JOURNAL REFLECTION

I have now slowly started o experience tiring aspect of being a

teacher. Teaching is no doubt a very rewarding experience, seeing
children grow and nurture every day is priceless. However, the
planning and teaching cycle can be ready for a morning mat chat.
Every Monday morning, the toddler teacher provides children with
an opportunity to share events that might have took place over the
weekend. Children are then introduced to the new activities/ tables
that have been arranged for them and ownership rules were
brainstormed and discussed as a positive reinforcer. A child also
shared his new achievement of being able to put socks and shoes on
by himself. Teacher, other educators and me we all praised him by
clapping and acknowledging him for his effort towards starting to
take such responsibilities.

The day was going well until I started to administer risky and
concerning behaviours such as child tried to grab neck of another
child, where other children biting and pushing each other. I raised
this issue to the toddler teacher, as she was at her break and also to
the other educator that was present in the yard. The teacher
immediately called all children inside for a mat conference. To raise
these behavioural issues and to find solution as a group so these
events does not occur again. After the children sat on the mat, the
teacher showed her disappointment and told how these behaviours
mentioned above can be life threating and can result into serious
consequences for them. I felt that this strategy has not been
working, as a child has started to take this very lightly. This is well
evident through the recurrence of such behaviours and events over
the past couple of days. This has started to frustrate me as most of
the class challenges the authority.
I believe that it is the time where there should be serious
consequences for such action. There should be a proper behaviour
management plan that needed to be constructed involving other
educators and taking in account of their ideas, perspectives and
strategies. This plan then needed to be strictly followed and
reinforced in the classroom by all educators. For my personal
development goal, I also need to be built in skill such as patience to
cope these challenging situations. To focus more on finding
strategies and ways to promote positive behaviours and knowledge
of appropriately responding to challenging behaviours through
investigation. Therefore, I will now research the possible reasons
behind such behaviours and step by step process of improving them.
