CONTENT FOCUS

CHAPTER I -RESEARCH POSTER

❖ What is a Research Poster?

Posters are widely used in the academic community, and most

conferences include poster presentations in their program. Research
posters summarize information or research concisely and attractively
to help publicize it and generate discussion.

The poster is usually a mixture of a brief text mixed with tables,

graphs, pictures, and other presentation formats. At a conference, the
researcher stands by the poster display while other participants can
come and view the presentation and interact with the author.

❖ What is the purpose of poster?

The main function of a poster is to capture a moving audience with a

message. When designing a poster, plan its design carefully. You will
have a short amount of time to attract and hold your readers’
attention. Think about the one aspect of the information that must
convey the message and plan your design around that.

After you determine the most important information, think about the
imagery that will best convey your message visually. Should you use
on large image, or have several small interesting shapes? Would
bright colors evoke the mood or emotion that you want? Should some
of the words be in very large type to be easily read?

It is also important to know what type of format will be used. What

size will the poster be? How big or small? That will help you with the
placement of imagery and text.

Also consider where the poster will be displayed and what size and
shape it should be. Explore alternatives with thumbnails to find the
most effective and dynamic visual imagery. Eliminate any superfluous
detail. Work out the right size and placement for everything on the
poster. Because you are usually working on a large scale, pay careful
attention to balance and proportion.

❖ A poster should:

✓ Have type large enough to be viewed to 10-15 times your format

width.

✓ Have a simple and clear layout so your reader knows where to

find the information.
✓ Include all important information such as date, time, location,
contact name and telephone number.
✓ Have a dominate elements such as a headline or image that will
quickly catch your reader's eye.
✓ Have the most important message emphasized by size, color, or
value.
✓ Have art that is related to the message.
✓ Have the type and imagery arranged in a logical, functional
sequence.
✓ Have bold, intense colors to enhance your message so that it
can be easily seen from a distance.

❖ Tips on how to make your scientific posters stand out

Scientific poster sessions are a great opportunity for graduate

students and young researchers to show off their recent work to a
wide group of people, including senior scientists. The biggest problem
with these sessions is that they tend to have vast numbers of posters
and people all vying for attention.
What can you do to make your poster draw the attention of busy, and
quite possibly exhausted, researchers above the others?

✓ Engaging from afar

The subject of your poster should be clear from 3 meters away,

and images should be clear from 1.5 meters away. Passers-by
won’t stop at your poster if they can’t see what your poster is
about, and if no elements stand out to them.

✓ Big, clear images and figures

First, don’t try and put in too many figures or images. Only use
those that show the critical data from which you have extrapolated
your main conclusions. Second, make sure that each one is large
enough to be clear. Try to use a decent sized eye-catching image
from your experiment to grab attention from a distance. All images
and figures need to have a title and an explanation in an
appropriate location on the poster (so it is obvious which image
you are talking about).
Graphs should show any relationships between data as clearly as
possible. They need to have clear axes labels, titles and plot lines.

✓ Ensure there is a balance

There needs to be a balance of text and figures/images across the

poster to keep the audience engaged throughout. Avoid creating a
poster with text on one side and images on the other, as this
means the reader has a lot of text to take in at once.

✓ Split the layout into columns

Columns make the lines shorter and, therefore, easier to read.

Additionally, they add vertical lines to the layout, which helps
when aligning other elements. (They don’t necessarily have to be
the same width throughout the poster.) They also make your
poster easy to follow, as the order of information is clearer to see.

6|P age
ROMMEL G. PERALTA, CAFE Faculty, Agriculture Department
QUIRINO STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
…setting trend towards sustainable development

✓ Consider where the most important findings and figures

should be on the poster

Don’t bury your conclusions and key figures at the bottom of the
page. Most English-speaking people instinctually look at the top
left of a page and work towards the bottom right. Therefore, you
need to put your key findings at the top and they should stand out.
For example, add dark background and light font colors especially
for this section.

✓ Use big font sizes and different font types

A font size between 36-44 is ideal for titles and headings, and a
font larger than 22 should be used for the body text. A sans-serif
font is best used for headings. They are easier to read from a
distance and should be large enough to make spotting keywords
easy from a few meters away. When printed, large blocks of text
are easier to read in serif fonts and are the best choice for the body
text. Be careful not to use too many different fonts or font sizes as
this will look messy.

