UNIT-I:
 Explain in-detail various parts of a four wheeler automobile with the help of simple sketch.
 List various components of a chassis and give detailed classification of chassis with suitable
sketches.
 Differentiate between front wheel drive engines with rear wheel drive engines. List the
advantages and disadvantages of rear wheel drive and all wheel drive.
 Discuss the working of 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. Also list the differences between 2-
stroke and 4-stroke engines.
 Discuss the working of petrol and diesel engines. Also list the differences between petrol and
diesel engines.
 Classify the automobile engines in detail.
 Explain different methods of turbo-charging and super-charging. List out merits and demerits
of turbo-charging and super-charging
 What is crankcase ventilation? Explain positive crankcase ventilation system with a neat
sketch.
 Write short notes on (i) engine boring, (ii) de-carburization and (iii) nitriding
 Explain need of power unit in an automobile and how the power can be transmitted in (i) front
wheel drive and (ii) rear wheel drive by using neat schematic diagrams.
UNIT-II:
 Discuss the functions and working of a battery ignition system with the help of a neat sketch.
 Describe with a neat sketch of Magneto-ignition system of a four-cylinder engine. Compare
Battery ignition system with Magneto-ignition system.
 Discuss the working of auto transformer, contact breaker points, condenser and spark plug with
suitable skeetch
 Explain the electronic ignition systems used in modern cars. List out the merits and demerits of
electronic ignition systems over conventional ignition system.
 Explain the need and working of spark advance and retard mechanism with the help of neat
sketches.
 Discuss the constructional features of a storage battery with a neat sketch.
 Explain the working of a charging circuit with a neat sketch.
 Explain the constructional differences and working of DC generator and an alternator. Also
discuss the relative merits of them in automobile applications

UNIT-III:

 Define camber, castor, king pin rake angle, toe-in, toe-out and discuss their significance in
steering system.
 Explain clearly how the King-Pin inclination produces directional stability and why do the
front wheels have to toe-out in turns.
 Discuss the significance of center point steering with suitable sketches.
 Explain briefly with neat sketches various steering linkage used in steering systems.
 State the functions of steering gears. Discuss different types steering gears used in automobiles

UNIT-VI:
 List out the emissions from automobiles and discuss their effects on the living organisms.
 Explain in detail about the engine emissions control by two way and three way catalytic
converter.
 Explain working of the exhaust gas recirculation device for the control of NOx emissions.
 Discuss the national and international emission standards.
 Discuss the need of alternative fuels for emission control. Discuss the various Energy
alternatives for running automobiles.
 Summarize the advantages and disadvantages of use of LPG and CNG fuels in automobiles.
 List the advantages and disadvantages of use of alternate fuels in automobiles.
 List advantages and disadvantages, hydrogen fuel is used as an alternative fuel in automobiles.
