What are the instructions for internal installation

First: Afaq DSL Shamel components

Your DSL line consists of two parts: The STC line from the network to the STB
/ Protection Point, while the second part is your line from the STB / Protection
point to your modem.

STC will continuously work to ensure that the line is well maintained. This guide
will help you maintain the part of the line you are responsible for.
You must also provide the following:

PC with a network card

DSL modem
Splitter

Phone Jack
Electrical

Socket
tion point for
internal phone
cables)

Computer
Splitter
Modem

Telephone

Note: STC will send an SMS to your Jawal with username and password of
Afaq DSL Shame service.

4
Second: What does an STB / Protection Point mean

STB / Protection Points are either mounted outside the house or the building.
They have one set of contacts from the STC line which are parallel to the con-
tacts of your line. When you install your line to the STB / Protection Point, you
must always ensure that:

The wire should be firmly terminated to the contacts

Contacts should be clean
STB / Protection Point cover should be kept closed after installation

Ensure the STB cover is on properly.

If STB / Protection Point does not have a cover or it is damaged, please call
Customer Service 907.

Open STB will expose your line and other lines to oxidation and wearing.

5
Third: How do I connect to the protection point

The cable used for your line from the STB / Protection point must be of the
right size and quality. The cable should be of the same quality as a telephone
line; twisted pair cable (CAT.5 or CAT.6) with a strong outer sheath to protect it
from damage.

The diameter of the wire (gauge) should be 0.4 mm or 0.5 mm. Only one pair of
wires should be connected to each terminal, and any extra wires should be cut
off. We recommend the use of the orange + white pair when using CAT.5.

Use only 0.4 mm or 0.5 mm telephone twisted pair cable (CAT.5 or CAT.6)
DO NOT connect more than one pair to each contact
DO NOT use standard electrical cable or bell wire
Use one pair: orange + white

Direct connection
without fraying or
overlapping

Don’t connect more

than one pair

6
Fourth: How would I check the quality of my internal wiring

The cable from the protection point to the socket in your home should be kept
as short as possible and secured to the wall. The correct size and type of wire
fastners should be used in order to secure cable in place. Furthermore, this
cable should be kept away from other electrical cables in order to prevent
noise. The length of the outside cable should be kept to a minimum and placed
in the shade as much as possible. If possible, outside cables should be buried
to keep them cool and prevent noise and signal loss. High temperatures causes
the resistance of the wire to increase and degrade your DSL signal.

Keep all cable lengths short

Keep away from electrical cables (at least 30 cm clearance)
Secure cables to the wall with correct fasteners
Keep outside cables in the shade if possible, or lay underground
Terminate the line using a wall-mounted phone jack or splitter at the first point
where it enters the house

Modem & Splitter Installation are the most important
steps to activate the service
Please follow the instructions below for splitter and modem installation.
Note: Splitter should be installed at the first point in the house where all phone
wires are, or a direct cable from the distribution point to the splitter before the
PBX (if available).

Note: All devices such as fax machines, caller ID boxes, or telephones that con-
nect to a DSL phone line require a DSL line Splitter, which prevents noise from
disrupting the DSL signal on the phone line.

9
What do the Modem Light indicators mean
After you have plugged your modem into an electrical socket, checked your
setup and DSL line Splitter, you should look at the light indicatiors on the front
panel of the modem to check your connection status.
When powering up the modem, all lights will be green for approximately 30 sec-
onds. Observing the “Power” light, make sure that the power self-test completes
successfully and the light turns to a steady green.
Make sure that the modem is synchronized with ADSL line card at the STC
end of the circuit by checking the “DSL” light. It may take up to 70 seconds for
the modem to synchronize, at which point the “DSL” light will turn to a steady
green.
Verify that the modem is properly wired to your computer's Network Interface
Card (NIC) by checking that the “Ethernet” light is a steady green.

The following table explains what the lights on the front panel of a typical modem
indicate. This chart is only a general guide, for exact information use your modem
user guide.

Troubleshooting for Afaq DSL
1- No DSL connection
*Check the connection from the phone jack to the splitter and from the splitter
to the modem.
*The connections from the splitter should be:
Line >>> Phone jack
Phone >>>Telephone
Modem (or DSL) >>> ADSL (Modem)
Ensure the modem power is connected and the power light is steady green
Reset the modem by powering down and after 15 seconds powering on
Check modem configuration settings (see table below) – this requires you to
access the modem setup information which will be explained in your modem
manual.
Modern configuration Value or Setting

Encapsulation PPPoE

Multiplexing method LLC

VPI 0
VCI 35
QoS UBR

2- No Internet connection
Check the connection from the modem to your PC – if you are using wireless,
try connecting to the modem using an Ethernet cable.
The Ethernet connection should show a green light both on the modem and on
the PC if it is working correctly.
Reset the modem by powering down and after 15 seconds powering on.
Confirm that you have entered the correct username and password into the
modem for log-on to your IP account and that this account has not expired.

12
Troubleshooting For Afaq DSL
Check your Browser settings on the PC (see table below)

Browser configuration Setting

Proxy setting No Proxy

LAN setting Auto-detect

IP Address Obtain automatically

DNS server Obtain automatically

3- Intermittent (DSL)
This can be confirmed by watching the DSL light on your modem – it will
change from green to either no light or amber and then back to green.
Check that your modem power supply and other cables are securely installed.
Ensure that the modem and wiring are not close to sources of electrical interfer-
ence (see table below).
Poor wiring or electrical joints together with heat or movement in the connec-
tion from the protection point will degrade your DSL signal – ensure the wiring
guidelines mentioned in this booklet are applied.

Source of electrical interference

Microwave Oven
Cordless and Mobile phones
Air conditioning
Television set
Hair-dryer

4- Slow browsing
It is possible to confuse slow browsing with an intermittent DSL connection so
always check section 3 first.

13
Troubleshooting For Afaq DSL
Slow browsing is seen as either a delay in opening a web-page or the slow
download of files – sometimes these problems, which can occur in the
Kingdom or in the International network, are more noticeable at certain times of
the day when internet traffic is high.
Check your local connection speed by visiting: “speedtest.net” and selecting
the city nearest to your location – if you obtain a download speed that is near
to your service speed (e.g. a 512K service should give a result above 400K
depending upon time of day) then the problem is probably due to the interna-
tional network or server being busy.
If your download speed is below than expected then contact your Internet
service provider.
Remember that file downloads are measured in “Bytes” and you need to multi-
ply x8 to get to the equivalent service speed which is measured in “bits”.
For example: 60KBytes per second = 480Kbits per second

5- Noisy line
Check that the phone line is provided via a splitter (recommended).
Ensure that the phone is connected into the “Phone” connection on the splitter.
If a splitter is in use disconnect the modem and if the noise disappears, then
the splitter may be faulty.
Noise can also be caused by electrical interference or a faulty cordless phone.
Ensure noisy appliances are turned off and check the line using a standard
phone connected by a cord.

Note: the information above are summarized instructions, for more detailed
information please refer to the the modem user guide.