✓ Justify columns of text to the left

Full justification of columns may make the poster look neat, but it
will make the text harder to understand. The inconsistency of
spaces between the words creates an awkward reading experience.

✓ Make intelligent use of white space

With scientific posters, it is very tempting to put in loads of

information and use up every possible space. This will lead to a
confusing, cluttered and difficult to read poster that passers-by are
likely to walk straight past.
Effective use of white space will make the poster a pleasure to
read. It will lead the eye from one element to the next, in the order
intended. It should also make the reader aware of related elements
on the page.
The internet has vast amounts of information on how to use white
space like a professional designer.

✓ Use a clean and light color palette to make it easier to read

7|P age
ROMMEL G. PERALTA, CAFE Faculty, Agriculture Department
QUIRINO STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
…setting trend towards sustainable development

The majority of your background colors should be light, neutral

colors. This will create a greater contrast with your text, which
should generally be black. It also means that when you do use
bolder colors it will be obvious that this is an important part of the
poster. Textured or picture backgrounds should never be used.
They won’t add any new or necessary information to your poster
and will serve as a distraction to the science.

✓ Limit your word count to 1,000 word

A useful rule for minimizing text is to have a maximum word count of

1,000, including figure legends. Spread out well across a large poster
this number gives a good balance between being able to explain the
research and leaving room for figures and white space.

✓ The title should create intrigue

The title is the most important piece of text on the poster. If your
poster is the explanation of a single research paper, then don’t use
the same title (unless it happens to be snappy and to the point –
unlike most). The title should be short, contain as many keywords as
possible and encourage the reader to look further into the research.
Don’t give everything away in the title; create a reason for them to
come closer and read more.

✓ Use Illustrations to explain difficult concepts

It is often easier and clearer to explain a difficult concept with a well

annotated illustration or cartoon. Using text can lead to a long-winded
and overly complicated description, leading to confusion and
misunderstanding. It should also lead to a more pleasing design by
removing unnecessary chunks of texts.

✓ Get feedback

To make sure that you are confident that your poster clearly conveys
your research and is eye-catching to passers-by, show it to your
colleagues, and even researchers in another department. Their honest
feedback will ensure your poster is both appealing and clear.
Stick to these rules and you will have a visually appealing poster that
is easy to follow and understand. Clear images and important
keywords in the headlines will help attendees notice your poster from
afar and extract people from the crowd who are excited about what
you have to show them. Combined with a great abstract for the
program, and a well-practiced talk about your findings, this should
lead to a successful poster session.

❖ Tips for presenting your scientific poster

Presenting a poster at a conference for the first time can be a

daunting prospect. The small audience (potentially just one person)
can interrupt, ask questions and grill you about your research
without too much effort. However, it is a great way to gain feedback
and interact with scientists, and it can be a real confidence boost
when others are interested in your research.
✓ Be welcoming

You should do your best to stand at your poster for the entirety of
the session. To make everyone feel welcome stand to the side of the
poster, making it easy for your potential audience to move closer
and see the whole thing.

Smile and say hello to everyone who walks past and looks at you or
your poster. Invite them to read more and, if they seem interested,
ask if they would like you to talk them through it or if they have
any questions.

As you talk through your poster, point to relevant parts of the

poster so that people can follow your talk. Try not to put your
hands in your pockets or behind your back.

If you are already talking to someone or a small group and

someone else walks up, acknowledge them by making eye contact
with them and smiling. Once you have finished with your initial
visitors ask the newcomer if there was anything they missed that
they would like a further explanation of, or whether they have any
questions.

If someone is particularly interested in your poster and wants to

know all the details of your research, it may be better to suggest
meeting them for a coffee after the poster session. This will ensure
that other potential audience members don’t get bored and wander
off without talking to you because they have been waiting too long.

The most important aspect of presenting a poster at a conference is

to make the most out of the opportunity you’ve been given. Who
knows what might become of an interaction that you have in front
of that notice board?

