LESSON 3: The Self as Cognitive Construct


Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:


 Identify the different ideas in psychology about the “self”;
 Create your own definition of the “self” based on the definitions from
psychology; and
 Analyze the effects of various factors identified in psychology in the
formation of the “self”.

Instruction: This activity has two parts that try to compare how we look at ourselves
against how people perceive us.
UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

For the first part, list ten to fifteen (10-15) qualities or things that you think define who
you are around the human figure representing you.

For the second part. Choose one of your classmates (preferably not your close
friend) to list also ten to fifteen (10-15) qualities of yours that they think represent
your whole personality.
