• This is May 2021 edition released by Ernst & Young Global Ltd (EY) and this is released twice in a year since 2003.

• India has improved its rank due to its exceptional performance in the Solar Photo Voltaic (PV) sector. Installed solar
PV capacity in India has skyrocketed to 39 GW during this period and overtook the wind capacity 1st time.

• In 2020, global renewable energy capacity investments grew 2 per cent to USD 303.5 billion, the second-highest
annual figure recorded to date despite the impact of the pandemic.

• During the recent climate summit hosted by the US, India committed to set up 450 GW for Renewable Energy Power
Capacity (installed) by 2030.

• E-Committee, Supreme Court of India has released Manual for its top
citizen-centric service- free “e-Courts Services Mobile app” in 14
languages (English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarathi, Kannada,
Khasi, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu).

• “e-Courts Services Mobile app” already released by e-Committee,


Supreme Court of India for the benefit of the Litigants, Citizens,
Lawyers, Law firms, Police, Government Agencies and other
Institutional Litigants has so far crossed 57 lakh downloads.

Cool' PPE Kits for Corona Warriors
• Nihaal Singh Adarsh from Mumbai invented a Ventilation system for the the Corona Warrior wearing the PPE and
named Cov-Tech.

• It takes the surrounding air, filters it and pushes it into the PPE suit.

• With guidance from Dr. Ulhas Kharul of National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, Nihaal was able to develop the first
model .

• He had created a start-up called Watt Technovations

• Rs. 10,00,000/- grant for prototype development and product innovation, which Nihaal received from NIDHI’s
PRomoting and Accelerating Young and ASpiring technology entrepreneurs (PRAYAS), of the Department of
Science and Technology, Government of India.

• Besides the PRAYAS grant, the startup also received a support of Rs. 5,00,000, from New Venture Investment
Programme, conducted jointly by RIIDL & K J Somaiya Institute of Management.

• The final product that has come into being is being used in Sai Sneh hospital, Pune and Lotus Multi Specialty
hospital, Pune. The company plans to scale up its production in May / June 2021. The product costs Rs. 5,499 per
piece

NIDHI-PRAYAS : Grant Support for Idea to Prototype

• The lack of support for early stage prototyping causes many innovators / startups to lose interest in their
technology ventures.

• To address the gap in the very early stage idea/ proof of concept funding, under the National Initiative
for Developing and Harnessing the Innovations (NIDHI) the National Science & Technology
Entepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), Department of Science & Technology (DST),
Government of India launched the NIDHI-PRAYAS program.

• The NIDHI - PRomoting and Accelerating Young and ASpiring technology entrepreneurs (NIDHI-
PRAYAS), the scheme launched is a pre-incubation initiative, specifically supports young innovators turn
their ideas into proof-of-concepts. This support shall allow the innovators to try their ideas without fear of
failure, allowing them to reach a stage where the innovators / entrepreneurs have a ready product and
are willing to approach incubators for commercialization.

• The maximum grant support extent to Innovator/Incubatee is Rs.10.00 lakhs.

NIDHI (National Initiative for Development and Harnessing Innovations) is an umbrella program initiated by the
Science & Technology department (DST) of the Indian government for cultivating knowledge-based innovations
and ideas driven by technology into fruitful start-ups.

Ministry of Ayush organises series of five webinars on "Be with Yoga, Be at Home"
• The Ministry of Ayush is organising various activities in the run up to the International Day of Yoga, 2021.

• One among these is a series of five webinars that the Ministry is organising under the broad theme of “Be with Yoga, Be at
Home” in collaboration with five renowned organisations of the country who will present one webinar each on a particular
topic of importance in the current scenario.

• The first among the series will be held on Monday, 24 May by The Art of Living on “Finding inner strength amidst outer
crisis.”

• The other four webinars to follow in this series will be presented by The Yoga Institute, Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram,
Arham Dhyan Yog, and Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute.

• The Art of Living is a non-profit, educational and humanitarian organization founded in 1981 by the world-renowned
humanitarian and spiritual teacher Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Established in 1918.

• The Yoga Institute, Santacruz (East), Mumbai was founded in 1918 by Shri Yogendra ji and believes that yoga is a way of
life.

• Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM), established by TKV Desikachar in 1976 as a non-profit Public Charitable Trust, is
among the premier centres of yoga and yoga therapy in India.

• Arham Dhyan Yog imbibes Jain Sraman tradition and was started by muni Pranmay Sagar. KaivalyaDhama is a university
of yoga and is situated in Mumbai.

NTPC Mouda’s river rejuvenation project helps
over 150 villages to overcome water crisis
• NTPC, Central Public Sector Undertaking under Ministry of Power in Mouda, Maharashtra has helped over 150
villages in and around its operational area to overcome water crisis through ground water rejuvenation project.

• As part of its CSR initiative, NTPC Mouda is supporting the Jalyukta Shivar Yojana project which has successfully
managed to turn Mouda into a water-surplus tehsil. This project was carried out by the Maharashtra wing of Art of
Living

• Earlier Mouda, was one of the most water-deficient tehsils in Nagpur.