✓ The “elevator” pitch

9|P age
ROMMEL G. PERALTA, CAFE Faculty, Agriculture Department
QUIRINO STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
…setting trend towards sustainable development

First impressions really count in poster presentations. To pique the

interest of your potential audience you should have a very short
synopsis (maximum three sentences and no longer than two
minutes) of your research prepared which contains three vital bits
of information:

1. What is your research topic?

2. What have you found?
3. Why is that important?

The aim here is to get your audience hooked and wanting further
details. Keep the bigger picture in mind, as the audience first
needs the background info to then get excited about the small
details. Make sure your pitch is punchy, intriguing and relevant.
✓ Creating a story

Once you’ve reeled in your audience and they are eager to learn
more, it’s time to build the narrative of your research. Like all great
stories your research needs a beginning, a middle and an end. Aim
for this to be 10 minutes long, or less.
The introduction should set the scene and introduce the main
characters:
1. What is the necessary background information about your
research topic that the audience must know?
2. How did this lead you to your research question, what were you
hoping to find out and why?
3. Who are the main characters (e.g. a disease, a drug, a cell type,
a brain region, a technique)? What are the relevant parts of
their “characteristics” to the story?

The middle section is the adventure; it answers:

1. How did you get from your research question to your

conclusion? Why did you choose to take that route?
2. What did you find on your way? Were there any interesting
twists?

The final section is the conclusion to the story:

1. What is the ultimate consequence of your journey? What does

this mean for your characters?
2. Is this really the end of the adventure or are there plenty more
adventures still to come? What might they look like?

Remember: You are the narrator; it is up to you as the story teller

to make the content both compelling and exciting. Attendees are

10 | P a g e

College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering

…setting trend towards sustainable development

not all experts in your field.; if you are unsure how familiar your
audience is with your subject area, ask them.

❖ Top tips for public speaking

✓ The importance of practice

Presenting your poster is ultimately a form of performance. In

performances, whether they involve acting, music, sport or
presenting, practice is a major factor in success. After all, however
much of a cliché it is: practice makes perfect. Rehearse what you
will say and practice presenting on your friends and family. Once
you begin speaking at your poster session you will be pleased that
you spent time preparing and practicing.
Before the poster session starts make sure that you:
1. Understand exactly what all the figures on the poster show, that
you can explain them fully and know their full implications.
2. Have your brief synopsis memorized
3. Know all the key points to your research story without referring
to written notes
4. Are ready to answer likely questions with confidence, and know
how to deal with difficult questions that you might not be able
to answer fully.

✓ Check the audience’s understanding

Ask members of the audience whether you have been clear or if

you should go into more detail, rather than asking if they
understand, as this could make them feel stupid or ignorant.
For example, say something like “Have I been clear enough” or
“should I go into more detail about……?” instead of “do you
understand how this works?”
✓ Dress for the occasion

While a full suit may be a little formal for poster session at most
scientific conferences, dressing in smart clothing is a good idea.
This may seem like an old-fashioned notion, but there are a couple
of good reasons for it:
1. It shows that you mean business and that you care. It gives the
appearance of someone who has made a thoughtful choice
about how to present themselves to make the most of the
opportunity they have been given and you are there to talk
about your research rather than have fun (which is totally
allowed at the same time by the way).

11 | P a g e
ROMMEL G. PERALTA, CAFE Faculty, Agriculture Department
QUIRINO STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
…setting trend towards sustainable development

2. Some people may take you less seriously if you are dressed in
overly casual clothing. It is less likely that people will feel the
same way if you dressed smartly (although a Tuxedo may cause
a few interesting looks).

So, what should you wear? The most common and seemingly
approved dress is to wear a traditional shirt or blouse with smart
trousers or a skirt. Additionally, it is advisable to wear smart
shoes, but make sure they are comfortable, as you may be
standing for some time.
✓ The handout

There are pros and cons to having a handout with additional

supporting materials or key information from your poster. You
must decide for yourself if it will be of benefit to you depending on
several factors including:
• What is the purpose of your poster?
• What are you hoping to achieve with your presentation?
• Will it enhance your audience’s engagement with your
research or not?

The major positive outcome of a handout is that gives your

audience something to take away with them to remind them about
you, your research and why they were interested in it. It also gives
them a way to get in touch with you should they have further
questions.
The main negative is that some people who may be interested and
could benefit from speaking to you about your poster will take the
leaflet, read it (or not) and never engage with your research again.
It is an easy way for them to avoid talking to you, for whatever
reason that may be.
If you decide to go ahead with a handout there are several items
that should be included:
• The project title
• Your name and affiliation
• Your professional email address (and phone number if your
happy for people to contact you that way)
• The key information from your poster (including a link to the
relevant paper if it has already been published.
• Any supporting materials not included on the poster that
may be of help.

