CONTENT OF THE MODULE

1. Thematic Unit 1 POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES - EXTENDED AND NUCLEAR FAMILY

1.1. Introduction
When we need to make a reference on the possession someone or something has,
possessive adjectives become quite a useful tool to give this information in a
different way.

These words have a direct link according to personal pronouns since each one of them
has a corresponding possessive adjective. Moreover, there’s also an alternate
option to talk about possessions by using saxons, in which nouns can be included.

1.2. Conceptual Framework

1.2.1. POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES/ SAXONS.
Possessive adjectives are a series of words that complete personal pronouns, in terms of
the possession someone or something can express. That’s why each pronoun has a
possessive adjective, as follows:
Basic English I
My daily routine

These are used before the noun, in order to get a first description in terms of possession.

On the other side, saxons become another alternative to show possession . They have a
main characteristic by being represented with the use of the apostrophe + s (‘s)
after the noun. We also need to take into account not to get confused with the
contractions usually done with the verb To Be in present tense as well as the
contraction for the auxiliary “has”, one of the representatives from the Present
Perfect tense. Saxon show that nouns possess the things mentioned after the ‘s.

When using saxons, it’s important to understand the different ways to be applied. Let’s
take a look on those options:

a. Noun + ‘s
b. When the owner (inside the sentence) goes along with more descriptive words, ‘s
must be placed after the very last word of this owner.
c. When using plurals, the apostrophe (´) must be written without using the “s” at
the end.
d. When the owner has an “s” at the end of the name, you must keep the final “s” + ‘s.

D. Her blind’s brother / Her’s blind brother / Her blind brother’s

1.5. Conclusions
This topic has showed you the way you can give information about the possession that
someone or something may have over a person, a thing, a place, etc. Remember
both ways are applicable according to the characteristic given previously. It’s
important to make sure on the way words are written and the idea you want to
give, in order to decide either possessive adjectives or saxons are the best for your
context.

2. Thematic unit 2 THERE IS/ THERE ARE. - BEDROOM / NEIGHBORHOOD

2.1. Introduction
The importance to talk about the existence of someone or something in a specific place
and/or time gives us the chance to include an important topic as There Is / There
Are in the learning of the English language. A link we can create in order for us to
talk about this kind of existence is at the time of making reference to the objects
from our bedroom, or the neighborhood we live in.

This topic will give you the opportunity to explore vocabulary and grammar focused on
the existence of people, objects, places, among others.

2.2. Conceptual Framework

THERE IS / THERE ARE
When the existence of someone or something needs to be added to a specific content,
“There is” and “There are” become the perfect tool to apply this existence besides
the possible quantity of them.

It’s important to know how to create sentences with these expressions, depending on the
singular or plural characteristics of the nouns mentioned in a sentence. Let’s take
a look at them:

It’s also necessary to have some knowledge related to vocabulary that can complement
the information on a possible amount of things we are mentioning. Take a look on
some of these:

3. Thematic unit 3 PRESENT SIMPLE (+/-/?)/ - DAILY ROUTINES

3.1. Introduction
We use simple present to talk about routines, preferences, likes and dislikes. Every single
activity we perform in a constant way becomes a routine; that means an
important space it has in the English language. Why? There’s a verbal tense
focused on the way to talk about repetitive actions: Present Simple.

Furthermore, we will also include information on WH Questions in order to ask for

specific facts about locations, reasons, people, processes, among others. Finally,
we will talk about Frequency Adverbs in which we can refer the amount of times
an action can be repeated.

As WH Questions are part of the vocabulary we need to learn, we will take a look on the
most important ones to be used in Present Simple later on in this module.
