STRENGTH OF MATERIALS - TASK 1. CHAPTER 3.

1. A 50 mm diameter solid steel shaft has a 30 mm hole extending over half of its length. Determine the angle
of twist of end A when a 1000 N-m torque is applied as shown. The shear modulus is 80 GPa.
Note: A counter-clockwise rotation is considered positive.

2. Solid aluminum ABC and Steel CDE shafts are bonded together at C. Three torques are applied to the shafts
at the locations indicated. Determine the angle of twist (in radians) at A knowing Gsteel = 80 GPa and Galum = 26
GPa.
Note: A counterclockwise rotation is positive.

3. Several torques are applied to the stepped shaft shown (G = 80 GPa). Neglect any stress concentrations
associated with the sudden change in cross-section. (a) Determine the maximum shear stress in the shaft.
(b) Determine the rotation of the end E relative to the end A.

4. In order to design a steel shaft (G=78 GPa), evaluate the following two options, solid circular bar shaft (a), or
tube (b) with wall thickness t=d2/10, as shown in the figure. The shaft must transmit a torque of 1200N-m.
The maximum allowable stress is 40MPa, and the maximum allowable angle of rotation is 0.75°.
5. The two thin bars of hard rubber shown in Figure have shear modulus G = 280 MPa and cross-sectional area
of 20 mm2. The bars are attached to a rigid disc of 20-mm radius. The rigid disc is observed to rotate about its
axis by an angle of 0.04 rad due to the applied torque Text. Determine the applied torque Text.

6. The steel shaft of a wrench is 8.0 mm in diameter and 200 mm long. If the permissible shear stress is 60 MPa.
a. What is the maximum allowable torque Tmax that can be exerted with the wrench?
b. What angle does the shaft rotate due to the action of the maximum torque? (I assume a G = 78 GPa)
Sol: T = 6.03 N.m, Ø = 0.03846 (2.20°)

7. A 40 mm diameter solid steel shaft ABCD is fixed between two walls. Rigid bar CE (90 mm long) is attached
to the shaft at C. Determine the torque required to cause end E of the bar to deflect 12 mm knowing that G =
80 GPa. Sol. T = 53,62 kN.m
8. A solid circular steel shaft (Gs = 12,000 ksi) of variable diameter is acted upon by torques as shown in Figure
5.25. The diameter of the shaft between wheels A and B and wheels C and D is 2 in., and the diameter of the
shaft between wheels B and C is 4 in. Determine:
(a) the rotation of wheel D with respect to wheel A;
(b) the magnitude of maximum torsional shear stress in the shaft;
(c) the shear stress at point E. Show it on a stress cube.

9. If T = 1500 N· m in Figure , determine (a) the magnitude of maximum torsional shear stress in cast iron and
copper; (b) the rotation of the section at D with respect to the section at A.

10. A steel rod (G = 80 GPa and diameter = 30 mm) is used to open and close a valve that cannot be directly
accessed. The valve requires a torque of 300 N-m to turn. The two supports that hold up the shaft also resist
the turning of the rod, each with a torque of 40 N-m. If the valve is to be turned by 90° what must be the
rotation at the actuator? Also, determine the maximum shear stress in the shaft. (L1 = 200 mm, L2 = 300 mm,
and L3 = 400 mm.)