✓ Dealing with feedback

It is important to welcome feedback, be prepared for discussion

and not to be too defensive in the face of criticism.

12 | P a g e
ROMMEL G. PERALTA, CAFE Faculty, Agriculture Department
QUIRINO STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
…setting trend towards sustainable development

If someone asks you a question or makes a comment that you

don’t think is relevant, ask them to explain the relevance of their
comment. They may have stumbled across something that you
haven’t thought of because of their fresh perspective on the topic,
or they might just not understand your research. Also, a negative
comment or question might not actually be a criticism, but a
genuine desire to understand why you’ve done something so they
can fully interpret the poster. It is unlikely that someone has
visited your poster to be vindictive, and if they have it is important
not to engage them, shrug off their comments and move on to the
next person who is genuinely interested.
Remember to thank the audience for listening and thank them for
their feedback. People who have visited your poster could
potentially be employers or colleagues in the future.

Take-Action

Take-Action No. 1: Search for a published research article based

on your field of specialization and create a poster out of it.

Option 1:

Using PowerPoint

Direction: Change the size of your slide before working on the poster.
This will ensure that images and text do not blur. 24" by 36" and 36" by
48" are the most common sizes. (You may also search the internet for
other conference guidelines that you can follow.) Apply what you have
learned from the previous discussions such as the tips content and
purpose in creating scientific posters.

Resize the slide using PowerPoint 2016:

WINDOWS INSTRUCTIONS: Design tab >> Slide size >> Custom slide size

CHAPTER II- REVIEW PAPER AND RESEARCH CRITIQUE

❖ What goes into a review paper?

When writing a review paper your job is to present what is known about
a specific topic and to synthesize all the unconnected threads of the
individual studies into an integrated "State of the Science" type of review.
In your paper you will outline the overall picture of your topic area it is
currently understood by scientists in that field. Your paper should clearly
outline any problems that are currently being addressed, and explain the
basis of any conflicts that exist between experts in the field. If there are
important conflicts as a reviewer you are in a position to suggest which
side of the conflict has the weight of evidence supporting it and why. For
conflicts which, in your opinion, do not yet have a clear resolution, you
are also in a position to makes suggestions as to the types of experiments
need to be done to resolve those arguments.

❖ Writing a scientific review paper

✓ General points:
• Try to make your research paper an integrated synthesis of the
literature, rather than a jumbled regurgitation of facts.
• Give yourself enough time! For a 10-20-page paper it ideally
takes a month to carry out the library searches and to collect
the necessary materials (interlibrary loans etc).
• Start out with a clear idea of the question you are trying to
answer in the paper. Write it somewhere and show it to an
advisor to see if it makes sense, is "do-able" etc. In general, a
simple, specific idea is easier to research and to write about.
Equally it must be interesting and inclusive enough to ensure
there's enough material available to review.
• Get to know the library a.s.a.p.! Make sure you are familiar with
all the resources available to help you locate references. Using
the library well will save you hours of work and days of
frustration!
• Take notes, including full citations (authors' names, journal,
date and page number) from each paper as you read it. Use
index cards or a word processor. Index cards are nice in that
you can shuffle them around, color code ideas on them,
highlight etc. The advantage of using a word processor is that
you will later be able to use your notes to cut and paste
together the first draft, plus you'll have all your citations there
already which saves time when building your citation list.
Organize your notes. "Where did I read that?" is the plague of all
writers. The better organized your notes, the less this is a
problem.

18 | P a g e
ROMMEL G. PERALTA, CAFE Faculty, Agriculture Department
QUIRINO STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
…setting trend towards sustainable development

• Outline your paper before setting pen to paper for anything else!
This will help you to organize your thoughts and will markedly
improve the overall quality of your final product.
• Don't be afraid to write your ideas down before they are
perfectly formed. If you can get them down on paper, you can
place them in a logical sequence and develop them into a
flowing presentation later.
• Use the draft system: Write a first draft. Leave it for a day or
two. Come back to it and revise it as much as you can, then let
someone read it. Once they have read it, revise the paper again.
Respond to your reviewer's comments and also clarify any
passages that seemed to confuse them. Expect that your paper
will need revisions and don't feel bad when that turns out to be
true.
• Don't write in the first person (I think). This reduces your
credibility. Write with authority (It is, they do)

❖ Your review paper should have the following sections:

A. Title: As for a research paper, this should be short and inform

your reader of the major ideas that will be discussed.