• In the last four years, over 150 villages have benefited from it.

• The ‘Trap the rain where it falls’ technique involves the creation of ponds and nullahs throughout the stretch of the
river so that rainwater can be held for a long period. Earlier, the rainwater would run off the ground, but now the
water gets sufficient time to percolate deep into the ground. This has led to a massive increase in groundwater
levels.

Over 3 Lakh Women Provided Assistance
through 701 One Stop Centres in 35 States/UTs

• One Stop Centre Scheme (OSCs) being implemented by the Ministry of Women
and Child Development has provided assistance to over 3 lakh women so far.

• The scheme is being implemented across the country since 1st April, 2015
through State Governments/ Union Territory (UT) Administrations to provide
integrated support and assistance to women affected by violence and in distress,
both in private and public spaces, under one roof and facilitate immediate,
emergency and non-emergency access to a range of services including police,
medical, legal aid and counseling, psychological support to fight against any
forms of violence against women.

• Till date, 701 OSCs in 35 States/UTs have been operationalised.

Countrywide “AYUSH COVID -19 Counselling Helpline” operationalized

• A dedicated community support helpline has been operationalised by the Union Ministry of Ayush
to provide AYUSH-based approaches and solutions for the challenges raised by Covid-19. The
toll-free number is 14443.

• The helpline is operational pan-India from 6 am to 12 midnight-all seven days of a week.

• Through the helpline 14443, experts from different streams of Ayush, namely Ayurveda,
Homeopathy, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani & Siddha would be available to address queries of the
general masses.

• These experts would not only be providing counselling and feasible remedies to the patients but
would also guide them about the availability of nearby Ayush facilities.

• In addition, the therapeutic potentials have also been explored and two potential Polyherbal
formulations namely AYUSH-64, an Ayurvedic formulation developed by CCRAS and Kabasura
Kudineer of Siddha system has been found effective in the management of mild to moderate
Covid-19 conditions.

Jackfruits from Tripura exported to London
• In a major step towards harnessing exports potential of agricultural and processed food products
from north-eastern region, a shipment of 1.2 metric tonne of fresh jackfruit was exported from
Tripura to London.

• Jackfruits were sourced from the Tripura based Krishi Sanyoga Agro Producer Company Ltd. The
consignment was packed at APEDA assisted pack-house facility of Salt Range Supply Chain
Solution Ltd and exported by Kiega EXIM Pvt Ltd.

• Recently, the first consignment of ‘red rice’ was sent to the USA from Assam. Iron rich ‘red rice’ is
grown in Brahmaputra valley of Assam, without the use of any chemical fertilizer. The rice variety
is referred as ‘Bao-dhaan’, which is an integral part of the Assamese food.

Apeda organises virtual buyer seller meet for boosting
mango exports to South Korea

• In a bid to increase mangoes exports to South Korea, APEDA in collaboration with


Indian embassy, Seoul and Indian Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ICCK),
organised a Virtual Buyer Seller Meet (VBSM).

• Earlier this month India has shipped a consignment of 2.5 Metric Tonne (MTs) of
Geographical Indication (GI) certified Banganapalli & other
variety Survarnarekha mangoes sourced from farmers in Krishna & Chittor
districts of Andhra Pradesh

INS Rajput Decommissioned
• The Indian Navy’s first destroyer INS Rajput was decommissioned at Naval Dockyard,
Visakhapatnam after serving the nation for 41 glorious years.

• INS Rajput was commissioned on 04 May 1980, at Poti, Georgia (erstwhile USSR), as the lead
ship of the Rajput Class Destroyers of the Indian Navy with Capt (later Vice Admiral) Gulab
Mohanlal Hiranandani as the first Commanding Officer.

• During her service, the ship had the distinction of being part of both the Western and Eastern
Fleets. She was based in Mumbai till Jun 1988 and thereafter was re-based at Visakhapatnam as
part of the Eastern Fleet.

• Apart from participating in various naval operations like Op Pawan, Operation Aman,
Operation Cactus, and various multinational exercises, the ship was a flag bearer of the Indian
Navy's benign role by participating in various relief operations which include cyclone relief
operations off Odisha Coast in 1999, relief operations post Tsunami in Andaman & Nicobar Islands
in 2004 and HADR mission after the earthquake at Jakarta.

DRDO develops COVID-19 antibody detection kit

• Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), a laboratory of


Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has developed an
antibody detection-based kit 'DIPCOVAN', the DIPAS-VDx COVID-19 IgG
Antibody Microwell ELISA for sero-surveillance.

• The DIPCOVAN kit can detect both spike as well as nucleocapsid (S&N) proteins
of SARS-CoV-2 virus with a high sensitivity of 97 per cent and specificity of 99 per
cent.

• The kit has been developed in association with Vanguard Diagnostics Pvt Ltd, a
development and manufacturing diagnostics company based at New Delhi.

