Ways to Achieve Coherence

1. Finding topic sentences

Topic Sentence composed of a subject and a predicate. The subject contains the
limited topic to be discussed while the predicate contains the controlling idea which is
the writers opinion or assertion about the limited topic.

2. Supporting Details

Supporting details are the specific or minor ideas that help develop the topic
sentence into a paragraph. Specific ideas or supporting details may be in the form of:
a. Examples or illustrations , for paragraph by example;
b. Facts, concepts, for paragraph by definition and by classification;
c. Statistics, opinions, reasons, for paragraph by persuasion;
d. Statistics, reasons, facts, empirical truths, for problem-solution
paragraph;
e. Picture words, like adjectives and adverbs, for paragraph by
description, comparison, or analogy; and
f. Experiences, events, and personal feelings or perceptions, for
paragraph by narration.