B. Abstract: Again this should be written last and should

summarize the major points made within the body of your
paper.

C. Introduction: Your introduction should be short and concise

(ca. 1page) and is not given a separate heading from the body of
the paper. The purpose of the introduction is to introduce your
reader to the ideas that you will be addressing in the body of
your paper.

In your introduction you should be trying to bring readers from

different backgrounds up to speed with the "thesis" or objective
of your paper and explain to them why it is that this issue is
important. It is not a review of the field... that is what the body
of the paper is for! It is generally written after the body of the
paper is completed (so that you know where you've "gone"
intellectually in the paper and thus can effectively communicate
to your reader what to expect).

D. Body: In this portion of your paper you will outline the

background for your idea and begin to synthesize ideas from the
papers you've read in order to build a coherent "thesis". Before
you write this section, figure out what your perspective is going
to be (what are you trying to show?). Having done this, try to
present your ideas in such a way that they build your
discussion logically towards your goal. Outlines will be a big

19 | P a g e
ROMMEL G. PERALTA, CAFE Faculty, Agriculture Department
QUIRINO STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
…setting trend towards sustainable development

help to you at this stage. Frequently using headings (e.g.

History of the idea, Specific conflicts etc.) can help you to
systematically address each important point that you wish to
make, as well as helping your reader to follow your arguments.
Once you've developed your headings you can then go back and
place topic sentences for each paragraphs of information you
wish to convey under the appropriate heading. Each paragraph
should have clear, well thought out points, and should contain
only the information needed to make or support that point. Fill
in each paragraph with more details until you have a coherent
argument building towards your final, concluding statement.

E. Conclusion: Like the introduction, the conclusion section is not

usually separated from the body of the paper, although it can
be if it is really long. In this section you should restate the
objective(s) of your paper and point out how you have satisfied
these goals. It should also reiterate what the major conclusions
(ideas) of your study are.

F. Acknowledgements: Again this should include only people who

made considerable impact on your research... people with
whom you had fruitful discussions, a librarian who spent hours
with you trying to track down an elusive publication that was
key to your research etc.

G. Literature Cited: Here you report all the works you have cited
in your paper. The format for a references page varies by
discipline as does how you should cite your references within
the paper.

❖ Critiquing a research paper

A research critique is an analysis of a research undertaking that

focuses on its strengths and limitations. Critiquing is a systematic
process for evaluating research studies and the results reported. The
purpose of a research critique is to determine whether the findings are
usable for you (Brink & Wood, 2001, p. 57).

✓ Why Do a Research Critique?

• Not all published research is scientifically sound.

• Results may have little support for their validity and may reflect
a bias.

20 | P a g e
ROMMEL G. PERALTA, CAFE Faculty, Agriculture Department
QUIRINO STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
…setting trend towards sustainable development

✓ Four Key Aspects of Critique

1. Understanding the purpose and problem, while determining if

the design and methodology are consistent with the purpose.
2. Determining if the methodology is properly applied.
3. Assessing if outcomes and conclusions are believable and
supported by findings.
4. Reflecting on overall quality, strengths, and limitations.
(Holder, 2003)

✓ Research Critique Process

1. Read the research article or report in its entirety to get a sense

of the study and its contribution to knowledge development.
2. Read the article or report again, paying attention to the
questions appropriate to each stage of the critiquing process.
(Holder, 2003)

✓ Essential Elements in the Research Critique Process

“The necessary elements in a research critique can be compiled in

a series of questions for the process of critiquing research” (Boswell
& Cannon, 2009, p. 308).
Below are examples of questions that serve as a guide in critiquing
a research. Always put into account that critiquing a research
always focus in its strength and limitation. Thus, guide questions
depend upon how you want to critique the research.
• Source and Abstract Questions

o Source: How legitimate is the source (e.g., empirical

study from peer-reviewed journal versus article from
popular magazine)?
o Abstract: What is the major theme of the research
source? What is the study about?
The abstract provides a snapshot of the study. From
the snapshot, decide how relevant the source is for
your purposes, in terms of topic, population, and
methodology.