NMMS app and Area officer monitoring App

• Union Minister of Rural Development, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Panchayati Raj and Food
Processing Industries, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar launched National Mobile Monitoring Software
(NMMS) app and Area officer monitoring App

• The NMMS App permits taking real time attendance of workers at Mahatma Gandhi NREGS
worksites along with geotagged photograph, which will increase citizen oversight of the
programme besides potentially enabling processing payments faster.

• Area Officer Monitoring App facilitates them to record their findings online along with time stamped
and go-coordinate tagged photograph for all the schemes of Deptt of Rural Development-
Mahatma Gandhi NREGS, PMAYG, PMGSY.

• This would also enable not only better record keeping of inspections by field and supervisory
officials but also facilitate analysis of the findings for better programme implementation.

DST invites applications from startups and companies for developing new
technologies and innovative products to tackle second COVID wave
• As a rapid response to support startup-driven solutions for
tackling the current challenging, second wave of COVID 2.0 in
the country, Indian startups and companies have been invited to
apply for developing new technologies and innovative products
that can enable our country to fight the crisis.

• NIDHI4COVID2.0, a new initiative under which the companies


can apply, will fund eligible startups & companies registered in
India offering promising solutions in the thrust areas of oxygen
innovation, portable solution, relevant medical accessories,
diagnostic, informatics, or any other solution that
addresses/mitigate various challenges faced by country/society
due to the severe impact of COVID-19.

• The initiative is a special drive of the National Science &


Technology Entrepreneurship Development
Board (NSTEDB), Department of Science & Technology (DST),
Government of India (GoI) for supporting indigenous solutions
and innovative products to combat the crisis that the country is
currently facing due to the pandemic.

Khelo India State Centre of Excellence in Srinagar
to add training facilities in Kayaking and Canoeing

• Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has decided to include the two water sports
disciplines Kayaking and Canoeing at the Khelo India State Center of Excellence
(KISCE) in Srinagar.

• The J&K Sports Council and the state government had initiated the request for
these sporting disciplines to be added.

• The KISCE, which was launched in April 2021, after revamping facilities in the
existing J&K Water Sports Academy in the state, earlier had training facilities only
for rowing.

Sports Ministry approves Rs 2 Lakh assistance to 2011

• The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) has


approved an amount of Rs 2 Lakh for Karnataka's V
Tejaswini Bai, who won the Arjuna Award in 2011 and was
a member of the Women’s Kabaddi team that won gold
medals at the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games respectively.

• The financial assistance has been approved from the


Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for
the Sportspersons, under the ongoing jointly collaborated
initiative from the Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympic
Association and the MYAS to support ex-international
athletes and coaches amid ongoing Covid-19.

Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away

• Chipko movement pioneer Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away at the All


India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Uttarakhand's Rishikesh.

• He is considered the pioneer of the Chipko movement of the 1970s


which he had launched along with dedicated environment
conservationists Gaura Devi to save forests.

• He also led the protests against the construction of the Tehri dam.

• He also coined the Chipko slogan: 'ecology is permanent economy’.

Chipko movement

• The Chipko movement or Chipko Andolan, was a forest conservation movement


in India. It began in 1973 in Uttarakhand, then a part of Uttar Pradesh (at the
foothills of Himalayas) and went on to become a rallying point for many future
environmental movements all over the world.

• It created a precedent for starting nonviolent protest in India. However, it


was Sunderlal Bahuguna, a Gandhian activist, who gave the movement a proper
direction and its success meant that the world immediately took notice of this
non-violent movement, which was to inspire in time many similar eco-groups by
helping to slow down the rapid deforestation, expose vested interests, increase
social awareness and the need to save trees, increase ecological awareness,
and demonstrate the viability of people power.

Banerjee passed away

• Srikumar Banerjee who led India’s nuclear-institutions at the cusp of


US Nuclear-deal passes away

• A reputed scientist, he was a leading global expert in the use of


specialised alloys used in nuclear processes

• He joined Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) after a BTech in


metallurgy from IIT, Kharagpur, from where he later earned his PhD as
well.

• He retired as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and


secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy in 2012.
• Banerjee also served as the director of the Bhabha Atomic Research
Centre (BARC) for six years till 2010.

• He was a recipient of many awards in his career, including the Padma


Shri in 2005 and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1989.

Sanskrit scholar Pandit Rewa Prasad Dwivedi passed away
• Sanskrit scholar Pandit Rewa Prasad Dwivedi passed away.

• Rewa Prasad Dwivedi (born 1935 – 2021) was a Sanskrit scholar, poet,
writer, teacher, and critic.

• His original works include poetry as epics and lyrics, plays, and prose.
He wrote new literature under the pseudonym "sanatana", meaning 'the
eternal’

• His most significant works, Sitacaritam and Svatantryasambhavam are


two epic poems. He has written extensively on Sahityasastra (Poetics)
and produced such great works as Kavyalankarakarika,
Natyanusasanam, and Sahityasarirakam.

• In the early 1980s, Dwivedi organized the World Sanskrit Conference at


Banaras Hindu University.

• He was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Award, 1991 for his


Svatantryasambhava, an epic poem.
