows the user to enter a name, AE title, TCP/IP address and port number for the
remote DICOM MPPS SCP (PACS or HIS/RIS).
The DICOM Verification service is used to test communications between enCORE and the MPPS SCP. Click
the DICOM Echo Test button in the MPPS SCP Settings dialog.
The list of MPPS
attributes is configurable. This specifies which DICOM MPPS attributes are sent to the SCP.
Select an attribute to map or uncheck attributes that are not used by the SCP.
These are the attributes that will be sent to the SCP in the MPPS N-CREATE message when an exam is started.
These are the attributes that will be sent to the SCP in the MPPS N-SET message when an exam is completed.
To map an attribute, highlight the attribute and click on the Map HIS Codes button at the bottom of the screen.
The attributes and mappings are stored in the ProtocolQuery.xml file in the enCORE Config folder.
The DICOM Print service is used to send images to a DICOM printer A film printer is required.
The enCORE application allows the user to configure if they want to send an image to a DICOM printer. Access the
configuration through Tools/Connectivity Options/ DICOM tab.
Place a check in the Send image to DICOM printer to enable the DICOM print feature.
The print folder may be reconfigured to hold the image file where needed. The default location is: D:\Program
Files\LUNAR\DICOM\LunarImages
When printing images from enCORE, the scan ROIs can be included or excluded.
To include ROIs on the scan image, check the Include ROIs checkbox.
The Image DPI is configurable. This should be changed to match the requirements of the film printer. Note:
Increasing the DPI will also increase the image file size.
DICOM print is handled by the Lunar DICOM application. The Lunar DICOM process is used to open an image and send
it to a DICOM printer. The DICOM Queue process manages the queue of all print jobs and sends the jobs on to the
appropriate remote device.
1. From the DICOM Queue menu, you can configure the remote print SCP.
Select Printers/Edit Printer List to open the DICOM Printer dialog.
The Printer Information dialog allows you user to enter a name, AE title, TCP/IP address and port number for the
remote DICOM printer. The TCP/IP address is often in dotted quad notation. If the customer site is running DNS,
a user friendly name can be assigned to the store node instead.
The Printer Test dialog allows the user to test communications with a print SCP or send a test ramp image to the SCP.
2. Click on the Get Printer Status button to verify the connection with the film printer.
If there is a connection with the printer, the status will be reported as "Normal". If the connection is not made, a
warning message will appear in a pop-up window.
3. Enter the desired printer test options for image gamma and print size.
The DICOM Queue process manages the queue of all print jobs and sends the jobs on to the appropriate
remote device.
7. Click on the film printer button located in the right display window. A message above the button will
confirm it was "sent to printer".
8. The process may be monitored from the DICOM queue window. DICOM queue processes sequentially
through all jobs, logging errors or completion status in the Job Status field. The user can halt or resume
queue processing and delete entries from a halted queue.
You can preview DICOM images before sending them to the DICOM printer. Set the Transfer option to Manual to use the
viewer. Select File / Report Folder Setup to configure the transfer options.
4. Click on the film printer button located in the right display window. A message above the button will
confirm it was "sent to printer".

The Image file (s) that fail. Retrieve either the *.tif or *.dcm file. A *.tif file is found in
the D:\Program Files\LUNAR\DICOM\ Reports folder and a *.dcm file is retrieved
from the PACS server.
The PACS server log in ASCII format if possible. enCORE does not have access to
the SCP log file. The customer's PACS administrator is needed to review this
information.
The file “MergeStore.log” is located in the directory where Lunar DICOM was installed to.
By default it will be installed at D:\Program Files\LUNAR\DICOM\Config The MergeStore.log contains
error information for failed jobs.
E. Other Errors
If there are unsent reports still in the Queue as you start DICOM, a window providing several
options will appear.
Send Manually Later will continue to hold the message in the Queue.
The Change Destination button will open a window to select a new destination node.
Send Reports Now will resend the pending job.
Important: Leaving unsent messages in the Queue will continue to utilize system resources.
A warning is generated if DICOM images remain in the Reports Folder as the DICOM program
closes.
If an attempt is made to close the DICOM program while there are still unsent jobs in the Queue,
you will receive the above message. Press DELETE to remove these reports or RETRY to save
them for retry later.