• Problem and Purpose Questions

o Problem: What is the research problem? What problem

existed (in the setting, in terms of a lack of research, a
need for further research, etc.) that the researcher(s)
attempted to address?
o Purpose: What was the purpose of the study? Is the
purpose clear? Was there a clear need for the study?
Will the study add to the body of literature in the field?

• Literature Review Questions

o Is the review comprehensive? That is, did the

researchers include the most relevant literature
regarding each of the study’s variables and
constructs?
o Are the sources current (within the last 5 years)
and/or seminal within the field?
o Are seminal publications reviewed?
o Are the majority of sources primary or secondary?
o Do the authors identify a guiding
theoretical/conceptual framework, and if so is it
clearly explained and linked to the study?
o Is it well organized and does it include an introduction
and a summary?

• Methodology Questions

o Research Questions: Did the authors offer any

research questions?
o If so, what were they? Are they clearly stated?
o Do they match the purpose of the study? Are all of the
research variables identified?
o Hypotheses: Do the researchers offer any hypotheses?
o If so, what were they? Are they clearly stated? Do they
match the purpose of the study?
o Participants: What was the target population for the
study? How were the participants selected? Who is
included? Who is excluded? How large is the sample?
o Instruments: What instruments or tools were used in
the study? Who developed the instruments or tools?
How valid and reliable are they? Do the instruments or
tools directly measure the variables of interest? Does
the researcher describe clearly how meaning or scores
are derived from the instruments?
o Research Design: What was the specific research
design used? How were the data collected? What were
the steps in the timeline? Are potential limitations
identified and addressed?
o Data Analysis: Were the data analysis strategies
appropriate for the study?

• Results

o Is each research question or hypothesis addressed?

o Are the findings clearly described?

• Discussion

o How do this study’s results fit into the broader

literature?
o What were the limitations of the study?
o Are recommendations made for practical application?
o Are recommendations made for further research?

CHAPTER III -CURRICULUM VITAE VS. RESUME

What is the difference between a resume and a CV? When should you
use a resume, and when is it better to use a curriculum vitae?
The primary differences between a resume and a curriculum vitae (CV)
are length, what is included, and what each is used for. While both are
used in job applications, a resume and a CV are not always
interchangeable.
❖ CV vs. Resume

Most resumes in the United States are competency-based: they are

personal marketing documents intended to showcase the candidate’s
skills, notable achievements, and work experience to the greatest
advantage.
U.S. curriculum vitae, submitted for jobs in academia, scientific
research, and medical fields, are credential-based, providing a
comprehensive (and often lengthy) listing of one’s education,
certifications, research experience, and professional affiliations and
memberships.

❖ What Is a Curriculum Vitae?

A curriculum vitae (CV) provides a summary of your experience and

skills. Typically, CVs for entry-

numerous publications tend to
run much longer.
CVs are lengthier than resumes and include more information,
particularly details related to one’s academic and research background.3
A curriculum vitae summary is a one-to-two-page, condensed version of
a full curriculum vitae. A CV summary is a way to quickly and concisely
convey one’s skills and qualifications. Sometimes large organizations will
initially ask for a one-page CV summary when they expect a large pool of
applicants.

There are also optional sections,
including a resume objective and a career summary statement.

A resume should be as concise as

possible. Typically, a resume is Tips: Resumes often include bulleted lists

❖ CV and Resume Writing Tips

Whether you are writing a CV or a resume, there are a few helpful

rules you should follow. It's important to show the hiring manager
how you are qualified for the job, what you have to offer the
organization, and why you'd be a terrific candidate to interview.

❖ Match your resume or CV to the position. This is most important

when writing a resume, but it applies to a CV too. Make sure that you
highlight your education, work experience, and skills as they relate to
the particular industry or job.

In a CV, for example, if you are applying for a job in education, you
might want to put your teaching experience at the top of your CV. In a
resume, you might include only the work experience that relates

directly to the job you’re applying for. You can also include keywords
from the job description in your resume or CV. This will show the
employer that you are an ideal fit for the position.

❖ Use a template. You may want to use a template to structure your

resume or CV. This will give your document a clear organization,
which will help the employer quickly see your qualifications and
experience.

❖ Proofread and edit. No matter whether you use a CV or resume, you

need to thoroughly edit your
